EVO 2015 Preview (July 17-19, live from Las Vegas) 3 days, 9 world championships to be decided!

EVO 2015 Preview

No Caption Provided

Welcome to the EVO 2015 preview blog! The biggest fighting game tournament event on the planet continues to get bigger every year, let's check out the line up for this year's event!

9. Ultra Street Fighter IV - Developer: Capcom and Dimps - Released in 2014 - 2nd appearance at EVO - Debut year: 2014 - Running on XBox 360

We say goodbye in an official capacity to BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and The King of Fighters XIII. BlazBlue and KOFXIII in particular are saddening to see go. KOFXIII has had a storied 3 year run at EVO, particularly the South Korea vs. Mexico rivalry during the EVO 2012 KOFXIII top 8. BlazBlue had the most exciting grand final last year and left both the grand finalists and some developers who had made the trip to see their game on the big stage in tears.

$50,000 = A lot of new phones

Thanks to a late $30,000 addition courtesy of Namco the total prize money is now over $300,000 for EVO 2015. This all started back when Capcom announced its partnership with Sony for the 2015 Capcom Pro Tour and the other developers have followed suit, whether its straight up donations from Aksys Games (10k for both XRD & P4UA) and Namco, or money from DLC sales from Ed Boon and the Lang Zone (which won't be the first thing he's dropped money on this month now that he needs a new phone).

Nintendo have yet to join the party unfortunately for the Smash community and Capcom can't officially acknowledge UMvC3 anymore because they don't have the Marvel license. Nintendo of America’s Bill Trinen will be in attendance and competing this year, maybe seeing EVO first hand will convince him to support the scene more.

Kudos to Justin for taking matters into his own hands! I don't know whether people were kidding or actually questioning Justin's integrity on this but he posted another tweet:

You can check out the brackets here and search for specific players here (if a searched player has entered multiple games it'll show them all).

In a move that has surprised many, the final 3 games are unchanged from last year. Marvel has retained not only a spot on Sunday, but its 2nd to last spot from the past few years. XRD takes the annual early morning anime spot while MKX, which closed out Combo Breaker 2 months ago and was 2nd to last at CEO last month, has to settle for 2nd out (replacing Killer Instinct). One of the men in charge of EVO, Joey Cuellar, said:

Mad Catz|Daigo Umehara is still the only player to win 2 SFIV tournaments at EVO, winning in 2009 & 2010
Mad Catz|Daigo Umehara is still the only player to win 2 SFIV tournaments at EVO, winning in 2009 & 2010

Which in this fighting game fan's opinion is a strange mindset to have considering Marvel's waning popularity in fighting game tournament streams for the past 12 months. That said EVO 2014 UMvC3 still holds the record for highest concurrent stream viewer-ship and its top 8 very exciting to watch!

One important fact that may get lost in the shuffle with all the talk about which games should get their finals where, is that this will likely be the final official USFIV tournament at EVO, with Street Fighter V launching in March 2016. If it is then I salute you Street Fighter IV, it's been a good 7 years at the top.

For an insight into the MKX scene at the moment and perceived "overpatching," hit the news section below.

CEO 2015 highlights

Last month was Community Effort Orlando, and once again CEO surpassed its previous event, check out some highlights including the Stone Cold Kenneth Bradley entrance which was covered by ESPN, Buzzfeed, SB Nation, Vice and a whole lot more!

Incoming Comic-Con 2015 announcements

An event that needs no introduction, SDCC is a place where Capcom and Namco love to cater to the casual audiences of Street Fighter and Tekken, including the reveal of Street Fighter X Tekken in 2010, which at the time seemed like the greatest fighting game ever, and indeed might have been had there not been critical errors in the final product.

SDCC runs from July 9-12, expect SFV and Tekken 7 related announcements. And expect this news item to be updated.

Predator available for MKX tomorrow (Tuesday July 7th)

Kombat pack owners can use Predator starting tomorrow and can be bought next Tuesday. ITs variations are Hunter, Warrior and Hish-Qu-Ten. The first two make sense, a trap variation and a close quarters, possibly rush down variation. Hish-Qu-Ten is apparently a name related to the Predator species in general.

Seeing the Predator take on Jason will likely get the casual MKX player on board once again.

