I've tried using the PS4 as a general media browser, but unfortunately it's not very good at that.
As Gaff suggested, a chrome cast is pretty useful and easy to use. Also fun that a bunch of friends can just send stupid youtubes directly to the TV.
The cheapest solution is probably to get a raspberry pi and turn this into a media box with OpenElec. There's a GiantBomb plugin which runs great in that, and you can also use it for other media.
For me, I wanted my media box to properly support surround sound and 4K, so as an experiment I got a cheap android media box from China. So far that works surprisingly great!
8-4 Play. From the 8-4 game localization company in Japan. Mostly about Japanese video games and sometimes interesting stuff about life of "foreigners" in Japan.
Player One Podcast. Technically mostly about games, but usually just entertaining to listen to a bunch of older gamers ramble on.
Answer Me This! British comedy podcast where they answer bullshit questions. Very humerous and nice production values.
No Such Thing As A Fish. Do you like QI? Well, this is the podcast by the QI Elves who research the quite interesting facts for the TV Show.
Good Job Brain. Entertaining trivia podcast with a lot of humor. Hard to hate.
DGRadio. Was a great podcast about a bunch of interesting stuff (music, beer, cigars, movies, games) by some quite funny and rude dudes. Ended when one of the hosts died during his sleep at a young age (same fucking year as Ryan too, I think).
Building yourself is always a lot cheaper, and really not that difficult (though I can understand that it seems pretty daunting). Just make sure to have a tech savvy friend or a forum thread check your list of components before you buy it to make sure you didn't get something incompatible (and don't worry about the people who nitpick the minor stuff).
If you still really don't want to, a lot of hardware shops have the option to put it together for you. In my personal opinion I'd still take that over the fancy looking prebuild packages. It just reeks of them selling the sizzle of the sausage.
I think it was a terrible year for games from my perspective. Most years I can easily sum up a top 10 of personal GOTY's which blew my mind, but this year?
South Park (though gameplay wasn't great, charm made it up)
Divinity Original Sin (though interested faded halfway)
JazzPunk
Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments
GTA 5 (though it's just GTA again and I enjoyed Sleeping Dogs a lot more, even this year)
???
There are some games which might've been in my list, like D4 (not going to buy an xbox), but for the rest I've been mostly playing games from other years (for those that like proper adventure games, I can highly recommend Memoria). And honestly, even the people in this thread who feel it's not a disappointing year are mostly listing re-releases of older games too...
I'm no expert, but the people I trust to be experts always recommended to me to get a custom CPU cooler. They're very cheap anyways, so it's always been an easy choice for me. Also, have fun installing the CPU. Building a PC isn't too hard, but installing that CPU never stops being terrifying (never actually went wrong, but it felt that way..).
I'll let the American based users comment on whether there is a better store for you pricing-wise.
I don't think your addons should be an issue here, since that's clientside. I was hoping the error screens were giving you somewhat more information, but yeah it really is just a custom HTTP 500 screen.
I'd love to help you, but this requires actual knowledge of the system they implemented. I see you made a thread in the Bug Report forum, so good luck with that. Giant Bomb on XBMC is pretty sweet after all.
