Basketball is forever 0

Note: I don't play online, so that part and "meta" balance isn't covered here.At this point, where I've unlocked everything twice (didn't do cloud saves on 360, oops), went through the single player tour mode as much as possible (more on that later), and spent entire weekends playing with a friend in town visiting, NBA JAM OFE will live on my Xbox hard drive forever, whatever name Microsoft comes up with next. It's essentially the same formula from the good old days. 2-vs-2, shove, swat without r...

Touched and went our separate ways 0

Octopath gives quite the stunning first impressive, with charming melodies and 3D-mimicking-2D-pixel look. It would almost seem to be the dream RPG of children (I am one of them) growing up decades ago, evoking the warmth of sweet memories past, doubly so when the modern sunlight tech shines through foliage and buildings. It's battle system is an evolution too, still turn-based but with several key twists that spice up the formula. Each enemy has weakness types, and can be staggered for extra dam...

Stirred, not shaken 0

This is one of the many "vibe" indie games overpopulating the earth in recent years, one that I had mild interest in but quickly forgotten at release. If you had done the same, allow me to pique your interest once again. Of a dozen of so highly-regarded indies I binged through recently, this was the standout. Of course, I was primed to enjoy this one: a quick glance at the trailer shows pixlated cyberpunk, with proper brain jacking and body modding, a moody atmosphere, and quirky point-and-click...

Battle Chess 0

Into the Breach is the highly anticipated follow up from the makers of FTL, this time tackling the mech vs monsters theme, with very innovative turn-based strategy mechanics. It is a fantastic game I'd easily recommend to a fairly diverse audience: fans of run-based roguelikes, turn-based strategy, mechs, general scifi, puzzle games, etc.The overall setup is fairly simple: monster emerge from underground to terrorize the planet, and the player is tasked with managing pilots and equipment on a te...

Fresh start 0

Assassin's Creed Origins takes a mumble jumble of systems and somehow works them into a (mostly) coherent whole. It is a welcome refresh of the series, both story-wise and mechanically. I usually do not enjoy open world games. Despite my interest in the historic eras the AC games are set in, 3 was the only one I tolerated to completion. In many ways AC: Origins was tailored for me, in that it is basically an RPG. The game nails is its story and world-building. AC:O is a story of revenge, a...

Found verdict: plan C 0

Destiny is a game of spectacular highs and even lower lows. The shooting and movement mechanics are so fluid and enjoyable, yet the map/navigation/mission-select system wrapped around everything is painfully tedious and unnecessary. The graphics and art design are breathtaking, but they get stale fast as players grind the same missions for rewards over and over again. The game is most fun in co-op, yet almost all lessons learned in the MMO genre in the past decade was ignored. Loot is addicting,...

Into the wilderness 0

Nintendo absolutely nailed their first attempt at an open world Zelda game. BoTW is made from various ingredients taken from other games, refined and mixed into a magical dish. Although it still suffers from a couple problems inherent to the open world genre, it is the easiest to pick up and lose several hours at a time in.Aptly named, the game's primary enemy in the game is the wilderness itself. Not only does Link have to survive intense heat, cold, rain, and other hazards (each of which has m...

Leaving everything behind 0

A story about explorers leaving the Reaper threat behind for a whole new galaxy, Mass Effect Andromeda brings improved 3rd person combat, Dragon Age Inquisition-like open world roaming, and shiny new graphics. Unfortunately, the utter mess the characters find themselves in upon awaking from cryosleep is a perfect metaphor of the game itself. One cannot help but feel the newly found was not worth what had to be left behind for this voyage.Leaving the previous galaxy, all those beloved characters,...
