Game(s) of the Year: Two Thousand Eighteen Edition

The following is a list of some games I've been enjoying throughout 2018, not necessarily involving games released in 2018.

Honourable mention goes to

  • Chrome Tabs Without Internet Access -- I moved earlier this year and was without the internet for some time, I found myself playing that auto runner on new chrome tabs. I couldn't tell you what killed the dinosaurs, but I know I'm responsible for the death of at least a dozen or so digital dinos.

List items

  • I have so many games to finish and yet here in the latter stages of the year I find myself enthralled with this nearly 30 year old action/adventure game. The SNK 40th Anniversary Collection has kept my attention glued to my Switch for the last few days. Most of that time being spent exploring the world of toxic mazes, talking dolphins, and upbeat mountain tunes.

  • Tasty strawberries, but at what cost? Roughly 10 hours of my life spent dodging, zipping, and clinging to the walls of this tight indie platformer. A fantastic soundtrack and tons of hidden secrets are just of few of the reasons why Celeste keeps hopping around in my head.

  • There isn't much left to be said about Blizzard's 2016 hero based shooter that hasn't already been said. Constant balance updates, new characters, and map rotations are keeping the game feeling fresh and exciting.

  • Spin some blocks, stack some line clears, become Tetris. An amazing addition to a storied franchise, Tetris Effect pummels you with great tunes and BIG clears.

  • "Beat so fat, gonna make me drum" - Don-chan 2017

If you can get your hands on a drum controller then I believe you'll find yourself deeply engaged in a stylistic rhythm game from the folks over at Bandai Namco. Face your fears in an all stakes beat off with Heihachi Mishima or Hello Kitty. Battle your friends in head-to-head competition, or just jam out to LINDA LINDA by your lonesome for hours on end.

  • Spiders are mad as all hell and are coming to kick your ass. Spelunky is an interesting take on the ever popular idle game genre, as I spend a lot of time catching my breath after screaming because of a pug dying from being thrown into the maw of a monstrous spider.