Yatagarasu available tomorrow (Tuesday July 7th)

Yatagarasu Attack on Cataclysm is an indiegogo funded fighting game by former SNK / King of Fighters developers, the campaign ended on August 11, 2013 after receiving $118,243 with an initial asking amount of $68,000. It goes on sale tomorrow!

Steam Link

Fighting Game Community members are not pleased with the constant MKX patches

Before the internet there was no such thing as patches, and a common problem was you'd be stuck with overpowered characters for a game's lifetime (see UMvC3 now that Capcom can't touch it), but now a new problem is emerging. NetherRealm Studio's released a patch that changed characters, making some combos no longer possible, days before CEO 2015 and another one last week nerfing the seemingly overpowered Tanya.

According to members of the FGC, this frequent patching from NRS is not only taking away a tradition of fighting games, adaptation, but it's also hampering players at the most crucial point of the fighting game tournament calendar. In this post by EVO 2011 MvC3 world champion, Jay Snyder AKA Viscant, Viscant gives a detailed breakdown of why NRS need to take a step back and let the players play the game as is for a while.

Games that get patched don't always send you back to square one but some of NRS's patches have shown a curious knack for doing just that. At CEO I watched a bunch of dropped combos with Scorpion. His best 1 bar combo was changed, a lot of people--some who got relatively deep into the tournament--were doing the wrong combos fairly often. I saw a metric crapton of Hellfire Scorpion's running face first into armor. I can't fault the players, they had about 48 hours warning, some of them may have already got on the plane before realizing their character was gimped. This is not nearly enough time to make fundamental strategic changes or to get enough casuals to override your muscle memory.

Later into the post...

And what if it wasn't even necessary? What if we would have eventually solved Tanya Kombat X? It seems like Tempest Kung Lao beats her and Grandmaster Sub seems to do somewhat decently. What if there are 5-6 others who fight her well? She wouldn't even need to be nerfed. The competitive balance would advance, players would learn. But it's all hypothetical now. It seems that actually exploring these matchups and conquering roadblocks just isn't a part of the MKX meta.

It should make for interesting viewing at EVO to see who, if any, character stand out as stronger than others, and if the constant changes lead to any critical dropped combos next weekend.

Thank you for reading and happy watching!

This is the most packed EVO yet, certainly the highest paying EVO yet, hope you'll give it a watch! And if you're tuning in for the first time and are wondering what to expect, it might go something like this:

Anyone else exhausted despite just sitting down and watching a stream the last few hours? Jesus.

Haha! I'm right there with you. Exhausted, but still hyped up oddly enough. I can't tell if I want to go to sleep, play SF, or just youtube some matches.

Great EVO this year. I've always been one of those people who skip most of the other events and just watch EVO but I might start following them more going forward.

@starvinggamer: I feel like if I commit hard I'll be more likely to put the work in to get good at the game.

@i_stay_puft: That's what I did two years ago, though things can get dry from time to time, don't feel bad about stepping away for a few months then returning.

1:00AM finisher for me.

Wow what a top 8. I really wanted Infiltration to win it all, but was rooting for Gamerbee in the grand finals.

What a craptastic way for it to wrap up. I SWEAR the rules were if your stick does shit like that then you win the entire game, not just the round... Are EVO rules written anywhere in regards to stick malfunctions/pauses? Bee is a better guy than me. I would have been calling for a game win. Sorry bra... shoulda bought MadCatz you done goofed!

Easily the best EVO since Evo Moment #37 back in the day.

Those James and S.Kill feels at the end. ; ;

I have to go next year for SF5. If the money is there, then I am all over it!

That was the greatest top 8 in SF4 history. A fitting end for it's top dog presence. Twitter has been blowing up with Gamerbee discussion, and I have to agree, that after such a vicious road to Grand Finals, it was heartbreaking to see him lose it. I don't think that this means we should forget about Momochi. He played clean and solid the whole way through and earned his victory.

Unfortunately, that pause will be a blemish on that set forever. Something to wonder how things might have been different if it hadn't happened. I feel like the pause was handled well. No huge meter changes and a forfeit of the round. Whether by stick malfunction or button press, it really begs the question if Capcom will use the hold-to-pause feature that SkullGirls has so brilliantly implemented in Street Fighter V.

Overall, seeing America demolished, Juri's feet represented in top 8, favorites stopped (@hassun Sorry about Tokido), and tiring finals was amazing. That Losers Finals alone was one of the greatest sets I've ever seen. One that I think people will analyze and rewatch for years to come.

