Presenting the line-up for EVO 2013 - INJUSTICE is in! 9 games! Hype!

Update 3

On Wakeup SRK E133 last night (May 8th) EVO director Joey Cueller (MrWizard) announced that due to Injustice blowing up in the FGC, they're going to do an official Injustice tournament. This means there's 9 games at EVO 2013, which hasn't happened since EVO 2004.

Update 2

The Breast Cancer Charity Drive has ended, Super Smash Bros. Melee is going to EVO!

1st - Super Smash Bros. Melee$94605

2nd - Skullgirls- $78760

3rd - Super Street Fighter II Super Turbo- $39567

List of nominees

Over $200,000 in donations has been reached, a great day for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

-----------------------------------

Update - The line-up is official!

8 Games? That's crazy.

What is the Players' Choice?

Mentioned below is a Facebook poll held on the EVO page to see which game you wanted to see at EVO 2013. Every game that got over 500 votes is now eligible. If you want to see your game at EVO, you must donate to Breast Cancer Charity!

The USA Road to EVO season

There will be 4 Road to EVO events with Seeding Points available this year, a much smaller amount than last year. Top 16 at each of these 4 events will get seeding points.

SoCal Regionals

NorCal Regionals

Ultimate Fighting Game Tournament 9

CEO 2013

and more unannounced international events!

More info - http://shoryuken.com/2013/01/08/evo-2013-details-game-lineup-get-your-game-to-evo-and-road-to-evo-events/

-----------------------------------

The Road to EVO season is about the begin! Many events will hold seeding point tournaments between now and July leading up to EVO 2013 (July 12-14 at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas). This evening we'll find out which 4 to 8 games will be given the main stage spots.

When?

Today (the 8th) 7PM PST / 10PM EST / 3AM GMT

Where?

EVO 2012 Line-up

Potential EVO 2013 Games

My Predictions

The only two guaranteed to return are of course SSFIV and UMvC3. My guess is that they'll also replace Soulcalibur V with Tekken Tag 2, making its EVO debut.

After that? it's anyone's guess. Each game with the exception of the yet-to-be-released Injustice has something going for it, whether that's an existing fan-base, large community support or large developer/publisher support. Street Fighter X Tekken has a lot of negativity after its poor high-level showing last year, Capcom hopes to fix that with the Version. 2013 release. You may be wondering why the 2001 GameCube release Super Smash Bros. Melee has been included. The reason is that on the EVO Facebook page, a poll was created for users to vote for which game they would want to see at EVO 2013. The winner by some margin was Melee, the favoured game of the Super Smash Bros. franchise. Even PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, heavily influenced by the Smash Bros. series, has a shot with Sony's support.

NetherRealm Studios is in a strange place at the moment. With MK's competitive popularity fading and Injustice not out until April, it may be another year before you see a NRS game on the big stage. Unless Warner Bros. really puts in the effort to support Mortal Kombat for its 3rd (and presumably final) Championship.

Dead or Alive 5 may be the most played fighting game by casual fighting game fans this year, and has the support of IGN's IGN Pro League, but is that enough to ensure two 3D main stage games this year? Probably not.

The games I'm pretty sure won't be a main stage game this year are Skullgirls, Guilty Gear and Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown. Skullgirls, through various problems, some the fault of its developer, some not, was unfortunately the disappointment of last year. Guilty Gear and Virtua Fighter I believe will find themselves out in the cold in favour of their more popular 3D and anime counterparts, TTT2 and P4A.

The King of Fighters XIII had the 3rd largest entrants last year behind Street Fighter and Ultimate Marvel 3, and 95,000 viewers (on the English speaking Twitch.tv stream alone) tuned in to watch the Grand Final. But it hasn't had much to say for itself since, other than the recent Atlus Fighting Championships. Maybe this is Persona 4 Arena's time, with its fun game, supporting community and the pre-existing Persona fan-base.

Check back or watch the stream to see who the EVO founders have selected this year!

@Camoufrage: No idea, it just happened overnight, I don't know if it's a surge of donations of just one person donating 10K, it's pretty crazy though.

@FLStyle: I guess some Smash Bros. fans are really hardcore about their game being at EVO... that's disappointing. I was just talking with a friend of mine how much Skullgirls at EVO would help the game.

Melee hasn't seen a lot donated towards it recently, but scuttlebutt has it that the SSBM fans are organizing a really big push for tomorrow, some kind of community-wide drive with added publicity to generate at least $1000 (probably more by the end).

Turns out that donation drive combined a lot more than I had anticipated. It started with a fundraiser kicked off from a podcast as well as the most excited of the community. Not sure about much of the details, but supposedly the idea was to triple their donation pool thus far and ended up far exceeding their goal. People in the Melee community have also been spreading the word as far as possible via networking and word of mouth recently, which certainly hasn't hurt. The Skullgirls community is becoming more outgoing about the donation race as well, though perhaps on a bit of a smaller scale than Melee. In 13 days I think a lot could still happen, but it'd be difficult to out compete the fundraiser. Skullgirls is still climbing at a pretty good clip. MLP donations have stemmed off a bit since the rule change.

