I agree with what you're saying, but that's a bad example given that nothing in those environments are Mario-like, and the fact that Mario is animating so damn poorly might be the biggest point of contrast.

Great article. The most I've enjoyed this feature, and the thing that has finally made me understand what the fuck The Lawnmower Man is and that picture of that awful CGI man from it.

HOWEVER, that was a heartbreaking reference to the Genesis VR Troopers game. I hate(d) that show, but I have always thought that game was rad. As a fighting game it boils down to being another Street Fighter II/Mortal Kombat ripoff, yeah, but it looks and sounds so awesome.

Sam Fisher literally cracks jokes pretty often. In the original 3 games at least. That was the worst example, but yes, the Tom Clancy oeuvre is generally pretty humorless.

I'm disappointed that nobody has mentioned this, but David Jaffe was neither on Castle, World, Land or Legend of Illusion for that matter. Those were all Sega developed and published. He was a designer on Mickey Mania: The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse, which was developed by Traveller's Tales and published by Sony Imagesoft.