I may have wanted Infiltration to win, but he entertained everyone in the end and is already qualified for Capcom Cup.

I also may have started crying when Seth finally sniffled the moment before the stream went down. While the pieces of shit remain pieces of shit for stealing at these events, the real community is unlike any other and quite frankly I'm lucky to be part of it. These events are the best gatherings around video games you could ever ask for that simply can't be topped by DotA or LoL. I cannot wait for EVO 2016 when Daigo will take it with his fundamentals based Ryu. Go ahead, tell me I'm wrong about that prediction!

@dan_citi: I feel sorry for Ai Ai but at least he returned to form for a short time in the Nemo match. I hope he comes out to more international tournaments now. Maybe with an r/Kappa sponsorship.

@zlatko:

j. If a player accidentally or intentionally stops his game for any other reason, he will be forced to forfeit the round. Examples include accidentally pressing the start button on his controller to pause the match, unplugging his or his opponents joystick, etc. If the game cannot be restarted from the exact point of interruption, the player is forced to forfeit the Game.

k. Match interruptions beyond the players control (e.g. the game crashes or freezes) will be dealt with directly by the Tournament Organizer. All best attempts will be made to resume the round from where it left off. If that cannot be accomplished, the Game will be replayed with both players picking the same characters and modes.

The rules were followed perfectly.

@viciousbearmauling: The disappointment is slightly lessened by the fact that Momochi won with Tokido's stick.

I think the first year of SFV will be the best chance the USA has gotten yet to win a main SF EVO. Because of the lack of Japanese arcade release (SFV not getting an arcade release puts massive question marks on its adoption by the Japanese FGC and really has me worried.) and because of people like Justin Wong who are amazing at picking up a game quickly. He did in SFIV and won pretty much everything at the EVO exhibition as well, even soundly beating Combofiend.

Finally, I would like to remind everyone that the GB chat is back up and the salty suites are being streamed.

Okay good.

However, one part of the rules seems... off. "If the game cannot be restarted from the exact point of interruption, the player is forced to forfeit the game." They didn't start right from that round. The time had to tick away, Gbee got two hits, the game was paused towards the end again, then a new stick was found, and then the third and last round was started.

The rules don't state how the forfeit of the round is to take place either. Do we just add an invisible "okay Gamer is up one round even though it says Momochi is up 1-0 right now" and then continue from this point onward as if this is the 1-1 point?

The whole thing is meh to me. 100% anti hype.

@zlatko: Different section:

Reporting Equipment Failure: Video game hardware has a tendency to break down during tournaments. Buttons or joysticks will occasionally break down in the middle of a match, leaving the player on the broken side at a significant disadvantage. The following rules will be used in the event of a breakdown.

a. In the event of an equipment failure, they player has the option to stop the Game in progress to obtain an replacement.

b. If a Game is stopped in progress, the reporting player must forfeit the current round.

c. New equipment must be immediately available. If replacement equipment cannot be obtained in a timely manner, the player must continue to play on their current equipment or forfeit the Match.

d. Once replacement equipment is obtained, the player is given the rest of the round to configure their buttons and test the new equipment. If the player gains an undue advantage by doing so (e.g. charging an abundance of super meter), they must forfeit the Game.

e. A player may opt to switch out equipment between Games at no penalty. When this occurs, the player will be given ample time to configure his buttons before the next Game begins.

Applying this to that situation: Momochi's stick malfunctioned during the match. He reported it, thereby forfeiting the round. It wasn't an accidental nor an intentional pause, it was equipment failure.

Anyway, we're not supposed to get another Premier any time soon, right? I need some time to recover.

@zlatko: So Momochi was 1 round up in the final game. During the second round his stick failed. The match was halted and in accordance to the rules Gamerbee won round 2. They let the time run out because that way there is as little as possible extra metre gain. Making them both start in round 3 with pretty much the same amount of metre. I don't think there is a more elegant and honest way to do it really.

P.S. Is that a Seth Killian avatar? Looks nice.

If they run both USF4 and SFV next year, will Evo be 4 days long? Can't imagine them running 4 huge tournaments (SF4, SF5, Melee, Smash U) in 3 days. Especially with the overlap between USF4 and SFV

@hassun: I think you meant to say everything right about both those things. Damn shame this won't be in western versions though.

@dan_citi: More Sabretooth IMO. And the game already has "Birdie!" o_O

Can't wait for the beeeeeeta!

