Bayonetta 2 is probably the best game in this entire genre. So that puts it ahead for me.

Although the first Devil May Cry was pretty damn good too (So that should've been a 3rd option)

Even though it's one of my favourite games, I think FF9 might have the worst combat in the series. Too slow and the skill mechanics are ridiculously simplistic.

As a demo I found it frankly irredeemable :-)

The planets will be open world? Otherwise all the mass effects were "open world", in the sense you could go anywhere at any time in the universe. The planets were all level based though.

Which Mass Effects were you playing exactly? You couldn't do this in ME3 at all. The only "open world" part of that game was the citadel.

One thing that surprises me about the Final Fantasy series is how long it took them make a fully polygonal main entry in the series after FFVII. For the longest time I thought X was the first fully polygonal game, but actually it just has backgrounds that don't look horrible. It turns out that XI is the first mainline game released that is fully polygonal (XI first release: May 2002 in Japan on the PS2, X-2 in March 2003), which is strange to me.

Most of the backgrounds in 10 are polygonal. They do have a few pre-rendered ones snuck in there. But the majority are 3D. It's less impressive because there's no camera control, like in 12.

They did a great job of making it feel like the same Skyrim by hardly improving the graphics as well.

Not if you were a completionist you wouldn't. How many times do you need to do that in Novigrad throughout the whole game? About 1000 times?

It might be ok if it were just 5 different quests but that time adds up.

Just too much of a nightmare without them. Imagine running round Novigrad in Witcher 3 trying to find an individual person based on written directions. It would just slow the whole game down so much.

Chrono Cross is very different but absolutely worth playing. I probably prefer it slightly more than Trigger. Maybe.......

Or maybe I just love pre-rendered backgrounds?

1080p 60fps is desirable. Doubt we'll ever see that consistently though given how many new graphical techniques they're desperate to pile onto things.
