The US Army uses Ventrilo, why can't you? This VoIP thing seems to be a real sticking point

I already use Ventrilo-type software. But I can't communicate with everybody else in public matches with giving them my TS server. Just think how CSGO would look like if it didn't support voice comms. Think about it like that. BF was way more like CS at some point in terms of communication options.

And you could say "Who would even use VOIP anymore?" and you are right, it would turn into a case of people disabling it "Because it's cancer", but that would be because of the community itself which could care less about tactics anyway, which is because of the egotistic mechanics build into the game and because how forgiving the gameplay has become.

What differentiates more hardcore games from more casual ones is not only about how realistic it is or how many harsh mechanics there are but also the amount of information presented to the player. And if the game gives too little info, you want people with reads and relevant info to be able to communicate that to others. But that's also not what Battlefield is anymore about.

Back in the day you could sneak across the map in your gillie suit hiding in the grass and if somebody saw you but lost you, they could specifically tell to others that you were a sniper. And that was with the commorose. Now you just need to press Q in the general direction of the enemy sniper, whose scope is shining like a motherfucker.

Just no.

No game does what Battlefield 4 does as well as Battlefield 4 does it.

BF2 did everything BF4 does right now + the aforementioned VOIP - the graphics, sound and destruction.

You say that they started cutting corners but you don't name anything specific.

I said specifically what kinds of things were absent from many future games since the "classic era": VOIP - which is still not back, commorose - for which the community had to bitch so much, BattleRecorder to make the game more competitive and as far as I can tell, no dedicated servers or modding, which enchance the ability of communities to provide better service.

You want new time periods but what do they really have left? They've done WW2, Korea, Vietnam, 90s, 2000s, 2010, 2020, 2142. They could go a little bit more near future but at this point they couldn't have anything more technologically advanced than 2142. 1862? The problem with going to a time period before WW2 is that guns from before that time aren't fun to shoot in videogames as Jeff always points out.

Going back is also an option. People are craving for a WWII themed BF done in Frostbite. 1943 was a success for them and in order to focus on BF3 they cancelled its PC port and since then we've had 4 modern time BFs in a row.

As for the "purity" of Battlefield I don't think it comes from mechanics as much as it does from Battlefield feeling like you'd expect Battlefield to feel.

But Battlefield is pretty much just mechanics and at the center of them lies conquest, which is such a good gamemode: a mix of deathmatch and king of the hill. What you are describing with running through a house while a tank is searching for you is because of the mechanics - combined warfare. And crazy shit shouldn't happen all the time - the game has turned into a bombastic shooter with epic LOL moments every 5 minutes. All of these "Trolling with knives" and "EPIC kill" videos are happening because there bad mechanics that reward non-tactical gameplay. Because of shit like this and because there is no BattleRecorder anymore BF will never be a competitive eSports again.

But saying that that game is bad is just straight up wrong.

It's not a bad game - it's a bad Battlefield game we've been playing since 2011 with little variance. If DICE wanted to make something great they should've made BF4 in 2011, not 13, with added VOIP.

The only thing I can think of is The Big Live Live Show Live 3 (No idea what part it's in). There was the 100 nugget challenge that Alexis did.

It's not there. Skipped through it thoroughly. :(

So I started following Gaintbomb in 2013. Before that I knew almost nothing about it.

Way before that, but not before 2010, Totalbiscuit linked a Gaintbomb stream where was a McDonalds eating contest in which Brad lost. Don't know what stream it was and I guess it wasn't premium, since I could watch it without being a subscriber.

Can somebody find me that stream? I really want to see what was all that about!

@peezmachine: I already watched "The Eleventh Hour", from 2010. I really didn't like it that much. The format of the series is not for me.
