My thoughts on the Battlefield V open beta

I played for around 12 hours and still intend to play more the last two days of the beta. I'm really impressed by how much I liked the shooting and movement.

Positives:

I loved how the guns feel, I think it might be the best shooting in a battlefield game ever, the damaged is well balanced as well. The game is really smooth, I was impressed by how well my PC performed on it despite not being really new, I have a GTX 950 and it always felt it was more then enough while playing the game, really polished visuals. The lighting in the game is amazing, it looks amazing, as it always was, but BF1 was a bit more dark, so this feels really pretty looking for a technical graphics display.

I really liked both of the maps that were on the Beta, both felt balanced, no map too big or too clunky. Both had areas with more open combat and areas with a more close to mid range focus. I felt like I could play any weapon and be useful. Also the fact that it had less vehicles then past battlefield matches, as far as I remember, and that's a plus for me.

They bring a very creative idea of limiting a bit of the supplies for the player, not having that much ammo and items, with a slow health regen. But each control point has two stacks of crates, one for you to restock ammo and/or grenades and one for you to heal yourself, what increases the importance of who is controling that point, not only for the match points, but also sustain the pressure.

Negatives:

(Most of it is just ok for being in a Beta stage): Bugs like getting stuck between the boats and the wall in the map with a water section. Two times someone tried to revive me exactly when the bleed out timer ended, and then the revive animation still happened, but I still died, when went to the spawn point of view without being able to select anything, had to quit both times. A few times the servers went down or simply switched me to another match in the middle of action. In the first couple of days it had a lot of team unbalance, matches with 64 players being 50 vs 14, becoming completely unplayable on the sense of having fun.

I really didn't like that the bleed out timer doesn't change how much you have to wait to spawn after, if nobody revives you. But after a few more hours I started to accepting it, and trying to understand why it's like that.

How do you feel about the visibility of other players? I've heard it's difficult to see what you're shooting from time to time. What platform were you playing on?

@rorie: I only have problems with that when I'm out on the sun and trying to see people under the bridge/railway, on the shadow, at one of the two maps. But outside of that I was kind of surprised in a positive way on how it was smooth to swing the camera around and being able to catch enemies movement on the field of vision. I'm playing only on PC.

I played the xbox one version and I only played 1 conquest match, then deleted it from my hard drive.

It looks and feels like BF1 set in WWII. And at this point in my life i really have no interest in another WWI or WWII game. It really just looks and feels like they reskinned BF1 for this new game. Even the player models look a lot like they did in BF1.

I'm kinda glad I'm over BF games, thats one less game to worry about buying in the crowded fall season.

@darkjohnny477: the last BF I bought was BF4, and that was kind of disappointing (played the others later with Origin Access). So I'm already off on the series for a couple of years. I agree with your point, it's BF1 with better guns, I would say that's enough for me when it comes to how it feels. And I still rather play WWI or WWII games then the Infinite Warfare style of shooters. But considering we are in 2018, I'm in the minority for sure. Wasn't expecting much from it, I don't think I gonna buy it, but it was a positive surprise for me.

I thought it felt kinda chunky at first, but the more I play the more fantastic i think it is. Didn't have any problems spotting enemies, but you do really need to equip a scope I think. The destruction feels good as always, the sniping brutal, and for the first time I actually enjoy playing assault. My usual go-to is support, but I think they made the bipod feel bad. I get that a bipod doesnt latch you to the ground in real life, but I just really miss the "snap" of going prone tapping LT and gaining that accuracy. Great game.

@gtb08: Yes, playing assault was the biggest upgrade in my opinion. Was the class I played the most so far.

Assault was improved but Medic, now that anyone can revive anyone has become just an SMG class? Maybe I'm missing some depth, I also havent done any building as support, but I loved grabbing that syringe and diving through the fight to rezz my team.

@gtb08: A Medic can revive faster, can toss out med pouches to teammates, you have access to the grenade launcher, and medical station that heals those around it.

@gtb08: Giving out pouches to teammates is a life saver. Not having a medic on your squad is a big handicap from my experience.

Most footage I have seen makes it look like vehicles have been completely de-emphasized and the focus is on small arms now. Am I correct or have I just misjudged what I saw?

Yeah my feelings is that it's more battlefield with different weapons and slightly prettier graphics, played for about an hour and uninstalled.

