Mod Edit - Since we've got a new one of these pretty often, we've decided to just designate this as the thread to talk about all things fighting game related, such as FGC, what color of gi Ryu's wearing this week, et cetera. Have at it. Good luck, have Zangief.

Geoff Keighley's The Game Awards announce 2015 Best Fighting Game nominees

One isn't a traditional fighting game and the other isn't out of alpha stages but at least they're still being recognised. No doubt the category will return next year for the obligatory awarding of a new Street Fighter game. Other categories can be found here. The Game Awards 2015 airs on Thursday December 3rd.

Fight Sticks

Thanks for reading and happy watching!

On the subject of Fight Sticks I bought my first stick 2 weeks ago along with USFIV for my PS4, with the intention of becoming competent with Ryu before SFV's release, since Sagat isn't in the game at least until 2017 if at all. I bought a Venom Arcade Stick and have no complaints about it, the Amazon reviewers described it as a good place to start for people new to fighting games / sticks and easy to mod for those that aren't one or both.

Here's some strange Street Fighter related videos to finish off this blog (poor timing on the video's release, turns out Ronda's human after all)!

That sucks. I remember the first Shadowloo Showdown being pretty hype, but I haven't caught it in recent years. I don't know what the FGC in Australia is like but hopefully they get another CPT event soon.

So as requested in another topic. I had a few rounds on Killer Instinct today against some friends. I was pretty poor, but I did manage to win a match. I was using Jago versus one of the season 2 characters (whichever one that is 80% off today, the ghost/ghoul looking character in season 2). Due to my friend playing more with fast paced/jump attack characters, he was unable to fathom how to use the new character so I managed to get a few throw downs (the thing when you pick up the other character and chuck them forwards or backwards) and a few counter attacks/fireballs. The other matches did not go so well, but I did manage to start trying to put into play the jump attack = stand to block, standing attack = low block and trying to not rush in. Some lessons were learnt and I hope to keep playing the game. Good times.

I look forward to seeing what Street Fighter V can do and whether getting in early on that would actually be helpful for a rookie like myself.

@johnlocke: Fighting games can be very different from one another but there are some general basics like spacing and timing which will help you no matter which game you're playing.

Judging by what you posted I'm going to say you should at least get to know the characters in the game so you have a general idea who each character is and what they can do. Nothing specific yet, just get a general idea.

Which game are you talking about?

But yeah some great advise in the other thread. Are there any tournaments where KI shows up or is Street Fighter and Marvel versus Capcom the ones that tend to be most played?

@johnlocke: Any game you are playing! (KI in this case.)

KI is played at tournaments but is usually not one of the main games due to its limited release. It might get a boost once the PC version comes out.

The current kings of the competitive scene are (more or less in this order) USFIV, Smash Melee, Smash 4, MKX, Xrd and UMVC3. USFIV will most likely be replaced by SFV when that comes out.

@johnlocke: The next big tournament is Kumite in Tennessee (KIT for short). @flstyle or @hassun will probably post in this thread with the details when it gets closer. KI might wrap up on Saturday but it should get streamed by someone. You'll just have to check the schedule. In the meantime I would recommend following Maximilian_DOOD and OMGWTFZombieBBQ (groan) on twitch as they stream KI pretty regularly.

@johnlocke: @hippie_genocide: KiT is a while off. This weekend we have the aforementioned STARTING OVER tournaments I might post something about KOF GCC Dubai which is on Christmas. We'll see.

Other than that it's going to be pretty quiet until KiT. We might get the GB chat for Games Done Quick but that's not really FGC-related of course.

@johnlocke: There are various locations (trade shows etc.) with the current or belated beta form of the game all around the world, I'm assuming they just collected several of the present build and set them up for a tourney, for a 64 man tourney they would only need 2 setups but they'll probably use 4-6.

Well this is a surprise. There is actually another USFIV tournament happening this weekend.

Loading Video...

What?

  • We've talked about Kakutop League before. It's more or less Europe's equivalent of the Topanga League (although it uses invites and not qualifying tournaments to determine who enters).
  • This event will be a bit different though. It's a France vs UK 8v8 tournament to determine which country is the strongest in Europe.
  • The teams are:
        • France: Louffy, Valmaster, Will2pac, Damascus, Perplex, Abdess, Solidjin and Akainu
        • UK: Ryan Hart, ProblemX, ProFluke, Afii, RMZ, Hurricane, Packz and ISDD

When?

Where?

  • France

Stream:

@hassun: Oh man I remember watching it last year, was pretty sick. I don't speak a word of French, but I do recommend checking out the FR stream for Ken Bogard's crazy hype as a commentator: it transcends the language barrier.

Also if what I heard, that the beta goes live Fri. at noon PST, then the gods of Capcom have a grudge against me as that is right when I go to work after 2 days off, followed by an all-day family event, followed by an early work day :/

@hassun: True, but the PC version of UNIEL isn't going to be out till next summer, and as far as we know it won't be the version that will be on console by that point. Which is a real pity, because from what I've heard the newest version of under night is waaaayyy more balanced than current console under night.

Does extra compatibility hurt them though? The game's already coming to Steam and people are more likely to want to play on a TV. Why not support SteamOS?

Speaking of tournaments, the biggest SFIII tournament in history will take place on January 10 2016.

Cooperation Cup vol.14 is a 5v5 team tournament and will feature pretty much all of the greatest SFIII players of all time (except for Kuroda).

89 Teams so that means a staggering 445 players!

The tournament will be streamed on twitch (http://www.twitch.tv/gamenewton) and should start at about 10:00 local (Japan) time.

There is also a pre-Cooperation Cup tournament happening on the 9th.

Teams, characters and more info can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Tz-VdyCNlTfVxJPLOmbYkVgqkj1IAnwMAd4KidRXSW8/edit
