We got a several great turn-based tactical games this year. It's been quite the renaissance for what is normally a niche genre. I really enjoyed the return-to-roots that Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia brought to the franchise. It was a wonderful breath of fresh air after the disappointing mess Fire Emblem Fates turned out to be. Hopefully they continue the Echoes branding to remake all the Japan-locked games in the franchise.

This new Xcom 2: War of the Chosen expansion is pretty good. They added a ton of new stuff to the base campaign, and while it can be overwhelming and a bit of a slog at times, it's still a blast.

Mario + Rabbids was a totally unexpected surprise reveal, I can't wait to play that later on when I have access to a Switch. Seeing future non-Nintendo takes on Nintendo IP is going to be real exciting.

Finally, we have Divinity: Original Sin II, which despite the silly name, is looking to be a great followup to the original Kickstarter hit. Larian seem to be pouring all the budget they can into making the best game possible first time out this time. It's going to be nice to see what they can do with the better production values right out of the gate.

I'm kinda annoyed that JJ has got his hands in everything scifi on the big screen these days. I wasn't terribly happy with the execution of the Star Trek reboot movies, and if he puts his touches on Star Wars it's just going to make things more homogeneous. I don't hate JJ's work, but it there's a time and a place for it. To be honest, Star Wars would've been a better fit for the action blockbuster style than Trek.

Also, Force Awakens bored me to tears. It was a shallow remake of A New Hope and I really want them to start doing something different, something new, and lay off the gratuitous fanservice already. I'm cautiously optimistic about The Last Jedi from the trailers (more so than Star Trek Discovery, at least).

Here in the American South our tea is sweet, black, and cold. Personally, I hate it. Most restaurants make sweet tea with simple syrup instead of sugar, which has the benefit of being able to sweeten while it's cold. Some tend to overdo it, and I've seen my tea drinking friends go half sweet, half unsweet to cut it down.

@dudeglove: @oursin_360: There is a third scenario that is not at all obvious. If you uncheck Integrate and disable the story missions (leaving all boxes blank during campaign start), then the Alien Rulers will free roam from the get go. You will never encounter a ruler and a chosen in the same mission, however. Sources linked in that thread.

@bdead: Yeah, this is one of the side effects with serotonin-affecting antidepressants. I've personal experience. If it bothers you enough, I'd recommend talking to your doctor about switching to another type of antidepressant, like Wellbutrin (an NDRI).

@marokai: I personally forgot about the similar figures in Shepard's vision.

It always made me wonder if the Protheans resembled the husks or the husks the Protheans. Husks were later revealed to be Reaper technology, and that begs the question when and why were the statues built, and if the resemblance was coincidental or intended as some kind of warning. That's probably my favorite thing about ME1, so much was open to interpretation and wonder. When they started closing off the threads in ME2 and 3, it never was as cool as your headcanon.

Alex plays through Mass Effect (w/ Vinny). Judging from the amount of copies he has received and how much of a joke it has become, it'll probably never happen.

I'd be super disappointed if they jumped cold into ME2, though. The first one is a lot better than people remember! Just focus early points into weapons & electronics (shields) skills, wear Hahne Kedar armor, prioritize damage & accuracy on weapons, and give everyone health regen & physics threshold armor mods. Build up your omnigel stocks early, when loot is still worthless. Poison and biotics bypass shields, so don't rely on them too much.

In reality, though, such a series would be far too much of a time commitment. They'd need a Solid Scanlon amount of hours to complete the trilogy, and it's doubtful that Alex would want to commit to that just to find out what the deal is with Mass effect.

...Keep in mind the guy comes from Northern Europe, the least ethnically diverse place on the planet. Would not surprise me at all if the SOB was a racist. That needs to be the story, not some bull about context not mattering...

I hope you realize the irony of what you just said. No, seriously. You just insinuated everyone from Northern Europe was a racist because they're all white. You racially profiled half a continent as skinhead white supremacists likely based on assumptions about their demographics and a few high-profile incidents.

Like, think whatever you want about Pewdiepie (personally, the guy sounds like a jerk), but the stereotyping you're doing is just as bad. It's not okay just because he's white.

@gundamguru: I wasn't aware there was debate on whether Bloodborne was a JRPG. I just assumed JRPG was an RPG developed in Japan.

While that is the literal meaning of the acronym, when people use the term JRPG they are referring to a specific style of game (like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, or Tales). As the last couple examples show, they aren't necessarily turn-based.

It's like when someone says CRPG (computer RPG) they don't mean every RPG playable on PC, but rather a title in the style of Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, etc.

Not to start this debate again, but Bloodborne isn't a JRPG. It's a Souls-like, and probably not something this guy's wife would enjoy based on this browser game.