Honestly I don't have patience for competitive shooters anymore, feels like I'm up against people with superhuman reflexes, no fun to be constantly dying.

it ran pretty well with everything on high and some things on ultra though, in my quasi ancient system, i7 4790k, gtx 980

@splodge: Yes, but it changes from map to map. The beta has only two maps so its hard to say if it's for the whole game. But I would love to be de-emphasized overall.

Vehicles having limited ammo is kinda weird to get used to but not unexpected after so many matches in BF1 had a guy go 75/0 just by sitting in a light tank on the edge of the map.

And on the reviving point: everyone can revive their own squadmates but medics can revive anyone on the team.

The one annoying holdover from BF 1 is the HDR bloom effect, when I'm outside I find it difficult to see inside of a building and when your inside they over expose the outside too much.

This is the first Battlefield I'm playing on PC since, gosh probably Battlefield 2 (which was an amazing game) and my opinions on V are a bit muted.

It basically feels like Battlefield I guess.

On PC the game looks really great with the exception of some weirdly jaggy looking textures here and there. Shooting feels as I remember it feeling - kinda floaty unless you get a headshot. I played a few games as Recon and getting a headshot is quite satisfying. The movement, not sure what they did with it, but it looks interesting the way characters kinda weave and dodge as they run, brace themselves against walls and small flourishes like that. Not much to say really, gameplay felt fine, the squad spawning mechanic continues to be a good idea for getting people into games faster. Starter weapons felt flimsy and inaccurate which I guess is the point. For a Battlefield game I honestly didn't see any destruction, on PC at that, which is weird. A tank shot a small little hut I was in and it killed me and blew out the windows but thats it.

It's another one of these. Not a fan of old school weapons myself, and would be really curious to see a Battlefield game in like the Infinite Warfare setting - how amazing would it be if you had a map where you could get into a jet on the ground and fly up into space to take a point in a station with dogfights happening on the outside while another whole battle was happening on the planet surface below? But from what I gather most Battlefield fans enjoy the more realistic warfare so I'm probably just an outlier on this one.

EDIT: Oh and I realize this has been the trend for a while now, but these Metro-ass looking menus, on PC especially, are really weird. Huge boxes and buttons that take up your entire screen..

I recently watched a video by AngryJoeShow and before I say anything I just want to disclaim that I do not follow him, I do not personally agree with him at all most of the time and most of all, I find his personality to be a bit abrasive and unpleasant BUT even past all this I was desperate to find someone who has parallel views on this game as I do and what do you know, I agreed with him on almost everything... The ui, the personalization, the progression, the menus, the lack of content... almost everything surrounding the actual gameplay just didn't make me feel this 'Battlefield'. Not to portray an angry forum dweller pitchfork army but... I actually canceled my pre order after this beta.

Lack of content? for the Beta?

@zombie2011: When I say lack of content, I am attributing that to what the trailers have shown, what the beta teases, and confirmed launch content by various devs.

@moderp: It's weird, I agree with you about about feeling down on everything besides the gameplay but I didn't expect the gameplay to be this enjoyable and and fun going in.

My plan was to not buy this game at all but now I'm kind of curious about it and how it will release and what the reviews will be like, I might even pick it up on a sale later on.

Something about the combat makes it feel a lot more like a war compared to the last one I played (BF4). Maybe it's the smaller magazine sizes or the more emphasis on the infantry, but it feels a lot more tense but not stressful like BF4 did to me.

That was something they did really well in BF1. Everything just felt like you were "in the shit" like the way mud stuck to everything, the de-emphasis on large scale threats (like huge tanks and helicopters etc.), the introduction of things like gas grenades and flamethrowers coupled with great claustrophobic level design. I didn't love everything about the game but It just felt gritty and immersive in a way most multiplayer games don't and it was a good idea to expand on it in this new one.

So far it isn't hitting the same heights for me but maybe it'll get there in the full release.

I've been a fan of Battlefield since Codename Eagle, and I've bought every game released on PC apart from Hardline. I loved every one of them and played 'em to death up until 4. BF4 to me was just more of 3 (which could have been fine) but they managed to kill the joy somehow and it only got worse in BF1. I think it was a combination of trying to be CoD with too much focus on tight infantry combat (and no team play) and messing up the unlock progression.

