I've played the initial quest, done some free wandering, and just finished the Strike mission, all with the same class (Hunter). All told, I've played maybe 5-6 hours, with probably 2/3 of that being the Strike mission. I really, really like what I've played so far.
Warning: frank discussion of the Strike mission follows so, Spoilers I guess.
If you've watched the Unfinished video, you've seen the first third or so of the Strike mission. You have those three waves to survive and they can get tough. My team was pretty well leveled (6, 6, and 4) and I think one of the other duders had played before, because he knew where to go for some loot chests that were off the critical path. I think we team wiped 3 or 4 times and had to restart that section each time. We made it through, and got to the real bitch of the mission: a huge tank called a devil walker. I don't know how to describe it, except that it's a massive fucking bullet sponge with a cannon that can kill you instantly via splash damage. Enemies spawn into the area occasionally, but killing the captains gets damn hard as we were all constantly low on ammo. I think I only ran out once, but it was a struggle. After the fifth or sixth time we team wiped on this, having to start the whole section over again, a kind of funny thing happened. We spawned in a relatively safe area. I was frustrated and considering bailing, so I sat down. One of the other members of the fire team did too. Then the third started dancing. So the two of us who sat down started dancing. All told,we spent maybe 5-7 minutes dancing, sitting, pointing, and waving. Finally, one dude headed out into the combat area...and we took the fucker down. It took a long time and was supremely frustrating, but rewarding. There was a final boss that was also a little spongey, but a better balanced variety of fodder enemies spawned in at different stages to provide ammo drops. We only wiped once, and probably wouldn't have if we hadn't tried to retreat a bit. Bingie's done a pretty smart thing by making the final arena open...but putting hard as hell enemies outside the door you came through to STRONGLY discourage you from retreating or just trying to snipe from door cover.
While I did have some problems with that Devil Walker encounter's balance, I still think this "alpha" has been a great experience. I"m torn between trying the other classes out and waiting for the beta at the end of July or just the full release. Either way, I'm pretty excited for this.
