Presenting the line-up for EVO 2013 - INJUSTICE is in! 9 games! Hype!

Update 3

On Wakeup SRK E133 last night (May 8th) EVO director Joey Cueller (MrWizard) announced that due to Injustice blowing up in the FGC, they're going to do an official Injustice tournament. This means there's 9 games at EVO 2013, which hasn't happened since EVO 2004.

Update 2

The Breast Cancer Charity Drive has ended, Super Smash Bros. Melee is going to EVO!

1st - Super Smash Bros. Melee$94605

2nd - Skullgirls- $78760

3rd - Super Street Fighter II Super Turbo- $39567

List of nominees

Over $200,000 in donations has been reached, a great day for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

-----------------------------------

Update - The line-up is official!

8 Games? That's crazy.

What is the Players' Choice?

Mentioned below is a Facebook poll held on the EVO page to see which game you wanted to see at EVO 2013. Every game that got over 500 votes is now eligible. If you want to see your game at EVO, you must donate to Breast Cancer Charity!

The USA Road to EVO season

There will be 4 Road to EVO events with Seeding Points available this year, a much smaller amount than last year. Top 16 at each of these 4 events will get seeding points.

SoCal Regionals

NorCal Regionals

Ultimate Fighting Game Tournament 9

CEO 2013

and more unannounced international events!

More info - http://shoryuken.com/2013/01/08/evo-2013-details-game-lineup-get-your-game-to-evo-and-road-to-evo-events/

-----------------------------------

The Road to EVO season is about the begin! Many events will hold seeding point tournaments between now and July leading up to EVO 2013 (July 12-14 at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas). This evening we'll find out which 4 to 8 games will be given the main stage spots.

Where?

EVO 2012 Line-up

Potential EVO 2013 Games

My Predictions

The only two guaranteed to return are of course SSFIV and UMvC3. My guess is that they'll also replace Soulcalibur V with Tekken Tag 2, making its EVO debut.

After that? it's anyone's guess. Each game with the exception of the yet-to-be-released Injustice has something going for it, whether that's an existing fan-base, large community support or large developer/publisher support. Street Fighter X Tekken has a lot of negativity after its poor high-level showing last year, Capcom hopes to fix that with the Version. 2013 release. You may be wondering why the 2001 GameCube release Super Smash Bros. Melee has been included. The reason is that on the EVO Facebook page, a poll was created for users to vote for which game they would want to see at EVO 2013. The winner by some margin was Melee, the favoured game of the Super Smash Bros. franchise. Even PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, heavily influenced by the Smash Bros. series, has a shot with Sony's support.

NetherRealm Studios is in a strange place at the moment. With MK's competitive popularity fading and Injustice not out until April, it may be another year before you see a NRS game on the big stage. Unless Warner Bros. really puts in the effort to support Mortal Kombat for its 3rd (and presumably final) Championship.

Dead or Alive 5 may be the most played fighting game by casual fighting game fans this year, and has the support of IGN's IGN Pro League, but is that enough to ensure two 3D main stage games this year? Probably not.

The games I'm pretty sure won't be a main stage game this year are Skullgirls, Guilty Gear and Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown. Skullgirls, through various problems, some the fault of its developer, some not, was unfortunately the disappointment of last year. Guilty Gear and Virtua Fighter I believe will find themselves out in the cold in favour of their more popular 3D and anime counterparts, TTT2 and P4A.

The King of Fighters XIII had the 3rd largest entrants last year behind Street Fighter and Ultimate Marvel 3, and 95,000 viewers (on the English speaking Twitch.tv stream alone) tuned in to watch the Grand Final. But it hasn't had much to say for itself since, other than the recent Atlus Fighting Championships. Maybe this is Persona 4 Arena's time, with its fun game, supporting community and the pre-existing Persona fan-base.

Check back or watch the stream to see who the EVO founders have selected this year!

So the players choice looks like it's almost definitely going to be MLP: Fighting is Magic. I'm okay with that, but I hope this means we'll get a reasonably finished build.

Fan outcry + the number of bronies on DA and reddit alone who have already donated. No other game seems to be getting that push. There's a lot of time though.

Again, I don't really mind; the last time I played MLP:FTM, it was pretty good, but still needed a lot of tweeking.

Glad to see I was wrong about Persona though. Here's hoping that P4A is this year's KOF13 in terms of unexpected hype.

Is there any place to check what the donations are for each game or is that not being shown?

Watching the EVO finals in the GB chat last summer was one of my favorite community events. That should definitely happen again, especially now that P4A is in the mix.

