SoCal Regionals 2015 (October 9th-11th) Preview + Capcom Pro Tour October & EVO moment 37 interview!

It's finally here, SoCal Regionals, for real this time!

SoCal Regionals 2015 Preview

No Caption Provided

We live in a post-EVO 2015 world! And yet the road to December's Capcom Cup continues. SCR 2015 was originally slated for May (before EVO 2015) but due to venue issues it's been bumped to October. Its premier event status for the Capcom Pro Tour is still active so its USFIV tournament still has a spot in the Capcom Cup for its winner, as well as Capcom Cup seeding points and $15,000 bonus for the top 8.

SoCal Regionals is run by one of the original world class fighting game players Alex Valle and his production company/group, Level|Up Series. They are also known for Wednesday Night Fights, the primary West Coast fighting game weekly, which just yesterday announced its new venue at the brand new eSports Arena in Santa Ana, California.

Wednesday Nights is scheduled to return on October 21st. So it's a very busy month for Valle and Level|Up!

News

Kotaku interviews Daigo Umehara, Justin Wong and Seth Killian about EVO moment 37

"I wanted to show Justin that this wasn't going to be an ordinary fight."

A well put together video by Kotaku (minus them mistaking Daigo for Raoh). I especially like the description of their mindsets during the match.

Full list of Street Fighter V reveals since EVO 2015

The King of Fighters XIV was unveiled and everyone hates its graphics

An extremely early version of KOFXIV was shown at TGS and it hasn't gone down well! I will reserve judgement of their decision to drop their graphical style for polygons until a version much closer to release is shown. Also I hope the online is good, or just better than XIII. May give this a try myself when it releases.

Thanks for reading and enjoy watching!

I'm glad to finally get this blog up, it's been delayed several times, but now that it's up I'm going to be watching as much fighting game events as I can. Hope you will too!

Dude what is with this backpedaling? First Mika and now Cammy? I don't understand how this could make the game any less ridiculous. Cammy's ass is still hanging out during the match, why cover it up on the character intro?

All of this censorship stuff is really half-assed (That pun just writes itself)

@viciousbearmauling: I'd hardly call it censorship. Tons of things change before a game is released, and at least this gives some indication that Capcom is aware of how creepygross their shit is getting. Even if it's too late to fix the character models before Feb, maybe this will give them a slightly different design philosophy moving forward.

I mean, probably not, but one can hope.

Also sad about the Kinniku Buster but it probably would have caused all sorts of problems with costumes moving forward. Better to change the move than limit costume designs.

I'd much rather they'd change the character designs/costumes.

@hassun: I'm talking about future costume designs that might have had weird clipping issues etc, especially since you get a juicy freeze-frame if you KO with her CA. Seems silly to preserve one minor aspect of one animation of one attack if it means you cut yourself off from any future costume that might have difficulty properly portraying a character in an upside-down splits.

@starvinggamer: Do they really care about that though? Plenty of later SFIV costumes cause a lot of clipping during some moves.

@hassun: Probably? I mean, what animator doesn't care about clipping? Just because it happened in SFIV doesn't mean they didn't care about it, they just didn't feel the annoyance of clipping outweighed the coolness of whatever costume they were designing.

Also yo Snake Eyez is on Ultrachen!

What stick did Infil use to this point?

Also yay Infil going to tournaments again. Please Razer boys go gatekeep Dreamhack.

The banner on R/Kappa is hilarious.

@fredchuckdave: Afaik Infiltration uses a Razer Atrox with a Korean lever. Not sure about the buttons.

And I don't think we'll see him at tournaments before CapCup. Unless they can convince him to go to Lyon but I kind of doubt it. Hiding tech and preparing for Capcom Cup is all that matters. We do know he's working on Guy, just like Momochi. Why exactly both of them are working on Guy is a question I don't know the answer to though.

Many years in the future kids will ask what killed SFIV and people will know the answer is not SFV but Elena.

After the duffing Poongko got early on from Xian I'm really surprised to see him end day one with the best record. It seemed like he was dropping of for a while but this might give him some good momentum moving toward Capcup.

I can't remember, is it just the round robin, or does that seed into a bracket? Just trying to figure out if Kindevu has any chance left. Or MOV I guess.

@starvinggamer: It's a round robin tournament. Normally there is a final match at the end but I'm not sure it's still there with the CPT and all.