I won't be too upset if Melee makes it to the main stage, but I think I'd still prefer it if Skullgirls made it there. I imagine Skullgirls will run a side tournament if they don't make it into the 8th slot, but it'd be good if the game had a bigger appearance to expand interest. I have the 360 version, which has had very few players recently what with being behind on the update and whatnot. Hopefully the patch and PC version might get finished before EVO as well, to help bring new and old players to the game.

Prediction, everybody will be gearing up with specific counter teams against that (more at evo than at scr), So if Chris G takes it, it won't be with the morrigan team.

@StaticFalconar: I dont know, the east has been grinding out against chris for so long. It seems like everyone has been having trouble coming up with counters to morrigan. Best bet is still taking out doom, but chris covers his assists so well. Strider does decent, Strange does decent, but i dont know that there is any real hard counter to sister sister.

Woah they started streaming now??? Dammit, I'm still at work. ALSO I SHOULDN'T BE TYPING RIGHT NOW BUT FUCK IT I'M CLOCKING OUT IN A BIT ANYWAY.

Last I checked Skullgirls is also right behind Melee I believe. Also is it kinda weird that the guys dominating Marvel consistently (like top 3) are generally considered as "heels" (to borrow wrestling terms)? I'm talking about ChrisG and FChamp btw.

Characters are great for the scene, gives everyone more to get behind. I loved the interview between Neo and Clock, like a classic wrestling promo. The Heel pops off at the Face, and the face just smiles and says "get in the ring". Same thing with the interview between FGTV and WNF, Champ starts poppin off and OnlineTony says "it was tuesday". SO GODLIKE.

I shared these in the kappa reddit and figured i would share them here.

First off, Floe giving us a classic floeface during the massacre of Latif by Infiltration. Followed up by Marn stating(in an interview with caster Megumixbear) that he doesn't play fighting games anymore, but still comes to events because he loves the FGC. Which inspired this from me. He epitomizes why characters are important for the future of the scene. Normally i hate that kind of meme-spam but sometimes all you can do is make an image macro.

Just watching some of the archive, kind of a big oversight from Capcom to not include any of the DLC characters in the sfxt 2013 exhibition. Gootecks' face when they had to flip back to commentaey was the greatest thing I've ever seen though.

The first of the four Road to EVO events, SoCal Regionals 2013 has come to an end, awesome matches and great job by Level|Up Series.

With just over a week remaining, the top 3 for the 8th place EVO donations are:

  1. Super Smash Bros. Melee ($14,253.95)
  2. Skullgirls ($6,645.90)
  3. My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic ($5,235.85)

Skullgirls has taken the lead thanks to their stream with the voice actors.

  1. Skullgirls ($16,669)
  2. Super Smash Bros. Melee ($14,621)
  3. My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic ($5,246)

Not cool, man. Stream was insane, though, so I guess they earned it.

I don't really have a preference for which game gets in, but I'm curious as to why you're opposed to Skullgirls winning. Those guys worked hard on the game, it would have been nice for them to get the recognition they deserved for it. I don't think sales were that good so this could have brought more people into the game.
I mean everyone is obviously rooting for one game over the other, but it seems like you were actively opposed to Skullgirls taking it. How come?

That's ridiculous. I wanted MBAAC to win, but I knew Melty getting in a second time would require a miracle (especially with such a poverty-ass poverty game.)

Glad ST won, at least. That game I at least enjoy.

I think it's because it's a bad game and the community is pretty bad, or at least was dying way back a few months after its release. I haven't paid much attention to the FGC lately, but Skullgirls was a swing and a miss when it was all 2v2 with the same assist or 3v3 with the same two assists. I'm sure the guys who put out SF:EX worked hard, but that doesn't stop the game from being bad. EVO shouldn't be about "recognition," but about games the community wants to play.

Because I don't like it and I don't want to see it as a main game instead of something I'd be interested in. I'm also sour for having wasted money on that game only to very much dislike it.

This is going to get pretty damn crazy by the time the day is through. Well, craz-ier anyway. There's already over $110,000 donated. Far beyond anyone's expectations. Really hoping ST can take it, but whatever happens, the FGC has really come through on this one.

I think the problem with Skullgirls is it only had 8 characters and when your game is a 3v3 tag game (the most common selection) that gets really boring really fast.

I agree with this. The game design is sold and the animation incredible. It just got old for me fast. I'd rather just play Marvel/

@Petiew: I came back in and caught a tournament only a few weeks ago (maybe a month or two, I dunno to be honest) and it was pretty bad. Literally two assists were used by the entirety of top 32 and the point character was one of two characters. Add in that it was essentially a high-low game into TOD, and I don't really care about the game at all. Like a really dumb version of GG, minus every single mind game and trap game in it.

Sucks, because I wanted a good 3v3 game since I never really jived with MvC3 at all. None of the characters felt right.

I have not been keeping up with Skullgirls at all. That sounds boring to watch.

Yoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Dat ST snipe. I would love to see Super Turbo getting in there. Not a huge fan of SSBM, but I guess their community wants it so, w/e. Race is pretty tight, <2k separating them easily within range for big last minute snipes.

I'd rather watch SFxT. Ver. 2013 over MK. That is my least hyped game.
