The Best Worst Ending Ever.

Metal Saga is one of my favorite RPGs on the PS2.  A curious open-world structure that mixed the story-telling and gameplay aspects of Japanese RPGs with the ability to explore the world freely as in a western-style RPG, it's nothing if not unique, and depending on where you go and what you do, the challenge level can become intense from the outset.  It's really an underrated gem of a game.

Also, it is downright absurd.

Of course, with its open-ended nature comes a host of different ending possibilities.  You can become a famous hunter, get married, or, in quite possibly the greatest worst ending ever, just screw adventuring all together within seconds of starting the game:

(Spoilers!)

If I wasn't so overwhelmed with games sitting on my shelf, I'd want to spend some serious time revisiting Metal Saga.  It's one of those odd games released at the right moment in time for it to work.  What it does might not fly as well by today's standards, but seriously, how many RPGs, or games in general, allow you to confront a cult of bodybuilders devoted to Gluteus Maximism?

As was I the first time I watched it.  The credits started rolling and I just sat there dumbfounded, yet it was also completely awesome at the same time.

Wait, JRPG with Western influences, Saga in the title? Oh shit. Also, what the hell is Gluteus Maximism? Is it the worship of the ass or something? Sounds like a Persona sidequest or something :P.

The Gluteus Maximists are a cult of bodybuilders.  They need to be seen to be believed.  I wish I could find a good video of them, but it doesn't appear that there's anything easy of them to find on Youtube.

But there is Colonel Blueberry.  The fearsome, bloodthirsty animal:

I love awful cheesey endings some times. In fact Fahrenheit's made it just that much more special.

@alittlefroma: The responses above yours would indicate otherwise.  Also, if you really didn't care, you wouldn't have bothered posting an image as a retort.

I don't know why but the title of this thread reminded me of an old school PC game called Dark Seed II. It didn't have a bad ending instead it was more on the lines a disconcerting ending. So you spent the entire game investigating the murder of your high school sweetheart, only to find out that it was your evil doppelganger from an alternate dimension that originally posed as a friend to you. At the end of the game the doppelganger ends up stabbing you in the back and killing you as well as framing you for the murder of your sweetheart. The game ends with your character saying that "Too bad real life doesn't always have a happy ending." Then the credits roll.

I'm not kidding that was it. That was the real ending of the game. There were no other "alternate endings. Everything in the game that you worked hard for was negated at the end of the game. All of your time and effort meant diddly. YOU LOST REGARDLESS OF HOW QUICKLY OR EFFICIENTLY YOU COMPLETED THE GAME.

The reception for the ending was so bad that the official guide/walkthrough had an FAQ that confirmed that this was the actual ending. Before that no one really believed that that was the real ending to the game. Everyone thought that there had to be an alternate ending where things turned out better for the protagonist we came to care for after two games, but it turns out that wasn't the case.

So here it is, and yes the game is weird right from the start. And yes that is her face:

@nofx4208: That one is a classic. :)

@ZombiePie: Good lord.  That's the only ending to the game?!  WTF, man.

@ZombiePie: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Is that music in the beginning actually from the game? Or did the user who uploaded it just add some Chrono music to the background?

@StarFoxA: No that's the real ending. They were released the same year and relatively the same time. I wouldn't know I never played Crono Trigger.

Error on the uploaders part I guess.

Back to the topic PC adventure games back in the day weren't well known for well concieved endings. Some were disappointing like the 11th Hour (sequel to The 7th Guest). But the most agrigious would have to be the ending that killed a franchise: Quest for Glory III

By the end of the game you found out that every single act in the previous two games never happened. All of the bad guys got away, your friends were still in trouble and being tortured, and that you were actually under a spell by an evil wizard.

Then you got the "To Be Continued in the next game" ending. It was one of the first to do it and gamers got so angry that no one bought the next game and the franchise was "retired"

@ZombiePie:   Oh god.  What were they thinking when they ended Quest for Glory III like that?  Did they expect people to just accept that the first two games never happened?  It's similar to why I pretend Valkyrie Profile 2 never happened.  The ending to the first was perfect, and there wasn't any need to shake things up with ridiculous time travel BS that rendered the first game invalid.

@ZombiePie: I have played QfG 1-4 and have no idea what you are talking about in regards to the first two games not happening. I have watched the ending you posted and read the wiki article on the game and still have no idea what you're talking about.

Also, they made a QfG 5. Granted, it wasn't very good, but your statement that QfG 4 killed the series somehow is also false.

It sounds crazy, probably because pretty much none of what he posted about QfG 3 or the series is true. Maybe he heard it from a friend? I dunno.
