Well hey-now, I wouldn't go that far with any assumptions concerning dedication to the site or whatnot. I just think there's a point where the level of "unprofessional-ness" goes beyond the point of casual fun-loving goofiness to something that becomes a little disappointing or frustrating to watch. I realize that the obvious solution would be for me, the viewer, to simply close my browser tab, but there is plenty of aspects of Giant Bomb I still quite enjoy. The point is, it seems like the complaints people have been bringing up could be remedied. I think the problem is that these issues or criticisms tend to be expressed in such a polarizing way that any nugget of truth or reason gets completely disregarded.
This is the internet after all.
@fontelroy: It just seems like he doesn't care, there's no passion or love there. He's just going through the motions checking time to see when he gets to go home.
I get that this behaviour is totally fine, but when you're on camera and are suppose to (I mean, I think?) entertain people and provide a fun experience this is a total downer. I don't really watch UPF anymore, I don't consider that a good thing.
One thing I'd like to say as well is if I'm paying for something I should be able to criticize it as well without being called a whiner and part of a "shitty community."
There seem to be more people whining about people criticizing GB content than there are people criticizing GB content.
It can very much feel like the lack of knowledge about certain things during Quicklooks and UPF games is due to apathy. I feel shitty for singling Brad out, but him launching H1Z1 to "see where these Battle Royale games started" really typifies this sort of attitude since this has been a popular mod since Arma 2. My intention in writing this is not to simply complain or specifically put Brad down, but he does seem to pretty consistently exhibit this behavior. Let me once again reiterate, I feel shitty for continuing the parade of negativity; one of my favorite moments in Giant Bomb history is his Mile High Club achievement in Call of Duty 4.
After reading a few of these comments I was immediately reminded of their recent reddit AMA. Here's Vinny's breakdown of the various tasks at Giant Bomb where he states that they rarely go into a game cold;
"Quick Look: 2-3 Hour game prep time. 1 hour recording time. 15-20 minute editing/processing time. 30-45 minute export time. 10 minute uploading and page generation time.
Beastcast: 2 Hour prep time. 2-3 Hour recording time. 45-60 minute editing/processing time. 10-15 minute export time. 30 minute uploading and page generation time.
Live Show: 0-2 Hour game prep time. 0-30 minute studio prep time. 2 hour recording time. 15-20 minute editing/processing time. 1 hour export time. 10 minute uploading and page generation time."
And he continued;
"Sure. There's downloading or installing the actual game. Then playing it far along enough to see if it's going to be worth QLing. Occasionally, we play things from scratch, but very rarely are we not restarting. I could probably count on two hands the times we've just gone in cold into something, at least in recent memory."
Unless I'm missinterpretting things here this struck me as waaaaaay not the case based on the amount of knowledge shown during a lot of Quicklooks and, in particular, UPF's.
Yup, another week of awesome video games and a 100% waste of time and Premium membership on UPF - Just as I expected - Click fast forward, Click Fast forward - Click fast forward - and done.
I really wish they'd bring back TNT and trash this trashcan of a show.
Oh, and make @brad retire from playing video games as its so painful to watch. Or at least make Brad a heel. Come on .. his baby face "I'm so dumb" "I'm too lazy to do anything before I get on camera" is getting annoying! be it UPF or Quicklooks..
Thank you.. Guy who doesn't play video games for a living.. But loves GB.
It really sounds like you love GB.
Look, I love Giantbomb. And ethanss was a tad rude about it, but he's not entirely wrong. UPF quickly became the most professional/lazy show on the site. Catch myself watching it just to have something on, instead of being excited for it like I used to be.
I agree. He's a bit too crass but I agree with him 99%.
@ajamafalous: this probably isn't the answer you want, but I highly recommend using Pocket Casts instead of Apple's built-in podcast app. In my experience it works quite a bit better in almost every aspect. And it keeps playback positions synced across devices, including pc through their web app.
I very much agree.
No one has to read this. I just have to write it some place public.
I first heard Drew and the whole GB crew on their 3/4/2014 episode and was quickly hooked. I was able to listen to podcasts while I was working and, as such, listened to all of 2014, 2013, and 2012 (backwards, yes I know) in the course of a few months. Because of this and the very real impact this has had on my life, I feel the need to honor Drew in some way as a thanks for the hours of joy he has helped bring me.
Over the years, certain aspects of the other various personalities have rubbed me the wrong way, almost certainly due to excessive listening. Drew, however, was always a delightful presence and has made me more cognizant of defects in my own character which I have diligently worked on ever since regularly listening to and watching him.
Drew is the best of the internet personified in a way that almost does not exist today. He has a personality and his own interests, but does not trample over others with his opinions. He keeps his personal life personal in a healthy way and recognizes and upholds a public image/private life balance which is completely undervalued in the age of social media. He knows a lot but always seems ready to listen, learn, and embrace new things rather than dismiss contrasting views by yelling over them, ignoring them, or deriding them. His controlled tone, language, temper and overall demeanor during his time in front of the mic/camera are something to aspire to.
Because of all this, the end of this podcast felt like a gut punch. I wish Drew all the best, obviously, and I know he will excel at whatever he sets his mind to but, for someone who started listening in 2014, his leaving hits very hard. Best of luck Drew, and I hope the internet gets more out of you (preferably beyond his lucrative meme empire).
1080p 60!! Congratulations guys! I'm so happy right now I'm embarrassed by how happy I am.
@aziridine: That is an excellent question that I would love to hear the answer to as well.
You know, a pig. Like he ones that have udders that you can milk. Pigs.
The picture quality of this video is not good. I'm using the html 5 player and it's set to the HD feed. I'm assuming Giant Bomb doesn't host higher quality videos due to file size/ bandwidth considerations. However, I would happily still pay to be a premium subscriber if they also spit out a youtube video version that was 1080p 60fps when the game calls for it since hey you can do that on youtube for free!
Feel better Mr. Austin!
