By the way just so nobody freaks out when it happens:

I'll be shuffling the seeds before the tournament starts next weekend so whatever matchup shows up for you in the current challonge bracket is probably not what you'll be starting with.

I would recommend making use of an online lobby during the organization of this tournament. That was used during an earlier tournament, and it made things a whole lot faster, with players being able to meet each other and play out their matches with ease. Far easier and more efficient than relying exclusively on player lobbies and having to send out invites. Matches wouldn't be able to be streamed by a third-party that way, but finding an isolated lobby that no one is in and making it the "Giant Bomb Tournament" lobby would be the best way to do things for matches that didn't need to be streamed.

Also, what's the verdict on Margaret's use in this tournament? She'll be available for players who own the Japanese version of the game when the tourney starts, but NA version owners won't have access to her until after the tournament is over.

Don't know if there's a good answer on Margaret, but let's go with "characters not available in NA version are not tournament legal" on account of this being a NA launch tournament.

Reminder to entrants - The tournament is coming up in about a week and a half now. If you're still interested and haven't entered at challonge yet please find the link for that in the OP and do so. If you're not going to make it also please let me know so I can update things accordingly.

Hey again,

Updated the OP with prize info, and some minor rules/schedule stuff. I'm adding a 2DS to the prize pool :)

How will this tournament handle Shadow characters? Will they be seen as entirely separate characters—fitting the already established rule—or will they be a more complicated case such as SFxT or Divekick gem switching?

I'm going with shadow characters counting as a character selection. Updated rules.

Hey guys just a quick schedule update.

The tournament will run starting Saturday October 4th and finishing Sunday October 5th. At this point I think we have enough people that running it on one day would rush things and this is the format we used most often in the past.

Stay tuned for more specific information about the start time, round duration, etc.

Hey folks. Updated the OP.

I added an "import" guide for getting the game from JP PSN for people who want to play now and don't mind Japanese + spending more money :)

Also brought the player listing up to date.

More updates to come on scheduling, prizes, and streams.

Cheers.

I've got some Humble Bundle keys I'd be willing to donate as prizes if you guys are still looking to expand the prize pool.

Prizes are always welcome, just let me know what you want to give away and if you're doing raffle distribution or targeting a specific place (1st, 2nd, etc.)

Hi everyone.

Back when Persona 4 Arena came out we had a fun and surprisingly popular community online tournament. I and the rest of the crew that's been camping out in IRC ever since thought it would be fun to revive the tradition for the North American release of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.

So with out ado here are the details.

When:

The weekend of October 4th-5th. Current the tournament is scheduled to start at 1pm PST on Saturday and run through Sunday. Tentative round times are here.

Where:

On PSN. Please join #gb_ultimax on quakenet IRC to coordinate matches and hang out.

If you want to chat or organize practice games before October 4th head on over to #gb_p4a on quakenet.

Webchat link: http://webchat.quakenet.org/

Rules:

  • The tournament will be a double elimination bracket, so players will need to lose a match twice to be eliminated.
  • Matches will be best 2 out of 3 rounds for 99 seconds each round. Winner will be best 2 out of 3 matches.
  • The final match (top 2) will be 3 out of 5 matches (both before and after a bracket reset).
  • A player that loses a match is allowed to switch characters, however a player who wins must choose the same character as his previous match.
  • If a player drops during a round, it is up to the opponent to decide if he agrees to do a rematch or not.
  • Saving a replay of your matches is recommended in case of disputes (this has not happened in a GB tournament to date, but better safe than sorry).
  • Failure to be available for your matches in a timely manner may lead to disqualification so please be punctual.
  • Shadow characters count as a character for the purposes of character lock in.
  • Characters not available in the North American version of the game at the time of the tournament are not allowed. (Margaret seems to be the only one that would fall under this)
  • This will not be enforced, but please do not skip the stage/character introductions for tournament matches. Allowing them to take place gives the netcode time to adjust to the player connection. This is particularly useful when players have 0-1 bars with each other.

How to sign up:

Post your PSN id in this thread.

The actual tournament brackets will be run at Challonge so please sign up there too signup link (note the date/time listed for the tournament is subject to change)

Archives are here.

PSN Import Instructions (NA version is out now you can probably ignore this):

The instructions here are for JP PSN, but it's also available on the HK store if that's your thing.

  1. Make a JP PSN account - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixI8qGVyMIM
  2. Get some Yens! Assuming you don't have a JP credit card you'll need a JP PSN points card. You're in luck - you can buy codes digitally from PlayAsia or another of other online import retailers. The digital version is 6800 Yen if I recall correctly so make sure you have enough before hand.
  3. Got your account and code? Switch to your JP account, log into PSN and boot up the Playstation store.
  4. I'm not going to put super complete menuing instructions here, but it's easy enough to play things by ear...
  5. The bottom, or second from bottom (forget which) list item is for code entry so put in your Yen card code(s) in there. If all goes well you'll see the amount of Yen in your PSN wallet increase.
  6. Find Ultimax in the store and buy it with your Yen! You can either search for it by putting the characters "ペルソナ4" Into search or just navigate your way around the store until you find the game download.
  7. Once you have the game bought and downloaded you switch back to your normal PS3/PSN account and run it that way. Have fun!
  8. DLC characters: Alas, they ain't free if you buy the game with this method. They'll run you 800 yen a pop. You can buy them using the methods described above or you can launch the store through Ultimax itself in the PSN menu section.

Personas Behind the Madness:

FluxWaveZ: This evil mastermind is the brains behind the original giant bomb community P4A tournaments and a mean competitor to boot. His true motives are as shadowy as his Labrys.

gravitypenguin: If real life fighting game tournaments were wrestling he'd be a jobber. However, his losses haven't weakened his determination. Perhaps he can turn his luck around in this devious tournament of his own making.

The quakenet GB_P4A crew: Eternally lurking in the shadows of IRC and twitter. As the celestial event known only as "the ultimax" draws near they have returned to claim dominance in the arena.
