Fighting Game Talk

Mod Edit - Since we've got a new one of these pretty often, we've decided to just designate this as the thread to talk about all things fighting game related, such as FGC, what color of gi Ryu's wearing this week, et cetera. Have at it. Good luck, have Zangief.

It's time for the most biggest prize in fighting game history to be awarded, one of 32 fighting game players will walk away with $125,000, bought to you live from Sony's 2015 PlayStation Experience in Giant Bomb's home turf of San Francisco!

1st: $125,000

2nd: $60,000

3rd: $25,000

4th: $15,000

5th/6th: $10,000 (each)

7th/8th: $5,000 (each)

All of this year's Street Fighter action during the Capcom Pro Tour has been leading up to this point, when 32 qualified players descend to fight in the biggest tournament of its kind (EVO being the biggest open-invitational tournament event respectively), to cap off what has been a big year for fighting games.

Here is the official bracket!

UltraDavid and James Chen's World Warriors of Capcom Cup video series on the official Capcom Fighters channel has been taking a look at the competitors we can expect to see (the introductory video James Chen mentions can also be found below), a full list can be found here.

Geoff Keighley's The Game Awards announce 2015 Best Fighting Game nominees

One isn't a traditional fighting game and the other isn't out of alpha stages but at least they're still being recognised. Fight Sticks

Thanks for reading and happy watching!

On the subject of Fight Sticks I bought my first stick 2 weeks ago along with USFIV for my PS4, with the intention of becoming competent with Ryu before SFV's release, since Sagat isn't in the game at least until 2017 if at all. I bought a Venom Arcade Stick and have no complaints about it, the Amazon reviewers described it as a good place to start for people new to fighting games / sticks and easy to mod for those that aren't one or both.

Here's some strange Street Fighter related videos to finish off this blog (poor timing on the video's release, turns out Ronda's human after all)!

@hassun: You know my thoughts on the chat thing already (basically boiled down to wait until the first major SFV tournament); although I feel like my perspective isn't representative of most people here.

In terms of the thread updates, would there be a way to email people the updates? That way people could get the information and it wouldn't need to be buried in a long post. And you could keep the current structure of the thread and people could just refer to the email in conversation. Not sure if that is feasible but that is one thought I had.

Also what are your thoughts on dedicated threads like a SFV community thread or a Tekken thread for example? I don't want to split up the community or anything like that but it could be good to have more focused discussions for a specific game in a thread (this thread will probably be all SFV talk in February anyway though so maybe this isn't necessary).

On a related note is there a GB Fighting Game community on ps4? Should there be one? I think it could be a good way for people to set up matches with each other at least. Sorry for going off on a tangent but that thought just came to mind and I'm curious about what people think.

In keeping with FGC traditions, what's the most inefficient and convoluted way to keep the threads up to date. Lets go with that method.

Real talk though, I'm good with options 1 or 3. I'm use to going to the first page for updates on other forums.

@technician: I've been trying to find a GB community on the PS4 but how sony has the community stuff is super backwards.

@technician: It'd be rad if there was a steam group or IRC chat or something for it; I pretty much exclusively play fighting games on PC at this point for the most part.

@hassun I think a Frosty Faustings chat would be cool, it's the only NA tournament focused on GG. Had different vibes when I watched the stream last year, and the Skullgirls tournament made me actually kind of interested in that game for the first time ever.

@technician:I was under the impression everyone was moving away from e-mails.

I also don't think our FGC community is big enough to support separate threads for different games.

@belegorm: Remember that Frosty Faustings takes place on Friday and Saturday so we would only be able to do Saturday and a bit of Friday if we're lucky.

@hassun said:

I still haven't heard much from you fine guys and gals about what you want as the next GB FGC chat experience.

And while I'm on the subject, I have some ideas on what to do with the FGC general thread and I wouldn't mind some input.

  1. We could relaunch it as a poll thread which would automatically put the first post at the top of each page, allowing for easier viewing of whatever is going on. This first post would then be continuously updated to suit the needs of the community. The downside of this is that only 1 person can edit that post.
  2. We could make a regular thread with the first few posts reserved (most likely by FLStyle and myself) which can then be continuously updated. The downside of this is that you have to go to page 1 to get the latest updates.
  3. We could just keep the current thread forever. This takes the least amount of immediate effort but also has the downside of both option 1 and option 2.
  4. [Your idea here.]

Any other votes/ideas?

hrmmmm

Option 1, the idea of relaunching as a poll thread is interesting, but then we have to live with whatever poll goes up FOREVER don't we? Harsh. Thinking of user friendliness, this is the easiest for non-FGC people to understand/jump in on.

Option number 2 doesn't sound that bad to me. Maybe the FGC community could make a new, shared account to make those posts with? vs trying to "reserve" posts and then my tiny brain getting lost with whether I should look at post 1 or post 2? :S bad idea or very bad idea?

Sorry I realize there isn't much decision making here.

If you put a gun to my head I'd say... hrmmmrm... Option 2 is the best. We need at least two people who can update a Master Thread for us. 1 ain't gonna cut it!

@hassun: As far as streams go, I'd say ESL for sure, maybe Frosty beforehand just cuz but it doesn't really matter.

