@qlanth: You could argue it the other way though and say Abby can't look at it from the perspective of a parent or someone who's lost a parent so she's never going to have that part of the story resonate with her. Abby raises a very valid point but i also thought Vinny was fair. He listened and asked her to explain the bits she said he didn't quite understand. What i don't think is very fair is to reply to someones point of view with "I don't fucking care"

@jadegl:I agree that it's a tired idea in games and film and usually isn't relevant after the opening act, and for me that's what was so refreshing. Also seeing the list of all the films you've mentioned really made me think how often it's used which i hadn't considered before.

It's sad that we still have to point out that it's fine to have opinions that are different to everyone else's and thought it would be nice in a sea of negativity to have a constructive discussion surrounding games and how they resonate with ourselves. I completely understand that people who haven't lost a parent might not really appreciate why this resonates with some people so deeply. The bit where Kratos leaves Atreus very nearly made me cry and i had to put the controller down for a while, because he'd already lost his mum, wasn't having a great time with his dad but at least he knew he was looking out for him only to lose that, albeit for a short period of time. Whereas after 40 hours of RDR2 i have no idea how that's going to end because so far i can't remember a single memorable story moment and feel distinctly like a wild west simulator as opposed to a progressive story.

@jadegl: For me I loved this point in GoW as it resonated very deeply with my own relationship with my dad and I can really relate to Atreus. I haven't seen all the films you're talking about, but for the majority this part of the story is revenge or the dead parent has been dead for years. Very few deal with the immediate aftermath of a dead parent or the reality of a parent who is woefully unequipped to deal with the situation and i think in this instance it was handled very well.

My only issue with Abby's comments is that to me she's ignored a huge aspect of the story because she was focusing too much on the bits she didn't like. But then that has always been my issue with GOTY, the argument between Jeff and Brad last year around BOTW and Nier really brought this to a head as they were arguing the same points (takes a while to get into, some the mechanics aren't amazing) and despite Brad saying "we're arguing the same points" Jeff's response to this "it's a bad game!"

My biggest issue with the GoW discussion is Brad having strong opinions about something he hasn't seen.

Can only talk of my own experience but I found Witcher 3 to be lacking anything interesting. Admittedly I think the world is its best strength but I didn't get the same sense of adventure I got in BOTW.

@nigeth: So in a nutshell, what you're saying is that Mario Maker shouldn't be their favourite game of the year because more people play their levels than yours or mine?

There's so much butthurt that Mario Maker is their number 1 when I'm frankly surprised that they/you didn't see it coming. They spent an hour the other day arguing about Fallout and have repeatedly and coherently explained why they didn't think the Witcher was all that great.
