Best of 2012

  • PC Game of the Year.

Pure. Classic. One million mouse clicks and eight months later, I am still playing this game. Having been an on-again-off-again fan of Blizzard properties (Blackthorne, WoW) I decided to jump into this much-lauded series on a whim and I have not been disappointed. Great art design, sound, addictive gameplay and so much sweet, sweet loot.

  • RPG of the Year

  • Biggest Surprise

Sleeping Dogs has no right to be as good as it is. To be honest, I'd written off the True Crime series after the first half of the first game. Guess it's a good thing this only started life as a TC sequel and after development and publishing hell, presented itself as its own game.

Loved the melee combat, graphics, and great voice-acting. Open-world games are always susceptible to levels of jank and less-than-great controls, but Sleeping Dogs was a joy to play and was very technically sound.

More guns, more drama, more Chinese!

  • Best Control.

  • Most Original Game.

  • Best Revival/"Coolest" Game

  • Best Console Exclusive

  • Best Fighting Game of 2012.

  • Best Shooter

  • College Try of the Year.

  • Best "Experience"/ Best Arcade Game of the Year.

  • Best Story

One of only two games ever to make me actually cry.

I need more. Give me more.

  • Most "Meh" Game of the Year (A)

I refuse to bash Max Payne or Ghost Recon, as I've had too much fun with both series over the years. I will say, however, that the reasons these two games are tied for such a...less than stellar honor, are a combination of high marks set by their predecessors, significant changes to the gameplay, and longer than necessary development cycles and delays that only built up my expectations to levels that could not be met. Both Max Payne 3 and GR: Future Soldier were both solid, well-made games that just fell short of satisfying me.

  • Funniest Game

This also could've won "Best Surprise" or "Most WTF" game of the year. I don't want to ruin any of the awesome jokes and surprises in this game, but I highly recommend it and I hope to see more from TwinBeard.

  • Best Soundtrack.

Loved the style, the violence and the music, dear God, the music. Haven't heard a soundtrack fit a game more perfectly this year with the exception of Mass Effect 3 and Frog Fractions.

  • Most Badass "I Did That!!!" Game of the Year

    Deus Ex + BioShock + Assassin's Creed + Thief + Awesome = Dishonored

  • Most Disappointing/ Weakest Game of 2012.

Keep in mind that I was not deterred by the QTE play style and was really looking forward to the cinematic feast that is Asura's Wrath. This game loses major points for BORING, repetitve gameplay, an inexplicably shitty Final Boss battle and the fact that the real ending was locked behind DLC. Inexcusable.