I'm excited to see P4A in the lineup, but what I really can't wait to see is more top tier KoF XIII play. That was by far the most exciting thing I saw last year.

Street Fighter IV,Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 were guaranteed for the tournament. Good to see them there, but there would be something seriously wrong with this community of one of those games were not played.

King of Fighters XIII should have been guaranteed, what with the impressive numbers last year, but it is more important internationally than it is in the States. Thankfully it made it in.

Persona 4 Arena was my favourite fighting game to come out last year, so I'm always happy to see it at a competition. It's not pulling fantastic numbers, but what anime game does? And with Chrono Phantasma not exactly out yet (and Blazblue largely dead in most communities outside of Japan), I think it's the perfect game of its type to put in the lineup.

I am absolutely shocked that Street Fighter x Tekken was given a spot, after Mr. Wizard was clear last year that he'd never have it at Evo again after the embarrassment that was last year's SFxT tournament. Apparently, he has some inside information as to the workings of the 2013 patch (to the point where he can't even release the rules for the competition), but I just cannot fathom a way to patch that game to be better for spectators, to have better balance, and to fix the fundamental flaws in its base gameplay mechanics.

I think this is, much like last year when SFxT was announced to be part of the lineup well before it was even out, giving Capcom way too much benefit of the doubt and will likely blow up in Evo's face. You can make conspiracy theories about Capcom paying to have the game in the competition, that corporate influence is growing too large in the community, but at the end of the day it's a bad decision that falls on Mr. Wizard and co.

I also think that last year should have been the last breath for Mortal Kombat 9. I can see that some people enjoy it and it has a completely different community than most games in the FGC, but numbers have been declining since well before Evo 2012. I expect this game to have, by far, the least entrants of the seven games set in stone.

I love the idea of the Eighth Game being put up to vote and I especially love the idea of giving money to charity (god knows this community needs some positive press), but I don't exactly like the choices being based off the results of the facebook poll. The list should have been weeded down. Injustice and Divekick should not be on the list, as these games are not out yet and we don't know their viability on a competitive level. As much as I love it, I know that there are very few people who would stand up for Brawl over Melee, but having them both on there is just going to split donations. Even putting aside my dislike for My Little Pony, Fighting Is Magic is not done yet and what is completed is deeply flawed and broken.

I'm also disappointed that a few games are going to die based upon the result of the vote and including two fairly dead games in the lineup. Dead or Alive 5, Skullgirls, and Soulcalibur V were all great games that were released last year, but this will probably spell the end for their communities, judging by past years. Playstation All Stars will likely die out too, but you won't see me shedding any tears.

[/rant]

Anyway, this is shaping up to be an interesting Evo. I'm hoping I can head out this year, but I need to be able to find a summer job first before I can ask for time off to fly down to Las Vegas.

The VGCW may apparently be this year's Boshy if Baz McMahon puts more fighting games characters in. Most of the roster has been in a fighting game or two so that shouldn't be a problem.

Edit: Has the GB community ever been introduced to the VGCW?

Good analysis, you make a lot of sense. I think that with the exception of simultaneously having Capcom's weight to support the game and the large expectation (and utter disappointment) of a Capcom game behind it, SFxT and Skullgirls have had the similar reactions from the community. The rage against SFxT was harder, but it's still back, unlike Skullgirls which seems to have faded into obscurity.

His latest tweet still has FiM leading. I'm actually a little surprised since quite a few people interested in the game said they would donate for a different game on the basis of FiM not being finished. That being said, the Mane6 DevTeam made a post about the donation drive, and also mentioned that the results of the donations would not affect development process either way. There's still the rest of the month, and plenty of good games in the running. I don't have much faith in Melty Blood making the cut (sadly, doesn't seem to be as much hype for it), but Skullgirls, FiM, Melee, and Playstation All Stars all have at least a decent shot. Gonna be an exciting year either way.

So all we need is a millionaire from Dubai who secretly likes Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown and fighting breast cancer. Shouldn't be too hard right?

Bad jokes aside, looking forward to seeing some fightan game action on the streams again.

I wonder how many people would actually sign up to play FiM at EVO.

@DevourerOfTime: Don't Neathrealm fund the Mk9 stuff really well? I seem to remember last year and at other tournaments there was a big prizepot that got other players to have a go at the game. I hate watching the game but including it probably brought a fair amount of money in.

MK had the 2nd largest prize-pot but had the lowest amount of entrants.

If MLP wins the donation drive, they had better banish that shit to the off-off stream at the deadest times imaginable. I can't believe that they thought it would be a good idea to put multiple unfinished games on that list.

