@JCTango: I see the word "Obsidian" on the box. This makes me fully intend to go charisma and sneaking or some such nonsense.

That is exactly what you should do.

@Humanity: I have put time into it. I'm currently halfway through my DMD playthrough and have only the Kablooey abilities to unlock. The combat is decent, sure, but I still find it lacking. I just wish there was a lockon so that I could properly focus on the enemies I want to. It's also pretty slow, especially when the bigger enemies show up.

Having said that, the game is fun and I'm not gonna dismiss the creativity on show in the aesthetics of the levels; I just hope they put that much effort into the combat in DmC2.

I mostly agree with this. The lack of lock-on is ridiculously frustrating. The combat also has the potential to be deep, but you barely need it. Aquila is way too powerful not only for controlling fights but also for giving your style meter a free easy boost. I'm almost done with Son of Sparda and the game is still a snooze-fest difficulty-wise. Platforming is a bit too long, bosses are not fun to fight, but they are fun to look at and hear. I do like the new Dante though, he fits into the mold of Devil May Cry's "Let's set up a situation for Dante to do something stylish and pop a one-liner" cutscenes quite well.

So I guess the game is alright.

That patch won't fix a fundamentally badly designed game. No amount of patches will.

Also, how is it only 1.0.7? Surely they should be at about v8.0.1 by now

I don't mean to be reductive but this is pretty much it. It is almost unfair to call it Diablo 3. I'll just go back to playing Torchlight 2 and Path of Exile like all the other butthurt people.

From what I understand of Fire Emblem, the stories are pretty loosely connected, except for a couple like FE6 and 7, so your starting point doesn't matter much story-wise. I really like the original North American Fire Emblem for Game Boy Advance. Sacred Stones is one of the easier games because you can grind out a bit in-between chapters and I just feel some of the fights overall were easier. Shadow Dragon, the remake/first release of the original game on DS is pretty enjoyable too, as well as Path of Radiance on the Gamecube. I've also played Fire Emblem 6 which was enjoyable, but you'll have to be a bit more clever in finding a way to play that game.

I have never really found a Fire Emblem game anything less than enjoyable, so really just take a pick. Awakening is reason number like 8 I need to get a 3DS.

That is actually what you want to do. You want to enter the first skill level ascension that I like to call "Well at least I'm not feeding." Once you learn to observe your enemies and not die the second you get into their vision you can learn when to be aggressive.

@TheFreepie:

This is what I understand about Russians and Brazilians, from people who hail from those countries:

In Brazil and in Russia, Dota is very popular. The original WC3 Dota ran on WC3 which was very easy to pirate so you could get the game for free, and the system requirements were very low so you could play it on pretty much any computer. This draws a lot of younger kids into playing Dota (more than in other regions just by quality of its popularity in the nation) so you get a lot of insufferable young'uns screaming obscenities. This causes some of the more well-mannered (and fun to play with) Russians and Brazilians to go to other servers so they don't have to suffer those assholes. This increases queue times on their home servers, so the insufferable assholes migrate as well. I have also heard reports that the RU and BR servers actually give worse ping than their EU and NA counterparts. That being said, many Russians and Brazilians seem to actually know enough English to communicate, but there are assholes who refuse to speak any English except "i fuk u mom noob" because those are the ones who make all the other Russians and Brazilians look bad.

I hope this clears things up. I only lump the two nationalities together because I've heard ridiculously similar stories from actual people who live there. I just feel bad because I've played with a handful of people from both nations and they seem like normal people, it is just that there seems to be (I can't say if there actually are, confirmation bias and all) more whiny, insufferable assholes that hail from their country than any other.

What I am trying to say is, to all of you normal Russian and Brazilian Dota 2 players out there; I'm sorry you have a bunch of dicks who share the same nationality as you. They are all giving you a bad name.

Well fuck, now I have to go replay Dark Souls. Thanks, power of suggestion.

Back on track: I'm sure someone better at DS than me will shoot this down, but I had a lot of success through the majority of the game using a good shield (IE one that blocks 100% physical damage, assuming you have the stamina) and a spear in my other hand. The ability to both block and attack simultaneously cannot be overstated. I eventually graduated onto bigger, better and harder to wield weapons, but learning the ropes with shield and spear were essential for me.

As for Smough and Big O, I've never beaten them by myself. Summoning even one dude who is well equipped and knows whats going on makes a huge difference.

damn I love this game.

Yeah the spear+shield combo can be ridiculously useless in some fights. You get ass-blasted in any fight where the spear can't break the enemy Poise because you will probably get staggered from the blocking you're about to do. It is also not a very good strategy in PVP either. A spear is good as an alternate weapon just because of the ridiculous reach and quick recovery, but the ability to block a hit is worthless when you can just learn when to attack and dodge.

I've never summoned help for any boss, because I'm no coward.

...

No really though, I think it is unfair to fight a boss your first time by summmoning help (even the NPCs), but after the first win it is fair game. I think my average death on O&S after my first is 1 death, then I kill them. Also, killing Ornstein first makes it really, really easy. Especially since you can make Ornstein separate from Smough very easily. The big difference about O&S as opposed to other Dark Souls bosses is that you have to be much, much more patient than you do with most of the other bosses.

(To prove my Dark souls street cred/nerdiness I have almost completed the game only using dual Cestus/Claws and Miracles).

@Loafsmooch:

Yeah I think a lot of people underestimate Crossbows/Throwing. I built a character I named "Ambidextross." Who had Crossbows/Throwing/Unarmed/Shieldbearer/Psionics/Tinkering/Archaeology. No worries about traps, I could push people away, heal myself, tank hits, and do tons of damage from a range. It was one of the first builds I beat Dredmor pre-RotDG.

As long as you don't end up making "useless" decisions (like specializing in multiple weapon types) most any skill distribution can be viable. Really it is about mitigating your "weak floors." For example, a magey Primordial Magic build will keep you safe on pretty much every floor except Floor 9.

If you want a "I Wanna Beat The Dredmor" build, you can do something like this;

(Any Melee Skill, I really like Unarmed)

Necronomiconomics

Astrology

Armor Mastery

Berzerking

Psionics

Archaeology

Necro, Astrology, Armor Mastery, and Berzerking will give you powerful defense the entire game (Astrology and Necronomiconomics gets you a lot of Necromantic resistance). Berzerking gives hella magic resistance, Psionics gives you an amazing early-game push and some healing spells, the melee skill is obvious, and Archaeology is mostly for the ability to turn unwanted magic items (arefacts) into EXP. You can easily gain a 2-3 level advantage on what the game expects with just This Belongs In A Museum!

For a bonus round, you can switch out Psionics or your melee skill for either Golemancy or Primordial Magic. The summons from those classes can tank all the way up to Dredmor.

@Levio: Look, I understand you're frustrated, but the item you need to fight Phalanx is in the main path to fight him. All you have to do is explore just a little (literally, just turn a corner and it is there) and you get the item. Also, what is the problem with that? If the first boss has to work harder than you do to win why is that unacceptable? It sounds more like you don't want to improve your play and you'd rather kick your feet and call it unfair.