@hassun: I remember last year like there was a deciding match between GamerBee and... Tokido? Fuudo? to get into CPT and I can't recall if it was an actual final match or if it was just the deciding match on who won happened to fall at the end of the tournament. Or maybe this is all a figment of my imagination?

Fuudo got in at Dreamhack Winter, the last possible opportunity. And he did it at Gamerbee's expense.

@l1ghtn1n: Gonna pat myself on the back here for claiming Elena as strongest of USFIV characters right when Ultra came out. It's like Zero all over again.

But yeah, MOV is free to Elena, Justin beat him too.

EDIT: I mean free

EDIT2: Hm, if Kindevu gets the autoqual that means not only did Dakou bomb this weekend, he gets edged out of CPT entirely. Yikes.

DON'T GET RUSHED DOWN MISSE! Fuck.

@starvinggamer:To be fair Dakou sucked most of the year so /shrug (12 points + 128 for winning one event). He did go to a fair amount of stuff as well, unlike Misse who's only been to like 5-6 events. Not to say Balrog/RB/etc. didn't suck most of the year also; 32 is a lot.

Infiltration already travelled to Singapore, even has the RZR jacket on. Wonder if they will announce the new character.

Edit: Guess not.

Fun fact: Poongko has now won more CPT2015 Premier tournaments than Infiltration.

@hassun: Can't imagine they'd give up their last big reveal before capcup. Only other major reveal I can think of might be story mode, but that would be 1000% less impactful at capcup when compared to a new character. Then again, if they wait until like right before finals to do the reveal, no one will get a chance to have any hands on time. Hm.

This weekend has 2 major tournaments coming up.

First up there is the -surprisingly stacked- Street Grand Battle 2015. Sadly there seems to have been an issue with the original location so the tournament has been moved to a new location.

Furthermore Xian will not be able to attend.

The other big event of the weekend is the conclusion of the Topanga A League.

The character choices have also been revealed:

  • Daigo: Evil Ryu ONLY
  • Bonchan: Sagat & Ryu
  • Kazunoko: Yun & Seth
  • Nemo: Rolento ONLY
  • Momochi: Ken & Guy

@fredchuckdave: Just today Haitani posted he's not going so his chances of getting in the Capcom Cup Finals are gone.

Would be kind of sad if Luffy won Dreamhack. I'd rather have an exciting winner, setting up a cool first round match with Infiltration or Momochi. I don't think Dakou is that player.

Other competitors: http://binarybeast.com/xUSFIV1510080#participants

Seeing some interesting possibilities like Reiketsu, Ryan Hart, Infexious, Pro Fluke, MBR, Kreymore or Phenom.

Looks like next week will be a good time to get the blog for Capcom Cup up, this video will make a fine addition. I'll give it a watch this evening after some USFIV training.

PS. I'm actually playing fighting games now, what a novel idea!

@flstyle: Sounds good. Although I still have massive misgivings about the organisation of the actual Capcom Cup Finals. It's starting to look like a goddamn TGS tournament. I sure am not looking forward to barely seeing any matches on stream and a FT2 format for a tournament as big and important as this.

Lots of bad news related to Street Grand Battle as well. Big Bird no longer going, Santarou and Kichikenno longer going to that nor going to Dreamhack, ...
Apparently the Paris attacks have a lot of people worried.

@l1ghtn1n: I never got good at Guilty Gear but it did feel like I was making progress over time en route to the platinum. Was fun /shrug It's just a game I'd have to put in like 3-4 months of work to get really good at it (in terms of execution) and SFV will take like a day tops per character. I will say it does have a dedicated enough fan base to where you'll rarely have trouble finding matches online; despite said fan base being less than 100k people.

The challenge mode is fantastic for teaching you things about the game as well as fighting games in general and the tutorial is better than everything's tutorial including Skullgirls.

2 out of 3 until top 16 is interesting, not as big of a deal as if it was all the way to top 8. I like that it's all in one day frankly; unless we were getting like FT7's or something otherwise. Most of the players you'd consider better in a shorter set are matched up against a similar player or were probably going to win anyway. Tonpy vs JWong possibly even more free.

Bonchan vs Misse is probably the most impacted by this; sucks for Bonchan if he loses I suppose.