As far as threads go, I'd rather just use a regular thread than do a poll workaround. Anyone who doesn't know what they're coming to will default to the first post anyways, whereas making it a poll might just end up confusing people. The only question is who do we want to be in charge of the thread because it's gonna live and die by that person. My vote would be for you since you've done various event type-ups and seem to be generally more active than @flstyle. Reserving posts seems unnecessary because really what matters is the thread title and only the OP can change that, unless we're thinking of roping the mods in.

In the long term, I dislike seeing an outdated poll the but I could live with it. Option 2 sounds good too.

For streams, definitely MKX ESL and maybe a bit of Frostys on Saturday.

@starvinggamer: Sadly my work situation is very... volatile at the moment so I cannot fully guarantee my continued high levels of activity.

As for the structure of the thread, I'm trying to get away from posting all these event infos and links which I think barely anyone ever reads as soon as it drops back a page or two. The poll thread system might be a good way to never have to look for that stuff.

So that's another vote for FF and MKX finals, I guess we can try to go for the combo.

@hassun: As far as thread stuff goes, I'll say that we pretty much use Option 2 over in The Wrestling Thread and it's worked out pretty well for the three years or whatever that thread's been up. As @starvinggamer said, the only thing that really matters is keeping the thread title updated for any upcoming events and putting up whatever big news in the OP.

Beyond that, as long as the thread isn't dead or buried, the people who would be interested in whatever updates will likely see it regardless.

Option 2 seems best, but the idea of a GB FGC Illuminati account seems like it could make it work well. Also the new thread better be called "MCZ TOSTINOS| GB FGC FGT"

I think having to contain everything to one thread is always a fucking awful idea. You either ensure that up-to-date information is buried within a sea of other posts or you force a single person to do all the work on the behalf of a community, which is absurdly unfair unless that person is a saint. I guess the shared account and poll topic is the only option I don't hate.

@zella: Holy Totino's!

@yummytreesap:I think the idea is that we're no better than those anime/baseball/basketball/football/wrestling people, an obvious falsehood (actually I don't care at all; at least most of our posters still exist!). The FGC is the real fount of anime/e-sports/fake sports/fake e-sports after all.

Note: I would like a movie thread (though I never paid attention to the VGK one) and I actually like real sports. Megathreads are a good way to turn off new posters, but having a host of smaller still-big threads rife with in-jokes and references that no normal person will get isn't that much better.

I've thought about a shared account but I'm not sure if it's all that practical in reality (and I'm also not sure if it's even allowed by GB).

@yummytreesap: Well it's going to be 1 thread, that's how the mods have ordained it. Now we just have to figure out the best way to do it.

I guess if I have any time I'll be watching pandaxgaming2 on Saturday. I wonder if Pokchop plays Josie Rizal...

People still play Injustice huh? Wow.

I also noticed Soul Calibur V on there, is that actually a tournament or just casuals? Hard to tell from the graphic.

I got my Hori Fighting Commander in today, time to get into the TTT2 lab with that with the Bombcast as my soundtrack.

huh, I'm actually more excited for KiT than I realized. Looking forward to Tekken 7 (strangely very into 7) and MKX but also cool I'll get to watch some MvC2 and Soul Calibur V (has this game been at many tournaments recently?). It's too bad Tekken Tag 2 is a thing. The first one is way more my jam. Suppose I'm alone on that one though.

Sunday eve seems pretty packed though. How well buffered is KiT usually? Just glancing it seems damn unlikely that wraps up by 9. Not that that matters. My bed time is pretty late.

@technician said:

This is completely a guess but with it having a slot from 6pm to Midnight I would hope it's a tournament..

@fredchuckdave: Yeah you're right; I'm just being a hater haha. I was so disappointed when that game came out instead of a new MK game, after MK9 was such a great comeback for the series. I didn't like the mechanics they added to the MK system like the interactables and the clash/wager mechanic. I also wasn't very interested in the premise or most of the characters, but I'm not a big DC Comics fan. From a competitive standpoint it seemed like the community died out pretty quickly, so it is a bit surprising to see it in a tournament in 2016.

@geraltitude: Yeah it is a tournament, I didn't check out the second image when I made my post, it says it is a tournament in that one.

I remember watching SCV at one EVO where it was off to the side (I think 2013) and the grand finals were between a great Yoshi player and a Viola player and I remember thinking that matchup was pretty exciting. That was the last competitive SCV match I watched though.

@hassun: I'll show up for FF when I'm not working. I kind of don't care about MKX so I won't be in for that.

Also MKX finals being last for KiT instead of USF4 is interesting; considering how that game has really fallen off outside the usual NRS community I expect SFV to be the final game at tournaments after that comes out.

Edit: Oh yeah my hitbox shipped, taking a break from fighting games till it comes in.

Edit #2: Oh snap, apparently an impromptu 4th beta may be happening; I'm not entirely surprised as there were a number of UI bugs (not to mention the obnoxious 2P glitch) in the last beta.

I guess that's good for the people who still play the game. Too bad all the potential converts fell off half a year ago and SFV is just around the corner. "Peace out" indeed.

So I'm just going to reiterate that I think we should just do a regular thread instead of a poll thing, and I nominate @hassun to be in charge of it unless he's concerned about the work thing in which case I volunteer myself since my work thing is being a dad and I don't see that changing in the near future.
