PS4 Reveal Thoughts

More than anything, I came away with the impression that this was a tacit acknowledgement by Sony of how badly they messed things up with the PS3. The emphasis on releasing hardware with a standard PC configuration was an admission that the Cell/Split-RAM architecture resulted in PS3 receiving ports instead of being the lead SKU as they now have unified RAM and standard architecture.

The Kinect-clone is an admission that copying Wii with Move was a disaster, so after ridiculing Kinect they are now fully embracing it.

An entire segment focused on fast access to games was acknowledgement of the ludicrous mandatory installs/game patches/system updates often requiring over an hour before being able to play a new PS3 game.

The emphasis with online and social integration from the start is acknowledgement that they are still playing catch-up with Live as they failed to understand the importance these things would play with the current gen era.

The good news is that Sony seems to have learned some lessons from this generation's mistakes. The bad news is that they are once again releasing a system with vague, empty promises rather than having the key features available at launch. Because of the vastly different architecture backwards compatibility was not an option with PS4, so they had to buy Gaikai to stream these games but no cost structure was hinted at and the release time-frame of that feature was a nebulous "eventually". Some of us recall that cross-game party-chat was also promised "eventually" before they finally admitted that was a lie and they could never do so with PS3.

I bought PS3 a month after it launched and learned my lesson. I'll wait a year to see how things shape up with PS4 before jumping in.
