PSN down for the count, but for how long?

On the evening of April 19 2011, the PlayStation Network was offline due to an unknown reason.   Little did we know in the days to come it would be worse than anyone could have imagined.   Now two weeks later, the online service offered to gamers by Sony still remains out of commission, but the big question here is, how much longer will million’s of gamers have to wait?

When the PlayStation Network went down just about 2 weeks ago, nobody knew what the issue was, or how long it would be down for.   Now that the information is out there, and what has happened to the online service, millions of gamers still wait for PSN to come back up.   Sony has already had various press conferences and posted various blogs about the situation, which you can check out here.   Even though Sony has explained what has happened, and what perks they plan to give out once the PlayStation Network is back online, is it good enough?   Sony has offered a free month of their premium service, PlayStation Plus to their non-subscribers of the service.   As for those who already pay for it, they just get an extra free month added on.

Along with those perks, Sony has said to also be offering a free download once the services are back up and running at 100%.   Another thing that perplexes a lot of gamers is when the service is back up, the PlayStation Store, where gamers can download demos, buy games, movies, and other merchandise will not be up right away.   Obviously this breach of security is a big deal for Sony and has hurt them in a huge way.   At my local GameStop, an employee told me that, 8 people have traded in their PS3’s to purchase XBOX360s, and that is due to this network epidemic.

As the days turn into weeks, and more and more gamers become frustrated that the service has yet to be resumed, another question arises.   How will this affect Sony in the months to come?   The Electronic Entertainment Expo or also known as E3 is right around the corner.   Will gamers be able to trust the words Sony uses in their press conference?   With that being said, Sony is still working hard to get the service fixed, but with the biggest gaming convention in the world looming, what will Sony need to do to regain the trust of its millions of customers?