You duders need to come to Evo next year so I'm not sitting there being introverted by myself. Was still a fucking amazing experience.

Looks nice.

That and the above blurb about stick malfunction does make sense. It was handled like it should have been.

Yes it is S.Kill! It came from that amazing art that was floating around pre-EVO of all the heavy hitters and commentators in this art style. So dope.

This was the first EVO I've followed, having only recently gotten super into fighting tournaments in the last year (really only in the last three or four months--I started my semi-regular series on my fumbling attempts to learn fighting games back in May (which I need to start updating again, particularly after this weekend), and what a great fucking year to get started. Saturday night I couldn't conceive of any finals being as batshit insane as the Killer Instinct finals were, but then the GGXrd finals happened and were crazy, and the MKX finals weren't quite as crazy because everyone knew Sonicfox had that shit locked up in spite of his loss earlier but were still pretty fucking crazy, and then basically every match of the USFIV top eight had me on the edge of my seat (to say nothing of the MvC3 finals, which were exciting in their own right). This is without mentioning all the other side-tournaments going on (I see you Melty Blood) and oh yeah the P4AU tourney, good lord.

To say nothing of the fact that I dove deep into the various fighters I owned during downtime (read: any time Smash was on the main stage, or in between bouts--the nice thing about Melty Blood is that it runs real good in a window so I just had it up in between fights). I generally pack up my stick every night, but this weekend I just left it out on my desk, because I didn't want to have to stop watching long enough to open it up and take it out (a process that takes like two seconds, if we're being honest). I think at one point I had like five or six streams going, switching back and forth between them all. What a great fucking weekend this was. Doubtless this whole week is going to involve me dicking around in fighting games (I just picked up GGXrd last night and am eager to see how Milla and her hat play tonight, and I have continued my undefeated streak with Chie in online play (granted, I've only played two matches, but shut up and let me have this) and will probably be diving into that some more). Plus, of course, it was fun as hell to hang out with all you dudes in the chat as it all happened. What a fantastic way to spend a weekend.

So, when's the next big tournament?

@hmoney001: Provided they remember how to count rounds, of course.

Man was that fun to watch. I'm not very good at fighting games, but was totally captivated by the action yesterday. I could not pull myself away last night or really all day. The intensity and the drama of the Street Fighter grand finals was terrific. I was pulling for Gamerbee as he clawed his way to the finals and then took it all the way to the last possible round. I felt badly for Momochi when his stick broke. At the time, I didn't know if he was done or if it would continue. That was definitely worth staying up late to watch (on the east coast) even if I am dragging at work today.

Articles are starting to go up about rising thunder

So they're making the fighting game I would make if I made a fighting game. Interesting and exciting. Props to Seth and the Cannons.

I barely have time for games I bought and paid for so I'd feel bad to sign up for an alpha and potentially take up a slot that could go to someone with more time, so I haven't signed up yet. I am pumped to see someone build a FG like I have wanted to see in the world to know if it will actually work or not.

BTW anyone else surprised to see no GB coverage (at least yet)? Considering Seth is a regular on the E3 panels every year so he knows the crew and they showed a LOT of other people the game.

Goddamnit, EVO, I can't hold all these feels. ;^;

Gamerbee looking absolutely soulcrushed, his fiancee coming over in tears, that was emotional in and of itself, but when James Chen started crying on camera, I damn near lost it. What a fuckin' tournament. You could write an entire novel on the SF4 Top 8 alone. Just some bonkers stuff.

Highlights from me:
Nobi's Dragunov play through all of Tekken 7's Top 8
The Sleep comeback against MyGod in KI Top 8
Domi's DIRTY Cinder bomb loop in KI Top 8
Rico Suave finally making it to the top of the KI mountain
The entire Xrd Top 4
[A]rmada returning to the Melee throne
KBR winning Mahvel
Every last fucking second of the SF4 Top 8

I would say that I'm looking forward to next year, but with a bar this high, I don't know if I'll be able to handle next year. XD

Also, are we talking about Necalli here, or is there a different thread for that?

@stormtphoenix: That's a good set of highlights! Alex put the Necalli trailer on the site if you want to chat it up there.

Speaking of which, shout-out to @alex and @austin_walker for checking EVO out this year!

I'm glad both of them checked it out, now an actual conversation can be had on the beast cast instead of one person sharing their experience :D
