Starting the episode: I don't know what this amulet looks like, but I hope that if Ben reaches it that it looks incredibly bland with no fanfare whatsoever. That would, somehow, be perfect to me.
Since watching this I now keep picturing the Fifty Centaur being ridden about by the members of Nickelback. I chuckle every time. My kids probably think I'm bonkers.
As for Rogue, I remain pleased that I can watch Ben play this rather than play this myself. I have little issue with games with randomized/procedurally generated elements, but this seems to lean too much into chance. If I were to play and win, I would be left thinking that it's not because I did anything correctly, but because the virtual die rolls over which I have no influence were in my favor.
This doesn't stop being amazing. Poor Ben... he had his hopes raised so very high after that first episode. I'm just happy that he's taking these losses with a smile, and without any apparent hint of rage. This, without hearing what is happening after the recording is stopped, of course :-)
If this series has taught me anything thus far, with its single episode, is that the term 'Rogue-Like' and 'Rogue-Lite' are even less accurate a name for a subgenre than 'Metroidvania'. This is NOT to say that Rogue is, to me, a bad game; only that now that I have finally witnessed Rogue in action, the subgenre labels seem even more ridiculous.
I was trying to figure out how I felt about this, and settled on it looking kind of... average. Not something that I would want to spend any time on. The humour seems an odd mish mash of jokes that would appeal to my kids (the dentist joke), and those that might appeal to a teenager (the getting high jokes). Maybe that's the issue, that this game isn't for a 42 year old.
It doesn't seem terrible at all, just not something that grabbed me based upon what I saw here.
Good on Abby for pushing through that. Remix 6 looked like a mess since she started her attempts on it. I mentioned in chat that it seemed to me (as someone who was not only not playing, but has NEVER played this game... so take a brick of salt with this statement) that the biggest problem was that the segments did not flow together at ALL. They just seemed to have a stop/start element to them where the other Remixes, so far, meld together at least a little, even if they were somewhat forced at times.
There was so much here that made me happy. I was watching Alex' trucking stream live when the opening song came on, and I couldn't stop laughing throughout the entirety of that tune. That didn't change here. I need to find that song and play it during a meeting...
