Figure Fanaticism: MAI WAIFU Edition

In the past, I've posted around these parts on a couple of occasions regarding another one of my hobbies/obsessions outside of video games. (Though tangentially related.) I speak, of course, of figure collecting. I originally started collecting them back in college, though it wasn't really much of a collection in those days. Mostly, it was one or two figures I bought at a local hobby shop to spruce up my dorm room. It wasn't until some years later that I really started getting into it, and as more time has passed, the bug has just bitten harder. Here's what my collection more or less looked like a few years ago:

Tepig gets all the ladies.
Tepig gets all the ladies.

That's not the entire extent of my collection as it existed at the time (That's a tiny shelf, and I haven't exactly kept a well-maintained photographic archive), but yeah, not very big. Well, cut to a couple of years later, some bigger furniture, and...

Tepig, I think we really need to talk here.
Tepig, I think we really need to talk here.

And it's just gotten bigger. Anyway, I threw this blog together because I felt like sharing my most recent acquisitions. A Nendoroid mini-figure of the Vocaloid variant Haku Yowane:

My favorite variant character, by the way. (Poor girl. Low self-esteem and perpetual loser.)
My favorite variant character, by the way. (Poor girl. Low self-esteem and perpetual loser.)

Also, from Fire Emblem: Awakening, Tharja.

MAI WAIFU. (Thus, the blog title.)
MAI WAIFU. (Thus, the blog title.)

That's some seriously nice work, by the way. Perfectly balanced and doesn't even need to be fastened to the base. Oh, and a size comparison.

As if Haku didn't feel inferior enough already.
As if Haku didn't feel inferior enough already.

And finally a picture of the current state of my collection:

Oh, crap, that's a blurry one. (Goddamn it, Tepig!)
Oh, crap, that's a blurry one. (Goddamn it, Tepig!)

Yikes. Well, maybe a couple more close-ups will do.

Uh-oh. Another blurry one. I hope this isn't a sign of a hex. Guys, if I should meet a violent end, please do not disrespect the figure of the sullen stalker versed in black magics. Just, you know, fair warning and all that.

Welp. I'm not a professional photographer, and it shows. Let's try one more.

There we go. Safe and sound next to Yukiko.
There we go. Safe and sound next to Yukiko.

Anyone else here in to figure collecting? What sorts have you got? If there's a blurry one you want to see more of, I can definitely take more pictures (and try not to suck at holding steady focus).

The one in the middle (and the least likely for people to recognize) is the Star Wars Extended Universe character Jaina Solo, who was recently booted out of the canon by Lucasfilm.

Sorry, it had to be done to cleanse the taint of Kevin J. Anderson from canon.

Online shops to order from. These are sites I've used that have provided safe reliable service. Most of the time all the below sites will mark down the prices in order to save buyer import fees:

HLJ: Good for preordering new figures that are coming out, but they rarely have older figures in stock. They also get some great deals from time to time. Order with EMS to lessen chance of needing to pay import fees. Can preorder and pay 2 weeks before release. No upfront paying is required.

Nippon Yassan: Great for new preorders, but they often also have older figures in stock. Prices for older stuff can vary. Order with EMS for same reason as above, although they may mark down items to insure no import fees. You can also preorder in advance but not pay until 2 weeks before the figure is released. However you cannot cancel orders with them anymore, so make sure you want what you preorder. If you try to cancel or refuse to pay, they close your account.

Mandarake: Often get great deals on figures and they mark down prices to insure no import fees. Stock is determined by actual physical stores in Japan as opposed to some internet warehouse, so rare figures often get sold really quickly. Site is a bit more difficult to use since it's the English version of a Japanese focused site but should be no real problem.

Toys Logic: Based in the U.S so import fees are non existent for NA residence. However they also get new figures around 2 months later then Japanese based sites above.

BBTS is what I've gotten both my figures from, they have an extensive back catalogue of figures and as with Toys Logic they are based in the US so no import fees (unless you live in Canada >_>). The release dates are pretty bad though so it's not great for new figures (One figure came out January in Japan and will be released this month).

You guys made me realize that at some point in my life I'm going to have to invest in some anime figures. I watch way too much anime to not have anything. I would also mix in some video game figures that may or may not be super anime and Japanese.

I'd like to put a good word in for CDJapan. They specialize in music but I've ordered a some older manga, games, artbooks and a figure without a hitch. They also offer a proxy service and magazine subscriptions if that's your thing.

AmiAmi has the most competitive pre-order prices and they often get exclusive extras for figures and games. It's probably the most well-regarded site in the biz but I'm still waiting on pre-orders so I can't speak from experience. They also sell second-hand figures - something to be mindful of when browsing Mandarake.

@hailinel: Well, that Momohime figure is by far the most striking one I've seen so far. I didn't even like Muramasa that much, but as soon as I saw it I knew I needed to have it.

And yeah, that's a mini Crystal Skull Vodka.

@liquidprince: I bought things twice from Amiami and can easily vouch for them.

To be fair, Star Wars is loaded with some goofy names once you get beyond the core original trilogy cast. I mean, Jar Jar Binks and Jek Porkins alone make Jaina Solo sound like a perfectly reasonable name.

It's very striking, indeed! And I thought so. I never had the drink myself, but I just remember Alex and Rorie talking about it on the Screened podcast back in the day in reference to Dan Akroyd and his eccentricities.

I've always secretly wanted an action figure collection. Not of a bunch of sexy ladies, but still.

Although, I wouldn't be opposed to an animated series Harley Quinn figure though...

The only figures I have are an Assassin's Creed 2 Ezio I got of the collector's edition, a tiny norse warrior from Skyrim and a funko batman. It's a small but fun to display little set.

Seems like all it takes for me to buy a statue is to think it looks nice.

Also it being fairly cheap to obtain is usually a factor as well. Thanks to this thread I'm thinking about getting a Yukiko statue and the Mara Jade Bishoujo coming out this month.

This Malgus statue kinda counters my try to buy reasonable priced things though. Although it was a poor decision it does look nice towering over all my Star Wars minifigs.

I'm not a Tales fan, but I've enjoyed a lot of the character designs from the franchise, and I have to agree with that assessment. And I'm also impressed by the Malgus in all of that shiny black.

I've ordered stuff from Amiami as well. I don't like the layout of their site, as it's very convoluted, with sold out things often being shown next to stuff that is in stock. However their service is great, so I guess that's all that really matters.

@hailinel: As someone who's only seen a handful of series (G, 00, 08th MS team), build fighters was a lot of fun. It has a metric ton of cameos and references, it keeps a really nice brisk pace, and the characters are likeable. The sheer reverence for Gunpla is what got me to start building that model, actually.

This seems to be a common theme of the thread. I'm not sure if I should apologize or not. I won't!

But it is true that once you start collecting in earnest, it can be hard to stop.

What do you mean where? Like which stores? If so I posted a bunch of links to different online stores you can get figures earlier. They are called Nendoroids. So search Persona 4 Nendoroid.

Yeah, even the tanks in the show proper (not the chibi ones in the end credits) are highly detailed in comparison to the characters.

Here's a pic that gives a better sense of scale (it's pretty small). The top of the commander's head is just shy of the waist of a Max Factory Figma (Kirino to the left).

The most nerdy thing I have collected is Warhammer 40k models, which I painted just to display as I never really got into the game.
