Of the Week's Big News: Final Fantasy XIII and the 3DS

It's been a hell of a week for game news, given that it's mid-January.  You'd almost think that E3 was around the corner.  First the Final Fantasy bombshells, and then the release data on the 3DS.  And it's only Wednesday.  Who knows what craziest might get dropped by the the end of Friday.

Final Fantasy XIII-2

Posting this here because it's the only screen we've got.

Given what little has been said of the game officially, I really can't say too much other than I enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII, and I'm game for a direct sequel so long as they don't go off on some weird tangent like the crack-addled pop princess Charlie's Angels fever dream madness that wrecked Final Fantasy X-2.  Call me cautiously optimistic on that one.  I certainly don't think it's worth the hilarious outrage that sparked across the forums yesterday.  Calling a game an abomination based on what little footage was shown is just a tad bit absurd.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII

The trailer really does a lot to show off a game that's been such a mystery for so long.  It doesn't really surprise me that it would play like Kingdom Hearts; it is, after all, the main Kingdom Hearts team that's working on it.  It looks like a very different realm of Cocoon society than that inhabited by the main cast of Final Fantasy XIII.  Sort of like Final Fantasy by way of Kazuma Kiryu.  I'd really like to know the release date for it, but at this point who knows.

Final Fantasy Agit--er, Type-0

 WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?!
 WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?!
So apparently, Agito XIII is no more.  It's not even related to the FFXIII universe in any way.  They're attempting to build a new franchise out of a cell phone-turned PSP game that even less was ever known about than Versus.  To this, I can only shrug and display a facial expression indicating completely bafflement.

So really, all I learned about Final Fantasy XIII's various games this week is that I still really don't have much of a clue what the hell is going on.

The 3DS

The 3DS's North American release date has been announced.  I had already put down a preorder on the handheld, but it's good to know when I'll be able to pick it up.  It's better to know how much it'll actually cost.  And for the amount of tech that they're packing in, between the 3D, the accelerometer and gyroscope, the beefier graphics capability, better wireless, and everything else, I think it's a fair price.  I'm still trying to figure out which games would be the best to get for it first, however.  It's still not really clear what games are going to be released for it when.  That being said, I've managed to narrow down my most wanted list to the following:

Kid Icarus: Uprising

 Fuck you, asshole.
 Fuck you, asshole.
I haven't played a new Kid Icarus game since Of Myths and Monsters on the original Game Boy.  Technically, it was a more procient game than that the better remembered and more sadistically difficult NES original, but there was just something missing.  The generic stand-in villain Orcos just wasn't the same as Medusa.  But it'll be great to have another shot of the series after all these years.  Even if i do spend a good deal of time cursing the name of the Eggplant Wizard.

Samurai Warriors Chronicles

The Samurai Warriors games are my favorite branch of the Musou series, and I have yet to see any indication that Chronicles will let me down.  The first trailer for the game was promising simply for all of the new features that the game should have on offer.  Also, running around battlefields and killin' lots and lots of dudes never gets old for me.

Pilotwings Resort

Pilotwings.  In 3D.  Do I really need to say more?  Does it bug anyone else that Pilotwings is one word?

Dead or Alive: Dimensions

This Ridley screenshot is guaranteed to piss some of you off.

I'm not exactly the world's biggest fan of DOA or even the foremost expert and fan of the series here on Giant Bomb.  That being said, when it comes to choosing between this game and Super Street Fighter IV, I'm leaning toward DOA simply because I tried both the regular and super editions of Street Fighter IV on consoles over the past couple of years, and neither was really able to do it for me.  Well, that and the fact that the game is giving me yet another chance to allow my inner Other M fanboy that some of you have grown to loathe over the past six months another chance to beat his chest for another go, even if a minor one.