I'm just gonna quote what I said a few posts above yours:

  • They've already done myriad changes to reduce the strength of characters that could just pokepokepokepokepoke to win
  • Throws now remove all red life and come out faster, bringing back the tick game and making them a viable threat
  • Anti-airs have been made more reliable overall, with a lot of AA normals being added to the Tekken cast, so no more jump-in city meaning legitimate footsies
  • Pandora has been buffed so it might actually be a useful tool in certain situations
  • Red health regenerates slower and the zoom-in screen-freeze from the crossover combos (L>M>H>H) has been removed to speed up matches

At this point, it's going to be a completely different game when played at higher levels.

Update on the donation drive progress. Also some rule changing worked out, between Mane6 and the EVO guys, regarding FiM that I believe everyone can agree on.

who am I kidding, someone's gonna be mad regardless

Awesome to see that Skullgirls is still a possibility (albeit low) in 3rd, Melty isn't even on the top 10 :( Charity drive is running strong and it sounds like EVO is gonna have a lot going on this year.

I am ok with this change. MLP gets top 8 on steam, which is better as the game is not out and Melee will probably be the 8th game which it deserves.

@FLStyle:

MLP: FiM will still be on stage and stream a bit if they come out in first, only top 8 players of the exhibition tournament will get streamed/main-staged instead of the full event, which is probably a good thing since the first release of the game will probably still be young come July. Plus they've confirmed a return to the Indie Showcase, which will return. At the same time, the game in second will be fully on the lineup and be on stage and stream. All on a charity drive. Sounds like a win-win-win if you ask me. That being said, it looks like Skullgirls recently overtook SSBM in the runnings, and the month is only halfway over! Should be interesting to see how the lineup changes over time. Still looking most solid for FiM, Skullgirls, and SSBM (only $40 for Melty Blood, really?).

I am pretty surprised that Divekick isn't doing better than it is, given that two of the three major games donated to are also indie titles and that it seemed like it generated quite a bit of interest last year. I wasn't aware that development news had stopped, is that part of their publishing deal or are they just wanting to make the initial release a surprise? In any case, they should at least have a booth at the indie showcase.

At the moment, it appears that Melee, Skullgirls, and MLP: FiM are all pretty neck and neck. Skullgirls is behind first by only about $50 and Melee is only a few hundred behind that. I'm still hoping MLP will manage to stick in 1st since it would mean an additional game gets some main stage and stream action without really changing anything else.

To be brutally honest, none of those games deserve to be at Evo over the likes of SC5, VF5, GG, SF2/TS and CvS2.

Absolutely ridiculous to see that Skullgirls is not included on there, while MK9 is still there. What crap, I love MK9 as much as the next guy, but competitively it's just not up to par with the other games.

Such a bummer that game doesn't get the attention it deserves.

EDIT: Actually I take that back, MK9 is far better than SFxT. Why the hell is that game still played at all to ANY capacity?

Skullgirls have overtaken both Melee and Fighting is Magic in donations!

I kinda wanna see Fighting is Magic win 'cause I'd be interested in that exhibition, plus the second place game would get a tournament anyway. More EVO to enjoy!

People actually play MK9 and show up to tournaments. The same, unfortunately, cannot be said of Skullgirls. Hopefully if Skullgirls does end up as Player's Choice, that'll convince some players to take the game more seriously.

Are you kidding me? SKULLGIRLS. Overtaking Melee?

This must not be allowed to happen.

While that may certainly be true in terms of most of those games having a longer running history of competitive play, I like to think that at least Melee and Skullgirls have proven themselves to be capable of generating interest in competitive tournaments as well (the recent APEX series tournament, for example). And while titles like Soul Caliber, Virtua Fighter 5, and Street Fighter 2 are more recognizable than indie titles like Divekick, Fighting is Magic, and Skullgirls, I think the small titles deserve a chance at the main stage to showcase how good they can be. EVO management have allowed for such a chance this year, which I think is pretty cool, and two of the indies have a pretty strong chance at getting in. There are a lot of solid games already in EVO's main lineup, which is larger than last year's, so it certainly couldn't hurt to showcase lesser known and even non-traditional fighting games (like Divekick and Melee), if enough interest is shown. The fact that gauging interest is done via a donation drive to a good cause is an added positive. Or at least, that's how I see it.

The Skullgirls community has been pushing pretty hard over the last few days, if their Shoryuken thread about the drive is anything to go by. Part of the reason is that they are competing hard with the Melee supporters for at least that second place slot (should MLP continue to hold the lead).

