Games that shaped my childhood

I compiled this list with no particular order in mind. All of these games I played when I was so young and could easily play once again and get back into it. They really shaped the way I view games today. If I had a bit more Mario and Zelda in there would I have played Super Meat Boy today? If I played Doom a lot more, would I enjoy Gears of War?

List items

  • Taught me all the evil's of giant corporations. Full of metaphors about the wrongs of blindly following the media and speaking out against injustice in the workforce.

  • Still probably one of my most favourite games. Great story surrounded by a fantastic world of ruined pop-culture and failed ideals.

  • Still the only game where you can shoot a child in the groin. That should say enough.

  • My first experience with the realm of DnD.

  • Introduced to me through Baldur's Gate, this game ended for me in the way a movie would. Even though none of the characters I had created had any personality, I inevitably gave them all one. Their adventures through Icewind Dale was long, but full of excitement.

  • First game I owned and played, etc, etc. This was such a wonderful game to me. Firstly getting me into those old school RTS's, secondly because it has such a rad little story of it's own.

Robots, living on a robot world (sometimes, other times there is shreds of metal right under the ground). You play this commander who literally can kill someone by absorbing them into your resources.

  • Before I had Star Craft, I had this game. Never really got around to finishing it, but I do remember the joys of sticking dog and man, and then tank on dog.

  • This game took so many of my hours. I have not played the sequel, but I don't feel like I need to. This game has said enough to me.

  • I only played the demo of it long before I could get my grubby hands on the real game. Demo alone, I sunk many hours into.

  • You know what sucks? That I never got around to playing the actual game. But like Age of Empires 2, I possessed the demo which I played on and on and on. It barely got boring to me as the same map would change, but I hear that was taken out of the second game? Does this mean I loose something that made the game special for me?

  • And this ladies and gentlemen is my very first FPS. I'm glad I started playing such a well crafted game. You say little, and so invisible is the plot, but involving and believable none the less.

  • Out of all the expansions (all two of them), this one was my favourite. Easy and fairly short but packs a lot of character. It's never just another day on the job.

  • A little more gory and a lot more violent than Half-Life, I had a lot of fun carving through alien-cyborgs.

  • This game was great. The first 'outside of the movies' Star Wars experience and already battling a troop of dark Jedi. The first game I can recall that had a morality system as well.

  • You know what's better than drowning a man in a panda suit? Nothing.

  • Another great Bullfrog game. I love how popping someone's head is a cure.

  • The one and only.

  • The most fun I've ever had with a TBS to this day. The races and amount of exploration there is to do can keep anyone entertained for the good part of a month. Even then, there's still a lot of joy to be had getting the most out of strategizing with your particular army.
