Minecraft developer Mojang Studios is taking a strongly-held position against NFTs. In a blog post entitled "Minecraft and NFTs," the studio, which is owned by Microsoft, wrote that "integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are generally not something we will accept or support."
"To ensure that Minecraft players have a secure and enjoyable experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our client and server applications, nor can Minecraft in-game content such as worlds, skins, persona items, or any other mods, be utilized by blockchain technology to create a rare digital asset," Mojang said.
Mojang claims that some companies have created "NFT Implementations that are associated with Minecraft World Files and Skin Packs." This suggests that Minecraft players could potentially earn NFTs through playing on a server or by earning NFTs outside of Minecraft.
Mojang believes that these practices create digital scarcity and exclude, which goes against the principles of Minecraft. The studio has stated that NFTs "are not inclusive of all communities and create a scenario that has-nots and have-nots are a part of the same." Mojang also says that NFTs their speculative nature "encourages profiteering."
I strongly recommend that you go through the blog post in full because it concisely spells out many critiques of NFTs and blockchain projects in a way that's easy to understand. (There are many more quotes I could include.
Valve has also taken a strong stand against NFTs and blockchain-based games on Steam. A majority of the gaming community has opposed NFTs. Ubisoft stopped making NFTs to Ghost Recon Breakpoint only a few months after the initiative launched. Epic Games said last year that it is "open" to blockchain-based games available on the Epic Games Store, and the first blockchain game made it to the store in June.
Mojang does not completely exclude the possibility of incorporating blockchain technology into the near future. However, it says that "we are not planning to incorporate blockchain technology into Minecraft currently."