Melee hasn't seen a lot donated towards it recently, but scuttlebutt has it that the SSBM fans are organizing a really big push for tomorrow, some kind of community-wide drive with added publicity to generate at least $1000 (probably more by the end). Both communities there have been pretty excited about the situation. With two weeks left, I wouldn't be surprised if a game managed to break the $10,000 mark on its own. It is pretty strange that so many of the big name games don't have a stronger push behind them. The top 3 contenders have over 3x the donations of any of the others on the list.

I really wanted to like Skullgirls but I don't really like team fighters. I'd still like to see it win though.

If you were to talk to a large percentage of the FGC, you would likely find that the Melee community, in general, is not particularly well liked. I have my own reservations about the quality of Melee as a fighting game unto itself, but the larger issue - as I have gathered, seems to be the protracted anti-social behaviour of several popular members of the 'smash' community who have caused trouble at several major tournaments - including Evo 2008, in turn causing the relative decline of Melee's popularity among other fighting game fans.

As for the indie titles, my big issue with them is that, other than Skullgirls, none of these titles have benefited from any testing to see if they are even viable fighting games. The MLP one, in particular, is not shaping up to remotely balanced or viable at all.

If anything, Soul Calibur 5 deserves another shot at Evo. The community around it, while comparably small, is pretty dedicated and the tournament at last year's Evo was pretty successful overall. Plus, unlike 3 and 4, 5 is an extremely solid game - and it's fun to watch to boot.

All fair points. I thought the usual reason for being against the SSB games was more so their mechanics/design (more of a fighting party game, in presentation, than a competitive fighting game by default) rather than community representation, but I honestly have little experience with the details of their more well known representatives.

I'd also have to agree that it makes sense to avoid games that haven't had the opportunity to be tested, though I can't imagine there's too much that can be messed up in balancing for Divekick. In MLP's case, I've played the leak a bit and, though I might be biased in that I'm excited about the game's development, I think it shows a lot of promise even in an almost year old pre-alpha build. From the last tournament that Mane6 showed at, it appears that improvements were well in hand and in the right areas. That doesn't change the fact that, as of this date, there's no opportunity to test it and that certainly makes it a gamble at best to vote for. I'd still very much like to see some indie titles make it to the big stage in part to give them some more renown, in part so that people back home (myself included, unfortunately, as Las Vegas is probably a little too far away for me to attend while maintaining studies) have more of a chance of seeing some skilled gameplay via streams, and in part because I just like the games and the teams behind them. I find the idea of small development teams building the games that they'd like to see, and succeeding in making them well, very inspirational and have a lot of respect for people like those in Lab Zero and Mane 6.

I actually haven't tried SCV myself yet (I own SCIII and SCIV, but neither of them felt as nice to me as SCII). I've seen some tournament play though, and it did look pretty appealing. Heck, I use a Hori SCV stick that used to have sponsered artwork on it on every other fighting game I own.

Edit: Well that didn't take very long. The SSBM push apparently already took off and they're already nearly at $13,000! Pretty darn impressive.

Does anyone know if you can only get into EVO if you're a competitor? I'm contemplating going just to watch next year.

Of course, there's lots of stuff going on that's not on the stream. Although EVO 2012 was so packed they had to introduce spectator passes for Finals Day so that they wouldn't get shut down.

At first, I thought Fighting is Magic would take it easily. Then Skullgirls started to take a very convincing lead, and I thought there was no way Melee could catch up. Now Melee is several thousand higher than Skullgirls and Fighting is Magic. This is craaazy. I'm happy that I'd be happy with any of these games taking the 8th game slot.

@Seroth: Not sure how much this affected it, but Spooky mentioned last night that once FiM was confirmed not to be one of the main games even if it won, people started to pull their donations out.

Everyone is obviously very supportive of their fighting game of choice. It's fun to watch. I hope something gets ahead of the MiP fighter by the end so it doesn't even get a separate tourney. Such a dumb concept (albeit hilarious)

EDIT: Holy fucking balls Melee obtained like $10,000 overnight, that's impressive! Some people must have REALLY wanted it at EVO

Well, it DOES allow you to just fight with a single character, and it balanced it pretty well I'd say.

I'm new to EVO, when are the streams, or did I miss them?

I'm hyped to see some competitive level Persona 4 Arena!

@Azurath: EVO isn't until July. If you want to watch some competitive Persona I'd tune in to SoCal Regionals this weekend. Persona is one of the games and it's one of the major tournaments of the year.
