Games I played in 2017

List items

  • Completed on January 7th, with the 108 stars.

I'm planning to complete Suikoden II soon, so I wanted to have a complete save of the first game first. Also, I only had completed the game once, probably 15 years ago.

The original Suikoden holds up surprisingly well. This game gets to the point. It can be completed in 25 hours, and you don't feel like the developers skipped content to meet a deadline. The experience system is also very generous with xp when there is a level gap, meaning that it is easy to get unused characters to the same level as the others.

Some of its mechanics are a bit clunky but I'm guessing they also were at the time of release.

  • Completed on January 29th, on Veteran difficulty.

I had head a lot of good buzz about this game last year, more specifically about it being a kind of 2D-XCOM. It sounded right up my alley.

While I had a lot of fun playing the fifteen hours campaign, I couldn't help but be disappointed by the overall experience. I would argue that this game is more like XCOM-light dans 2D-XCOM.

The basic mechanics are pretty cool and reminded me a bit of Valkyria Chronicles. However, the encounters soon all felt pretty similar and and was going from fight to fight as fast as I could to see the end.

Strangely, I think I liked this game more than Steamworld Heist.

It still amazes me that Nintendo, of all companies, would build an open world game this smart and this bold. The physics, chemistry and cooking systems are right at home in Breath of the Wild's Hyrule and make for truly unique moments.

This might be the best game ever. Time will tell, but until then it is undoubtedly the best Zelda since ALTTP and the best 3D open world ever built.

A different take on the souls formula. Even though this game is absolutely huge, the level formula makes it easier to digest.

The story made no sense at all, but it didn't matter because the gameplay and sense of atmosphere of the levels were so strong. The difficulty level was pitch perfect and provided a truly challenging challenge that felt great to overcome.

Right after Bloodborne, Nioh is one of my favorite souls game.

I thought the gameplay was mostly pretty solid for a 1992 ARPG. I completed the game in about 10-12 hours, which felt like the perfect length for this kind of game.

The gameplay loop being divided between dungeon crawling and town restoration reminded me a lot of games like Act Raiser and Dark Cloud, which is a great thing in itself and is well executed here.

That being said, the story was only average and the romance plot thrown it at the end felt out of place.

I'm looking forward to playing Illusion of Gaia, the next game in the series.

  • Completed on June 2nd

This was the longest RPG I've ever completed, finishing the game at over 101 hours. I would say that I've enjoyed most of that time.

Persona 5 is a great game, but it is in my opinion overshadowed by the superior Persona 4 (and P4G). Even though the story was more serious in tone this time around, it didn't hit as hard emotionally.

While I though Morgana, Ryuji and Futaba had excellent character development, the rest of the main cast were mostly a let down.

That being said, the game looks amazing and played just as good as the rest of the series. On its own, it was a fantastic JRPG.

Like everybody, I had heard that the campaign was amazing so I had my expectations pretty high. And while it was indeed a great military FPS campaign, it did not resonate with me as hard as the new Doom or Wolfenstein.

On a design and technical perspective perspective, the game kept surprising me during the whole campaign. It's pretty amazing how many user-focused features Respact Entertainment managed to put into the game, from super-snappy menus and excellent frame rate to light-dynamic tutorials.

I haven't played any CoD game regularly since Modern Warfare 2, so I was a bit hesitant to jump into the multiplayer. After playing a few matches, I had to conclude that those fast, twitch-reflex, shoot first think later games weren't for me anymore. Over the past two years I've played around 300 hours of Rainbow Six Siege, I don't have the patience to get good at games that require mostly twitch reflex so be competitive.

I had a bug on the second to last quest which prevented me to complete the game - I had to watch the ending on YouTube. Bummer. :-(

Other than that, the game was a lot of fun. It felt like a more polished experience than Stick of Truth was. The plot was more focused and tight, like some of the best South Park episodes.
