I've started so many that I'd like to devote time to and finish, and the reason I don't is because is partially because they feel so outdated.  Just recently, Baldur's Gate, Fallout, Jade Empire, Silent Hill 2, Final Fantasy III (VI), Indigo Prophecy, and Deus Ex. I can't play any of them for very long without getting stuck, bored, mad, or annoyed by the clunky controls
for old RPGs you should do what I do just turn the combat to easy and enjoy the story and the world. I did that with planescape torment and BG2 recently (the old combat isn't nearly as good as I remembered)

have to content with my year-old laptop for now since my desktop broke down (it's not too bad since most of the games today are not that taxing however not having a real keyboard sucks). Hopefully I can save up enough money for a beast by winter time.

I think Mass Effect is fine. I just wish there are more skills to customize and more armor, weapons for both me and my party member.

Yes, a lot of games today are built for the console crowd first and then ported to PC so using a controller for those games is way better. Also I enjoy playing racing games, fighting games, action games(DMC, dead space) etc. with a controller. Of course mouse and keyboard is my favourite for FPS, RTS, adventure and CRPG. There's no reason you can't enjoy the best of both world on PC.

@Laketown: get the penny arcade game, it's fucking great. I played it non stop last night for 4 hrs and not done with ep 1 yet, that's crazy value for a $1 game, and the plot is funny too.

@AlisterCat: NWN is the farthest from DS3 as you get. It's more a traditrional D&D rule set RPG, think BG2, NWN1, DA:O (although DA is not D&D but you get the idea). I played about 10 hrs of it before I lost my disc (hence the purchase today) and it was pretty good from what I remembered.
