Lastly even though we often hear of the death of the PC and the rise of tablets or PC alternatives many of us still need a real computer for work, school or other non-gaming hobbies. Consoles may be cheap but I can't administrate servers or write a term paper on one so being able to do those things on my gaming machine means another savings in the long run versus having to have another separate device.
This. I love tablets and phones for screwing around on Facebook, short term reading, and playing shallow games but that's about it. But even trying to do something as mundane as paying a bill on a phone or tablet feels like I'm trying type with mittens on. PCs have become less necessary for the most idle of tasks only. The rise of phones and tablets over PCs says a lot more about what people were doing with PCs in the first place than it says about the relative usefulness of phones and tablets.
If you think you might be into historical fiction, I'm reading Julian by Gore Vidal right now. So far I'm really enjoying it. It's about the life and times of the last pagan emperor of the Roman empire, Julian.
I think many people are upset that it's this early in the generation and the systems are so weak that they are already appear to be tapped out. MS is continuing to pay the price for forcing the constraint of a Kinect in the box on the general gaming public. But I don't own a PS4 or a XBO so I can only speculate.
Resolution is one thing, but the fps situation is very disappointing. 60 just flat out looks so much smoother when you are used to it.
@humanity: Easy Allies is a terrible name for a number of reasons.
I assume the benefit of using Patreon means that they don't have to do the heavy money/subscription lifting. Unlike the subscription model here, everything is handled at Patreons end and these guys will just be given a lump payment periodically. It's the quickest route to starting up from nothing. Get a Patreon, get a Youtube channel, go. They might not be skilled enough to set up a subscription method and don't want to pay for or hire a full time engineer to work on it if there's problems. If there's every a problem, they just call up Patreon and yell at them to fix it, because that's part of what they're paying Patreon a cut for.
And yeah, 7 dudes living off one Patreon sounds like it won't go that far. A goal of $15k between the 7 of them, when you take away Patreons cut and then however the hell taxes work with this stuff means probably about $1400-1600pp/pm. I sure as hell hope these guys are in SF like every other studio ever.
Surely they could round that out with some traditional advertising?
@giantlizardking: I completely agree, but my point still stands as you can't play a game that came out later on in console cycle with an unit bought on day 1 with out paying for some kind of upgrade..
A better example may be the Gameboy to Gameboy colour, or the 3DS and the 'New' 3DS.
Gameboy color is a separate system that is totally backwards compatible. Really so is the New 3DS, although I have no idea how that will turn out by the end. Maybe just with a handful of exclusives. What Sony and MS are attempting to do could end up being very different. More like an iPhone approach. We'll see how that goes for them. If I had to guess I would say "not well".
