honestly, I think the question is kinda stupid.  "the most skill"? you can't measure that. each of those games requires certain skills. some of them more varied skills, many of them very different ones. But you can't say "game X requires 4.7 times more skill than games Y and Z, etc"

I think this guy is right. Playing, in the most extreme case, a Medic in Team Fortress 2 is completely different from playing a Marathon Lightweight Commando Knife Runner in MW2.
hey don't get too personal here! :D :D :D

I voted for Bioshock 2 because it blows my mind that you put it on the list.

haha I didn't even see that, nice :) I like that it's on the list, I had fun with the multiplayer!
I really enjoyed bioshock 2's MP, and feel like more people should give it a try.
I've played it a few times 2 years ago when i was in Florida, US. I am now in Asia and no games could be found, i was wondering if it is still active in US (East)?

Well, this is probably playing with semantics, but I tend to classify hand-eye coordination and lightning reflexes are something else. Talents or natural abilities, perhaps? Hand-eye coordination can be improved through practice, yes, but both are susceptible to degeneration over time. I'm not sure if lightning reflexes can even be learned. Physical proficiency will deteriorate as a player ages regardless their playtime. However, patience, caution and your two additional suggestions of map knowledge and pattern recognition can remain with a player long after they realize that they just aren't as quick as they once were. I don't believe the thread was entirely pointless since it prompted a little indepth conversation on how we look at player skill sets within games. The OT's article clearly states that he loves CounterStrike but feels that Quake is more demanding than CounterStrike. If the intent was to get people who love a specific game to argue that theirs requires the most skill, I'd think he'd start by promoting CS. As for me, I get killed equally fast in all these competitive games so I don't have a pony to plug. You are correct, however, that ultimately the point is moot because of the differences between games and the dissimilarities between gamers.

True, to a certain point some things we are born with. But this specific use of reflexes and coordination has to be learned, we are not genetically predisposed to play video games. Keeping your balance on a bike is also a reflex, but not one you're born with.

One could argue then that the actual level of skill required in one instance (let's say "shooting a head that pops over some cover"), might not be as high in all instances. But then it usually requires you to be better at something else as well. So a game like ARMA requires you to be more of a generalist, where as MW2 requires a higher level in fewer skill sets.

I think PenguinDust was referring to the speed of your reflexes when he said: "I'm not sure if lightning reflexes can even be learned" instead of learning a muscle's reflex.

According to this, it is stupid to compare a lot of things then.
Sure I can't say "game X requires 4.7 times more skill than games Y and Z", so what?
Although it is not the most effective way, by the process of elimination.. you can arrive at an answer.

as someone will undoubtedly point out in a more dick-ish way, gears of war isnt an fps, its third person.

Yes i apologize, i didn't put much thought in creating this poll.
And unfortunately i can't edit it.. let it be my embarrassment and proof of my stupidity.

So, if anyone who have the power to edit the poll.. please remove Gears of War, Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3 on my behalf. Thanks in advance!

For most people who know me or read my last post, you are most likely going to guess that my answer is "Counter-Strike 1.6". Without a doubt, Counter-Strike 1.6 is my favorite FPS of all time. I love it for it's recoil system: every gun has their specific recoil pattern and little quirk, how you control your avatar greatly affects it too. Not to mention the thinking and skill required when playing in a round of pub or match. But no, Counter-Strike 1.6 is not what i have in mind.

High level Team Fortress 2 matches are fun to watch, specially when listening to the Mumble live casts or VODs about them. So much strategy and teamwork and less of the oneshot-kill bullshit the Counter-Strike games usually have, battles are usually drawn out firefights not over in 2 seconds.

So a "oneshot-kill" by the Sniper class in TF2 is not bullshit?
sorry, you probably just die a lot in counter-strike and can't even keep a 1:1 KDR..
making a headshot in Counter-Strike is not bullshit, it depends on your skill.

Quake, CS and Starcraft are acceptable e-sports. Cowadoody, Halo, Smash Bros., etc. are all babbys first multiplayer game and are a massive joke amongst the serious e-sports community.

I agree with almost everything you said, but Smash Bros is not a joke.

Excuse my ignorance, but in competitive Smash Bros what setting are used?

Seems like it would be entirely luck based with any item drops and I personally can't see the fun without the items. =/

Anyways, competitive starcraft 2 is the most awesome thing i have ever witnessed!

I'm not an expert on smash. But i think it's no items, 5 lives.
I think it's a fun game to compete against, their gameplay and mechanics are really unique..
imagine this:
I'll attempt to knock my opponent towards the sides of the screen,
then risk my own life, jumping out and hit them further, decreasing the likely hood for them to make it back
turn around and use my second jump or up move,
grab on the edge and hog it. (only one person can grab on the edge at a time)

I think it's great that e-sports leagues exist because it means I can see high level players matched against each other on a regular basis with high production values. I have more fun watching high level Street fighter and Starcraft matches than I do actually playing the games most of the time. Anyone can put up videos of themselves playing scrubs online, but tournaments with all top players are awesome.
Yup, and learning from them.
