I think rogue-likes, battle royale and service games definitely defined this generation, but I don't think they count as "genres". Not even subgenres, as battle royale is more a multiplayer mode, and Dead Cells is pretty different to Slasher's Keep. If anything, I think the explosion of indie development in all platforms created a plethora of very specific experiences, the "niche genre"

Probably a tie between Nier 1.2247... and Ghostwire: Tokyo.

Also curious about Stray and Vampire the Masquerade 2.

I don't think it's odd, if anything, I think it's kind of a boring and unsurprising choice.

Sure, he is popular and iconic, but at the end of the day, he is a dude with a big sword... it is not like Smash was lacking in dudes with swords, even edgelordy ones. It doesn't help that Cloud is already there, so it seems more like they are completing a set instead of thinking interesting choices. It's like the new characters where Akuma (because Ryu is there) and Big Boss (because Snake is there)...

I agree that Smash has become a wider celebration of brands than just Nintendo (even when it is zealously guarded by them), and that is why I love when they think outside the box. Minecraft Steve was a great idea... why not more like that. If the only real condition is that it has to be in switch games, why not Rabbits, Spiro, Barbarian from Diablo 3 or Jonesy from Fortnite.

I think people underestimate than being a public celebrity personality, a host personality and being a gaming personality are very different skillset. I have a lot of respect for Kojima, Blow and Miyamoto. Do I want to listen to them talking about development or lighting techniques? Absolutely. Do I want to see them struggling for hours with the language and trying to deliver on jokes somebody else wrote (that are likely going to land dead at their feet)? Hell no.

The best we can hope for is a public celebrity that is known for having familiarity with games. Just call Jack Black... The alternatives are celebrities that are not familiar or interested, and see it on the level of a Bar Mitzvah or a Prom (like Joel McHale) or celebrities that are only known by the gaming audience and cringe inducing on the general public (like Ninja or Dr Disrespect). Neither of those options is better than the alternative we got...

@efesell: Ok, I haven't played the game, and obviously are not familiar with the development process, so my comment seems a little extreme. Not saying they intentionally are trying to trigger epileptic seizures on people, just that this was not a fortuitous effect and it should have been detected and changed before release.

Just pointing out that this does not get covered by the epilepsy disclaimer most games have, and so they shouldn't get a pass. Those are there to get covered in case a series of random particle effects, a combination of the game art and characters interaction at the precise moment may trigger a seizure. To test all those variables in a game would be a QA nightmare. This is a canned transition animation, it is the same every time... Knowingly or not, this was built from the ground up by an artist.

It is kind of fucked up that an artist decided to imitate a machine that literally gives people epilepsy, and no one on the chain thought it was a bad idea. But the response of the community to the warning is a new low on human interaction.

Even if I was really interested (which has diminished in the last couple months), I currently don't have a computer good enough to run it decently. So, I am going to wait for a heavily discounted sale on GoG or Steam (knowing CDProjekt, those will come), and would play it sooner if they released a demo.

Oscar Isaac is playing Snake, so have the 4th wall breaking address him instead of the player. Instead of reading a memory card, Psycho Mantis reads his IMDB page. "I see you've been playing a lot of action roles lately." "You're not supposed to say that, your lines were changed in the last rewrite." "Faster, more intense." Have a short (height) joke referencing Kojima's obsession with ladders.

Have him look straight at the camera and say: "Oh, I see you are sleeping during the movie, James"

They can change it in dubbing to the most common name in that language.

There has been rumors of a Metal Gear Solid Movie every couple years for the last 20 years. I will take them seriously once there are photographs, trailers and started shooting... and even then I will be reluctant until they actually premiere that thing.

Nice catch with Isaacs, though... he is a pretty good actor, and I have a lot of confidence he can pull it off, if they give him something to work with.
