For me, the best plot twist I’ve played in a while is in The Wolf Among Us.
The way a plot twist works is that the teller gives the audience information that allows the audience to make ASSUMPTIONS about the story. Then, later, the teller gives more information that forces the audience to realize that they f’d up by making assumptions and the blame lies in them.
Often, storytellers will have the reveal of new information happen at the end of the second act. This new information is what prpopels the hero toward his final confrontation in the third act. This is probably the most cliche and easy plot twist to create.
The much more rare twist comes at the end of the film. The end-twist happens after the entire story is revealed and forces the audience to reconsider the entire story, often with no explanation. This can leave the audience thinking, WTF?!
That is such an amazing note to end on.
The Wolf Among Us does that perfectly, in my mind. It tells a whole, satisfying story that you feel wraps up nice;y. Then, bam. WTF?!?
