Flynn's GOTY 2017 (WIP)

2017 huh? Well at least we have…wait this sounds familiar. Seriously though, fuck you 2017. This has been a mess of year, we all know that, I’m not saying anything new. But with the many consistent and terrible lows of this year, I’ve had some very personal highs. A couple of ‘em even came from games!

While I played a lot of games this year, I played fewer new releases than I did last year. That being said, this might be my favorite year of gaming since I’ve been alive (I was born in ’95), besides maybe 2007 and 2012. There were a few things I didn’t play this year that I still wanna check out or that I haven’t put enough time into. Those include Hollow Knight, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Tacoma, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, Little Nightmares, Yakuza 0, Doki Doki Literature Club and Assassin’s Creed Origins. Here are a few honorable mentions that didn't make the list.

Honorable Mentions

  • Destiny 2
  • PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
    • o So, I only played one game of Battlegrounds this year. I don’t have a good enough computer to run it but my buddy decided to pick it up and let me try it out. What proceeded was some of the tensest moments I felt all year. Barely knowing the controls, crashing a buggy upside down and scrounging for any supplies available all lead to my crowning moment. I hide myself in an unsuspecting home, leaving the doors open, hoping people will think it’s already been scavenged. However, as I wait for any signs of life checking all my corners, I accidentally fire my gun giving away my position. Within moments, I hear a vehicle pull up to the house. I prep myself on the stairs, waiting for anyone to come in. I’m ready. Someone walks through the door, I empty an entire clip claiming my first life. My victory is short lived though as I realize they are not alone. I scramble up the steps, waiting outside the door, hoping to catch them by surprise. Bang. In an instant, it’s all over. Sometimes you just can’t beat a shotgun. Seriously though, Battlegrounds has been some of the most fun I’ve had watching a game this year, that alone makes it worth a mention.
  • Call of Duty: WWII
    • o I’ve got to stop letting my friends convince we’ll finally stick with a Call of Duty again. Nothing against the series or my buddies, I just don’t know if we’ll ever be able to at this point. Regardless, the time I did spend playing multiplayer this year was still some of my most enjoyable. I’m personally more into objective based game types and War really delivered on that for me. Game after game of War, the feeling of triumph as we finally built that stupid bridge, only to lose in the last moments as we can’t advance out tank because of such an enemy hold…some of the most heartbreaking moments…
  • Steamworld Dig 2
  • What Remains of Edith Finch

I can't wait to catch up on everyone else's lists and checkout anything I've overlooked, which are bound to be plenty. With all that being said, there’s never been a better time to be playing games and let’s see what you’ve got 2018!

I find that it's been tough for me to put my thoughts down for this one. I had been looking forward to Breath of Wild for so long and I had my initial reservations if Nintendo was actually going to deliver on this one. That idea of "see that mountain..." seemed like Nintendo saw an advertisement for Skyrim and thought "Hey we can do that" but ignored all the years of said mentality coming from everyone and everywhere. With such a huge landmass was there going to be enough to keep me engaged or even just occupied with the game? How would a departure from Zelda's very set formula play out? Yes, the series has tried to play with some non-linearity in the past, most recently with A Link Between Worlds, but nothing to this scale as Nintendo was proposing. And you know what, not only were these reservations quelled, but they met and exceeded my expectations more than I possibly could have possibly imagined.