With this beta I got a bit of the old feeling back. It looks and sounds amazing of course, but I really like the mechanical changes they've made to try and promote team play and a value for each class; Limiting your starting ammo so you need resupply from a support. Forcing you to wait for respawn so medics have a chance to revive and not lose tickets. Scouts being the only ones that can really spot the enemy.

I'm still not in love with the progression, but unless it's a complete mess at launch I will probably get this on day one because the gameplay just felt that good to me.

They made a darn good point, I've felt this way since Hardline removed tons of vehicles and features and content, and then right after that was the Fischer Price Battlefront 1, BF1, Battlefront 2 etc...

I ultimately liked BF1 a lot, but the lack of content was almost understandable there because it was WW1. I understood being more conservative on the amount of weapons you got etc. But this is WW2. This should be the biggest baddest coolest BF yet. It should be what 4 tried to be. The ultimate and best BF experience for everyone, right now. The beta appears to confirm the trend of less and less STUFF however...

This is gonna be the first BF game I don't buy since they first started selling them on the original Xbox. Just a completely boring beta and DICE has been shit since BF4(which was a broken mess at launch but at least a great game at its core) so this was pretty much the last straw for me.

Also, whoever works on the UI for BFV games should never be allowed to work on another game again.

So I pretty much hate the BFV beta the most damning thing I can say is its tedious and boring.

After the novelty of spawning with limited ammo and health wears off it just means I only spawn at flags to stock up before hand or after doing well I either have to track back to resupply or pickup someone's kit it feels pointless. And having to hold up on the d-pad to heal doesn't feel great neither is spamming it to give out ammo / health it just feels clunky.

The UI in Battlefield has never been stellar but its defiantly the worst its ever been the guns having straight up passive upgrades is a terrible idea and having them located in a separate menu only accessible outside the game is bonkers. And dying in BFV seems to be a massive troll situation either hold R2 for eternity and watch dozens of folks obliviously walk past or sprint over to a team mate who just died and have them bleed out and skip the revive.

The TTK is not an issue when the map has alot of movement and map flow between flags but if players elect to camp and fortify you can easily suffer alot of insta deaths from folks you can't see soldier visibility can really suck.

BFV sounds really quite now BF1 was way over the top constantly sounding like the world was exploding but you could always tell where the action was without spotting unless a flag being taken its often hard tell where the enemy is or more importantly isn't.

After spending time with the beta a decent amount of textures and buildings are from BF1 it creates and odd sense that I've played the game before.

I just can't wait for the series to go back to modern or future warfare with helicopters that you actually need to climb into. Fairness be damned: it's fun to jack vehicles and goof around with a bunch of people on board a helicopter.

So I don't see a lot of comments on the upgrade system for the weapons...faster bullets!!! And you have to use in game currency to purchase them and I just don't know if that currency going be sold as a quicker route to upgrade your guns and have an upper hand... I know I might be jumping the gun here but, Battlefront II made me very sceptical about DICE games.

On a positive note: shooting feels great, really punchy, feels like there is less sway which for me is awesome but, can understand that hardened Battlefield players may feel this is dumbing down the gameplay. You can tell they are trying to get it more appeal from the casual, dare I say it, COD audience.

The revive mechanic is pointless, nobody revives, it does not count as part of your respawn timer and it better to just let yourself die and respawn - frustrating addition and I have a feeling it will be scaled back in the full release.

I have a feeling that the Norway operation was not a full mission as the commentator says about falling back to the mountains on day 3... which gives me pause because, on one hand, 90 min operation matches are just too long and I just thought it was overkill if I just want to jump on and play (I appreciate the scale and work put in but, for the non-committed and casual players, that's just too long). The 2 day quick operations was actually pretty awesome, still was immersive and I was happy to play it multiple times.

Played a round of Conquest and that feels like Conquest.

Now for the controversial stuff - what the hell was DICE thinking with the initial trailer!? It is completely not, in any way, represented like that in the game - and I mean the 'historical accuracy' issue (do not want to get into a debate here - I think it's stupid). The game is a normal WWII game, no weird steam punk prosthetics, etc. People got triggered for no reason. But... why do you ban 'white people' and 'DLC' from the chat?! That's just dumb, you are asking yourself for new controversy. I Don't get DICE nowadays, there is nothing controversial about the game itself.

Overall - I am interested in it but, will not buy at full price, will most likely get it on EA Access (B1 was available pretty quick after release) or get it on sale.
