I don't really like mmo's that drop you in and are like "yo there's some mutha fucken big evil over there, now go stab it with this rusty spork."

I hate to break it to you, but eventually the stories for all the races eventually start to go down this path. However, there are some missions later on that are legitimately epic, and the story is definitely not one of the good parts of the game.

@Jmeisch10: Yea, the story is pretty forgettable in a lot of parts. Taking a friend or several friends along in your story can definitely speed things along. You don't need to complete the story missions to explore the world, but do recommend finishing up the story line at some point as they give nice exp and lead to and exclusive piece of gear that you can only get by completing the story missions (a item that goes in the back/cape slot). Some of the story missions can get difficult later on, especially as a squishy mesmer, so leveling and then coming back to do lower-level story missions can help.

Engineers do get kind of sidelined in dungeon PvE due to their scarcity and the community's overall lack of understanding of the class. Engineers also tend to get shoehorned into one or two builds where other classes benefit from more viable build possibilities. Mesmers have a ton of utility in dungeons and in WvWvW, and they have great group utilities and superb tools for dealing damage. For solo PvE, engineers tend to have an easier time thank to their kits and grenades, but I personally find mesmers more fun because of their active playstyle. As many people have said, you can run with both for sPvP since there's no leveling there.

There's very little point to crafting for profit since none of the professions really will make any money. I personally recommend that new players check out crafting, since it does have some benefits (mainly making leveling faster and easier), but there's no denying how much gold you will have once you hit 80 if you just sell all the materials you gather on the trading post. Deciding whether to craft or not comes down to how much you want to invest in your character and whether or not you care to spend time to gathering materials/farming dynamic event mobs for drops as you get closer to 80. Be aware that good leveling gear is dirt cheap on the trading post, and you won't have any issues keeping yourself geared via the trading post until endgame.

If you do decide to jump into crafting, a good idea would be to pick up two professions that do not use the same required fine crafting materials like jewelcrafting/tailoring or cooking/leatherworking.

The best way to make money while leveling is....leveling. Exploring and fully 100% completing zones will earn you a decent amount of change, and you can make more by selling any blues/green items you can't use. Only use the basic salvage kit and use it on salvage items or white armor/weapon items. Whenever you get a rare (yellow) drop or a popular dye, chances are that you can sell it for a profit on the trading post, so make it a habit to check trading post prices on rare items. You can even sell unidentified dyes for a decent amount of money as well if you don't care for additional dyes to customize your armor. Selling gathered materials also is a viable way of making money (if you don't want to craft), but don't go out of your way to farm gathering nodes, just hit up nodes that happen to be on your leveling path.

@selfconfessedcynic: No worries. I'm in no hurry, I just wanted to hear what all of your thoughts were on the various classes in the game. Gluck on your project, and hopefully we'll be hearing you on the next podcast.

I have a Guardian and Mesmer at 80. The Mesmer is a fun class that really requires you to think tactically, while the Guradian is an un-killable juggernaut. I love both, but my Guardian wins out for being overpowered awesome in all situations.

You can just stick with playing your Engineer if you like playing the class, as they're great in WvW and can hold their own in PvE content. You don't need to believe all the complaints, as people just like to complain on the internet (shocking, i know), but at least be aware of your class weakness so you can decide how you want to address them.

I've made a good amount of money doing WvW with a BOMB group, and of course running explorables with a good group will get you a decent amount of money as well. A gold here and there doing various things all add up.

While karma grinding in Cursed Shore, I've also discovered that doing certain dynamic event chains are great for farming rares and money (from vendoring useless items). There are diminishing returns of course, but I've made 5 gold and gotten 9 rares in approximately 4 hours of farming the Explorer Plinx event chain and other events in the intermediate area.

@audioBusting: There are a few chains that change when you fail stage(s) of the event. For instance, if players completely fail to stop the Sons of Svanir shaman in Wayfarer Foothills, the event chain doesn't default back to the original starting event, there is a new event where players have to kill the newly transformed shaman (who transforms into a gigantic icy oakheart) as he rampages across the zone. The meta-zone events in the Harathi Hinterlands also change based on which camps need to be captured.

It's a minor thing, but it would be cool if you added in a link (or a section) for the lvl 80 exotics you can buy with karma from the vendors at the various Cathedrals in Orr. All the info on the gear can be found here

@clush: You bring up valid points which I do agree with. However, we're looking at crafting from different perspectives. I'm looking at it as a investment that has relatively minimal costs (again, assuming that he doesn't need to buy a significant amount of crafting materials to keep his profession(s) leveled). He will make money by selling all his crafting mats. But the benefits of crafting (more direct interaction with the stat mechanics, easy xp, gearing alts, crafting 80 rare/exotic gear for cheap, legendaries) are significant enough for me to still recommend it as a viable option for any player to explore.

In addition, the xp you get from crafting makes leveling easier by letting a player catch up to the recommended level for the zone or by letting a player overlevel/overgear a zone (even after level scaling) to make world exploration more efficient.

Crafting in this game can be a money sink with no easy way to profit from it, but it still has its benefits and is still worth considering as an option to explore for any GW2 player. Money for class training books and gear can be easily earned through exploring and questing, without having to sell all your crafting materials. Sure, gold does become an issue at end game, but having leveled craft(s) can alleviate some of those issues. I've actually saved a lot gold at 80 by crafting my own set of exotic gear and superior runes, since prices for good lvl 80 gear are so overpriced.

Again, I'm arguing that crafting is a option worth exploring that can turn into a good investment. From my experience it's relatively easy to craft and have enough money to level at the same time. If you're hellbent on maximizing the amount of money you get while leveling, then by all means sell everything.

Good episode! I would love to see Sookee make a guest appearance on the podcast, but doing so would probably add an hour of tangents to the podcast. In one of you future episodes, you guys should talk about class builds, and what you guys think the roles for different classes are in sPvP, Wuv Wuv, and explorable dungeons. Some discussion on class theorycrafting would be awesome.
