 I was just a user getting used to the site when they pulled out that policy. I left immediately and didn't return until a while later I read on another site that they reversed that policy. I can't IMAGINE how that idea made it thru meetings without a whole lot of "Dude this is a really bad idea!" "
It wasn't just Gamespot, I remember IGN incorporating some pretty ridiculous ideas in order to get us to pay. I seem to recall an E3 way back in the day where I couldn't check out any new trailers or images of games being announced. I had to wait a few days and then it'll be open to the public.
Of course, the IGN Insiders just bloated forum topics with all the need-to-know stuff, so it wasn't THAT big a deal. But yeesh, some of these tactics were flat out embarrassing.

I can't speak for the book obviously, but the movie is a classic. I guess it's usually better to read the book first and then watch the movie, but you really can't go wrong by just watching the movie right off the bat.
