Things that I don't like to see in RPGs

Role playing ( to be more precise, computer role playing, because I don't have the slightest of interest in JRPGs ) is my favorite genre. But there are some elements that can completely ruin the experience. The list below belongs to these elements. ( Not in order ) ( UNDER CONSTRUCTION )

List items

  • When I kill an enemy in a CRPG, I want the enemy to stay dead permanantly. When I kill an enemy and see him ( it ) alive again when I reload or visit the area again after a while, I have the feeling that I just did a worthless grinding. But when enemy is killed and I know he ( it ) will stay that way forever, it gives a feeling that I accompolished something.

  • I really hate fetch quest, they are mostly result of laziness and lack of idea and are only there to add to the game time.

  • Backtracking is a two sided coin, it can be both rewarding and compelling AND realistic ( Gothic series ) and boring and annoying. ( Dungeon Siege II ). But most of the time, it's the latter for me. There's no fun visiting the same area and spend a lot of time walking to open a chest or kill a creature you couldn't open or kill before.

  • I hate DLCs, especially for RPGs, they are mostly cheap, waste of time and quick money-grabs.

  • For the obvious reasons, I hate escort mission not only in RPGs, but in all of games.

  • Many people might like it , but I don't want these kinds of gimmick in my role playing experience. Especially if they become a part of the main story or a big side-quest is dedicated to them.

  • I really hate level caps. They somehow make me feel limited. If developers don't want players to become overpowered, they should put less monsters around or limit the XP points you get , level-cap is just not good.

Of course, it's obvious I'm talking about RPGs that you can reach your level-cap before finishing the game. ( like Fallout 3 ).

  • lvl scaling is a joke. It's so bad it can totally ruin a game like oblivion which had potential, but level-scaling made it an absolute snooze-fest after some point.

  • I don't like difficulty levels in RPGs. I want RPGs to be harder or easier depending on how well I played the game, put my skills in use, used better tactics, etc, not by a simple choice at the start of the game. In other words, I want to have the same obstacles and challenges of everyone who played the game , but depending on our skill and understanding of game's mechanics, difficulty of the game be different to us.

  • I'm not sexist, but I don't like female protagonists, especially in RPGs. Establishing a connection with my character is very important for me and I can't do it when the main character's gender is fixed as female and cannot be changed.

  • One of the reasons I don't like Diablo clones like many other people do is because they're based on grinding and I really hate it. There's no point killing something and getting more powerful to kill something bigger and so on. It bores me to tears.

  • The main reason I don't like respawning is because it's illogical, damages story and it's not explained very well. ( except in Planescape : Torment maybe ) The other minor reason is that I'd rather reload instead of getting respawned with some penalties ( no matter how small they are ).

  • I want to save my game anytime I want and continue it later from any point I want. Checkpoints ( or auto-saves ) are good in case you forgot to manually save your game, but when they become the sole point to continue your game, it's a big disappointment for me.
