What's Important To You?

So, a while back I pledged to be more active here on Giant Bomb, and I still intend to stand by that.  I've been a little busy the last few months, but things are starting to wind down a little bit, and I'm finding myself with more time on my hands.  I should start working on some things here and there pretty soon, but I've got something I'd like to ask all of you.

Actually, I have a few things I'd like to ask you.  When you guys read reviews, how much are you actually taking from a review?  Will a positive or negative review determine if you will make that final purchase?  Personally, I don't take too much from a review, other than it being another opinion.  I'll usually read several reviews and opinions and take it all into consideration.

Also, along those lines, what is it that you look for in a review?  Do you like reviews that are a little more personal and include some of the reviewers views and opinions?  Or do you like the reviewer that sort of stands back and tries to look at a everything through another persons eyes?  I, myself, like a review and a reviewer that doesn't mind including a personal opinion.  That's why I like the gentlemen here and Giant Bomb so much.  They seem to like what I like and understand what I want out of a product (though that's not to say I don't disagree here and there).

How about you guys?  I'd love to hear your opinions and what you have to say.  Let's share!

Won't Be Making That Trip to Vegas...

I'll admit it: I've been known to pre order a game or two from GameStop.  My local GameStop actually isn't too bad, and I'm a former employee, so I like to help a few old friends out and throw a pre order their.  I know I'm buying these games anyway, so why not?  Anyway, at some point, I laid down some cash for the ever-so-ridiculous but rather entertaining looking Midway game This Is Vegas.  Now, I know what you're thinking:  "Artemis, why on Earth are you looking forward to such a terrible looking game?"  Honestly, I'm not really sure.  Some might probably just call it some sort of Grand Theft Auto rip-off, while others just might say that game looked way to silly.

If you haven't been paying attention to this game, here's a taste of exactly just how silly this game is:

Now, as silly as all that might seem... this looks like it could've been a lot of fun.  It almost looks about as absurd as the Saint's Row games, and I love me some Saint's Row.  You have a freaking Buzz meter that you fill by simply doing cool stuff!  Bar fights, drinking, urinating, dancing and wet t shirts... it all just sounds like a harmless good time.  Just look at the swagger in that guys walk when you start filling that buzz meter!  It's all just so out there and ridiculous!  I mean, how many other chances are you going to get to lead a synchronized dance routine?

You'll notice I used the word could've... You see, I got the call from GameStop this morning that This Is Vegas had been canceled.  It's like getting the call that an aunt or yours that you sort of knew and liked but never really saw that often had passed away.  I was pretty sad to hear the news that it won't be hitting shelves, though not really surprised (We all know the deal about Midway, right?)  I was hoping that this would be the game to rise above all that, because it seemed like they were putting a substantial amount of push behind it, but once all the troubles really started rolling in, word about this game got really quiet.  It was a bad sign.  While there is no official word, I feel like GameStop's word is solid enough.  I've gotten bad news like this from them many times (I'm still broken up about the Highlander game!)  I don't know, maybe one of these days we'll see this game again.  I recently heard that the 100 Bullets game is back in production, so maybe we'll see this as well?

...Yeah.  I doubt it, too.

Was anyone else looking forward to this, other than me?

West Philidelphia...

Alright, I'll admit it.  I have no interest in DJ Hero, whatsoever. Okay, I think the idea is neat, and even some of the mixes don't sound that terrible.  I was pretty much done with rhythm games after Guitar Hero III.  It wasn't a bad game at all, but it just wasn't the Guitar Hero I remembered.  I still love me some Rock Band, though!

Anyway, back on topic!  I wasn't at all interested in DJ Hero... until today:

DJ Jazzy Jeff, wha wha!?  Granted, it's still not enough to make me want to buy the game... but I just think it's pretty awesome they included him.  Will Smith kind of exploded after the Fresh Prince, and I felt like people kind of forgot about Jazzy Jeff, so I'm real happy to see him getting a little shine.

Teen Threatens Act of Terrorism In WoW

So, I was browsing The Escapist this morning and stumbled across this crazy story.  For those not interested in following the link, here's this gist of it:

"The 18-year-old from Johnson County, Indiana, said that he "was going to board a plane at 7:30 to Chicago and that (he) was going to try and kill as many Americans as possible," reports Destructioid. Apparently, the moron in question repeated this claim more than once, which I imagine is similar to smashing your foot with a sledgehammer, then repeatedly doing it over and over again to see if it'll still hurt.

Predictably, Blizzard employees saw the announcements and notified the proper authorities. The teen quickly backpedaled, claiming that someone had hacked his account, but that didn't stop the FBI from seizing his computer to investigate the incident further."

Now, as stated, the kid claimed someone had hacked his account, and I'm willing to give this kid the benefit of the doubt.  I refuse to believe that anyone could possibly be this stupid.  It's bad enough that you're enough of a jackass to even think up something as awful as this, but to then log on to the biggest MMO in the world and discuss those plans?  You might as well just turn yourself in, at that point.

I'd really like to try to follow this story as it develops, because I am curious to see how it all unfolds.  It seems like there's always something completely insane going on around these MMOs.  I've never been much for Wow, or games like it, but I can't help but be a little interested when I read crazy stories like this.

Ah, the Internet. You'll eventually be the death of us all, but I can't help but love ya.

Getting Involved

I think I'm going to get more involved in the Giant Bomb community.  Not only in the Giant Bomb community, but more involved in the gaming community.  I feel the need to start writing more blogs, reviews and maybe even recording some video content (video reviews and other related things). Now, I've dabbled in things of this sort before, but I've never taken it too seriously.

I've written reviews on other sites, and I've had a blog here and there, but I never really put a lot of effort into any of it.  This is where you guys come in:  I don't know if anyone is actually reading this, but I want your help.  I'm not going to sit here and pretend like I'm going to just begin writing these excellent reviews right out of the gate.  I want your feedback, Giant Bomb community.  If you like my work, let me know, a little encouragement never hurt anybody.  But if you're sitting there reading my reviews, and you think they're absolute garbage, you let me know!  There's one catch, though:  I want some real constructive criticisms here, people.  You think I could do something a little better?  Tell me what it is.  You think my reviews are a little stale?  Tell me how you think I can freshen them up.  I welcome any and all help you can throw my way.  Also, I want to use this as an opportunity to become much better at recording and editing video, so except the occasional video posting from gametrailers.com.

Now, considering most of you will be jumping on and reviewing the big triple A titles on day one, I'm going to try to stay away from your Grand Theft Autos and your Metal Gear Solids.  I'll probably make my first couple reviews about some older titles I love (or hate), while I try to get into the swing of things.  Once I find my way, I'll probably being to review those titles that kind of get buried under the more popular names.  They probably won't be the games you haven't heard of, but they will be the games that no one else is really talking about.  If you have any games you might want to see me review, drop me a comment, and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks in advance for any and all help, Giant Bomb community.   I promise, I'll try my best not to be a douche bag.  I'm sure you can appreciate that, around here.

Have you ever...

... been somewhere, maybe in a car on a long trip, and had to urinate really really bad?  Like, almost to the point where you want to cry?  Then finally, after waiting for so long, you finally pull over at a rest stop.  You know that feeling of relief you get when you relieve yourself after holding it in for so long?  That's what this is like.

Giant Bomb is like... peeing ...

Shut up, you know what I mean.  It's great!
