I've queued this in Gamefly, which goes to say that my opinion is that it's not worth buying without trying.

I'm hoping for that Devil May Cry / Bayonetta kind of progression, where as you improve you become untouchable and super-cool. If the flight/rappel stuff is solid and strategic (and reliable) I know I'll have lots of mindless fun in this game.

What actually made me pull the trigger was the multiplayer stuff they scratched toward the end of the video. Kinda had a Helldivers/Planetside feel, where there's like a 'global' campaign and everyone's just out chipping away at the objective by playing multiplayer. I'm into multiplayer carrot-on-a-stick stuff like that.

@clagnaught: No worries man, it's an honest mistake. I'm more a journey > destination kind of guy so I'll still have my fun.

Damn tempting to go back and do what you did though...

Can you edit this post title or something? I came in here wanting to help a bro through the tutorial but ended up reading stuff I feel I shouldn't have =/

I binged on this for about 5-6 hours yesterday and got to 123 +15. I think towards the beginning your number will reflect how much you like to just turn away and explore other tutorials vs. just digging into every chain and area until you make it through. I am definitely the former =)

Such a roller coaster of a game, I am a huge fan right now. For some of my failed attempts I've muttered '**** you Jonathan Blow...', don't think I've played a game that has gotten so intimate with me when I can't progress. On other puzzles I solve I would cheer and say 'Jonathan Blow, you crazy so-and-so/madman/genius'.

Talking about the two achivements I've gotten so far:

Symmetry taught me how to think like a crazy ass in order to solve these. Great puzzles. Kudos to Mr. Blow and team. What about that dark panel at the water's edge?? Ahh!!

Desert Ruin was a huge bitch to get through. Busted out the notepad real quick and even then... Anyway, very cool interactions with the light and shadows.

Agree with the others in this topic: those + puzzles are seriously getting me curious.

So I don't know what it means to say this is probably my most anticipated game in the recent years. I have great memories of me and friends teaming up and creating awesome builds that would work together and destroy the other team. I probably put more hours into PD than almost any other game, the original had the best 2 v 2 matches around and I had no desire to get a xbone until this announcement.

That's all...Just had to say how excited I am and get that out.

It's really awesome to know that I'm not alone in thinking this game is amazing.

I thought the Killer Instinct remake was well done as far as design and the game itself, but not my cup of tea as far as fighting games goes.

This, though, I have super high hopes for. If it's the same team as KI, they'll nail this and I have no worries at all (except for how they structure+price out the add'l content).

Nah, I don't think this is more than just being a veteran critic. I think Jeff in particular has some high standards that he himself would admit are pretty subjective (which makes his writing more interesting in my opinion).

If you don't mind me sniping a quote from you:

... It's perfectly fine to just not like something, but is it necessary to keep taking the piss incessantly anytime something a little bit outside of your comfort zone is shown and you barely know anything about it? Yeh it's funny the first 10 times, but eventually doesn't it get a bit grating?

If there was a tea leaf to read here, it'd be that I think that Jeff hates marketing and anything related to that field, and that E3 is a giant marketing circlejerk.

The cynicism gets pretty transparent sometimes and you can sometimes feel the eyerolls, but I think they're pretty conscious of the fact -- trying to balance video games as your job's responsibility vs. actually enjoying the games as entertainment is tough shit, and that fight gets harder every day (ask any movie or music critic).

Can't wait to see a new one. It's such an obscure thing to announce at such a big event, let alone even revive. I want to know the story behind all that.

Totally caught my by surprise man, to have an idea like that go all the way up the Microsoft chain and lead to funding?? Whoever spearheaded that is my hero.

My guess goes entirely to Phil Spencer. Or a mix of him and Ken Lobb, since he presented it.

My heroes!! You could kinda tell that Ken was super excited to reveal the trailer (or maybe that was just good acting). He said "good design" was how they choose which game to remake, that made me giddy.

So happy to see all the superfans in here - this game really was such a huge impact in my life and in video game culture in general, just given the context:

  • One of the first original XBox games to have some serious environment destruction (model swaps before model swaps were cool)
  • Came out right around the time of Magic the Gathering: Battlegrounds, which is a game that began with the same idea but executed poorly. Phantom Dust came around and totally reenergized me on the card-game-as-action concept.
  • 20$ at launch! I wanted to buy it simply because it was one of the cheapest used games at my local store

Somehow I like to think these two guys knew our love and how bottled it was. I'm so happy ;_;

Moonlight Sonata in the lobby room, please bring that back again!

So, why is everyone assuming this is a remake? The only person in the trailer that came from the first game is the girl. This could very well be an entirely new game, easily set before the events of the first one knowing how the world was made at the end of the first.

That's true but at the E3 conference itself the trailer was announced under the context of 'we like reviving old games, like Killer Instinct'. My guess is that the story is going to be retold (it's a great one anyway).

I agree too, though, a Protagonist vs. Freya sequel could also be a great story.

In case anyone wants to watch some gameplay from the first game -- there's a "card deck" you set up outside of the actual battle, then you go in and HAM it up.
