Most Anticipated 2017 (Revised)

Boy. Hell of a year so far. Well, in games that is. Although, I guess it's been a hell of a year outside of games, too, just in a not-so-great way. My initial "Most Anticipated 2017" turned out to be a little... let's say "off". Most of the top games were either delayed (Red Dead 2, God of War) or turned out to be baaaaaaaad (Mass Effect, why you gotta do me like that?), but a few turned out to be on point like Horizon and apparently Zelda, although I haven't gotten my candy ass a Switch yet, so I don't know how great Zelda is for myself. People went gaga for it, though, so there ya go. Anyway, now that E3 has come and gone and we have a more solid idea of what will actually come out this year, I thought I'd make another list, 'cause fuck it. So here's my revised Most Anticipated Games of 2017 list!

List items

  • Dear God in Heaven, this thing looks NUTS. Nintendo's is a really strong place right now, which is interesting because I thought they looked quite bad at the beginning of the year. The initial launch line up for the Switch looked anemic and too spread out, but that system is already starting to come into its own. I haven't played a Mario game in... good Christ, 20 years... no wait, I played a bit of "Galaxy 2", but wow, it's been 20 years since "Super Mario 64". That feels... *sigh*.

ANYWAY, you can use Mario's hat to possess everything in the game and turn it into a Mario version of said thing. Cars, Gumbas, Bullet Bills and, oh yeah, a GODDAMNED TYRANNOSAURUS REX COMPLETE WITH HAT AND MUSTACHE. Fuck.

  • Same thing I said last time. It's coming out in just under a couple months, so the anticipation is rising a bit. Ninja Theory has been on an upward trajectory with each release, so I have hopes for this one. The more I think about this game, the more excited I get. It sounds incredibly risky, which is right up my alley. I like risks and there's not enough of them these days. Besides, the horror genre has this nasty habit of painting the mentally ill as monsters. The crux of this game is making the mental illness itself a monster and the "victim" the hero that must fight and overcome it. That's the risk I was talking about and I think that's an important risk to take. The narrative around mental illness is muddied in ignorance and a lack of empathy. A video game isn't going to change that, but it's nice to see someone try.

  • I *loved* "Wolfenstein: The New Order" and think it might be the most underrated game of this generation so far. I don't usually ascribe to the "under/overrated" thing because hey, people like what they like and don't what they don't, but I don't get it with that game. It was an absolute blast and a complete surprise. It starts rough, which is probably the problem, but that doesn't last long at all and I feel like there have been games that started out rougher for longer stretches that get passes (*cough* Destiny *cough*) and it boggles the mind. But whatever. It was good and that's all that matters and this new one looks to be taking it up a few clicks, which sounds like a fine thing to me.

  • I spent a grand total of maybe 5 hours with the first game (if that) and I'm not sure why I stopped there because I was utterly charmed by it. It was a gorgeous game with a wonderful air to it. It didn't feel like most JRPGs, but similar enough to scratch that itch. I'm not typically a fan of JRPGs, but I'm perpetually willing to give the genre a shot or two. I've yet to finish either FF XV or Persona 5, so maybe I should give up on that crusade, but I really want to give Ni no Kuni another shot. And looks just so damn pretty.

  • Fingers still tightly crossed that this one comes out this year. Website still says 2017.

  • What the actual fuck, man, how did this thing come out looking so good? Complete left field situation for me on this thing. And "XCOM" style turn-based strategy game with Mario taking cover and smoking fuckers with his goddamn GUN. MARIO HAS A GUN. This is going to be a year of firsts for Mario and while I'm actually a little put off by Mario pulling out a gat, the whole situation is so weird I can't help but go along with it.

  • You know, the second Star War Battlefront game. This is the first time a game titled "Star Wars Battlefront II" has ever existed ever. Shut up, don't look it up, I'm right....

(The first "Star War Battlefront II" was one of my favorite games on the PS2 and while I was severely disappointed with the last "Battlefront" game, it looks like DICE is getting it right this time. We'll see. What they showed at E3 looked fun.)

  • Man, I'd like to play a good, significant AC game again. I'm glad Ubisoft took a year off and I want to see what that entails. I always thought it was a terrible idea to make this series an annual one and, whadoyaknow, I was right. Half of this games are bad and half are good, but of that half, only a couple are exceptional. It's a franchise that squandered it's potential and I'd love to see it get back on track in some way. No clue if this is doing that (didn't show well at E3), but I'm probably going to pick this one up regardless to see what's going on with it.

  • Never played the first one because I didn't have a Wii U, but I plan on picking up a Switch in the near future and this game is releasing in the window. So, I'll give it a go.

  • Again, same as what I said on the other list. I like Dontnod quite a bit, so I'm very hopeful for this game.

  • I'm somehow both disappointed with what they've shown and said about this game and also... sold? Like, I'm going to play this game and I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it. But... I don't know. It's seems like they're just making a good version of the game they already made, which is not the game I wanted them to make in the first place. It looks like more of the same, just good. And I guess that's enough.

  • The more I see of this game, the more uneasy it makes me and not in a good way. I loved the first game despite the fact that the story was a turd on Tolkein's coffin. That Nemesis System was killer and I really just want to play a game with something like that again. I'm kind of amazed nobody's stolen since the first game. However, there looks like there's too much going on in the new one. It's looks... crowded with Stuff and Things. I'm worried those Stuff and Things are going to get in the way of the Nemesis System, which is the only reason I'm interested in this game to begin with.

  • I don't know, man. I think I want to play it? I love the Saint's Row games (well, 3 and 4) but there's something about what Volition's shown of this game that just isn't really doing it for me. But, by that same token, it looks fine and is another Saint's Row-ish game. We'll see. Very much a "wait for reviews" situation, which while true of all games, this is a game I think I need someone to actually tell me why I should be excited about it.... so maybe this shouldn't be on this list... nah, fuck it. It's sort of a Saint's Row game, so it stays on the list. I hope it's good.
