All Keighley’s Princeps

by infantpipoc

Games of them years awarded by VGA, VGX and TGA all in one place

Princeps, meaning “first among equals”, should have been used to describe the very concept of “Game of the Year”. After all, outlets like Giantbomb and Polygon prefer to put out ranked lists of games with the number one being their game of that year. All listed are good for one reason or another and it's someone sticking their guns that put so and so on the top spot. This is a reasonable approach while Keighley’s, no matter what name that goes by, prefer the “There can only be one!” bullshit.

2024 can be seen as a threshold for the Keighley’s. By then, there had been more Game Awards than Spike Video Game Awards, if VGX 2013 is excluded. The show still must go on until it cannot. With Feng Ji, the producer of Black Myth Wukong, being quite a sour loser to Astro Bot this year. ("Wo te me bai lai le"/"I came all the way for f*** all"? Wang ba gao zi/Motherfucker, the game got Best Action and People‘s Choice! You call those "fuck all"? All because you personally did not get to the stage to give that speech you had prepared at the tail end of that Pandemic, you petty piece of shit? Why would they kiss your newly minted ring when a kiss on Sony’s ring is long-overdue, Feng Xian sheng/Mr. Feng? Ni ta ma xiang guo ma/Ever fucking considered that?) Your truly do feel compelled to see how all 22 plus one firsts among their respective equals look like next to each other. Would love to update this yearly as well. The so-called homo-erotic tension between one G Keighley and one H Kojima would seem like the former is just making up for something when browsing this list is finished.

Madden NFL 2004

1. Madden NFL 2004

Spike Video Game Awards Game of the Year 2003 One needs to have a reputation to lose reputation. Keighley’s does not have a reputation to begin. Not to talk ill of an old sports sim I’ve not played, its winning at the very first Spike VGA is apparently a joke some still share until these days. With Tony Hawk Underground, a rather arcade style action game, winning Best Sports Game instead of this relatively more sim-like sports sim, the award did not look more serious than a monkey going “You got a trophy, and you got a trophy, and…” so on and so forth. It does not now, and I doubt it ever will.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

2. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Spike Video Game Awards Game of the Year 2004 The first time a Grand Theft Auto nominated for Keighley’s and it won. Wouldn’t be the series’ last. I does have much to say since I didn’t really get into any GTA until the over-the-shoulder orthodoxy took over. Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater came out on PS2 this year. The first time “A Hideo Kojima Game” shared this planet with Keighley’s, and it did not win. Up to 2024, so-called Hideo Kojima games still haven't, not at the Keighley's. The game is my favorite of this series but it’s also the most acquired taste. Guess in a world when Halo 2 and Half-Life 2 got more of awe-inspiring first impression, and Keighley’s just got hooked on that GTA train, it just couldn’t win.

Resident Evil 4

3. Resident Evil 4

Spike Video Game Awards Game of the Year 2005 Now this is a stone-cold classic. Being one important step towards over-the-shoulder orthodoxy, it does have rough edges though. Cannot move while aiming a gun is just one of those. The tank control reside of cannot move while turning is actually the bigger one. Cannot move with the knife out is like piss taking. Over-the-shoulder camera is not exactly the best when it comes to judging distance. As the player characters run up to downed enemies and pull their knives to cut, only to find out that enemies are out of reach. Then players have to put the knife, gingerly step forward then bring the knife out to cut. Precious seconds will be lost in the process. The sequels would provide textual button prompt for stamp enemies, but it would have been needed if they had figured out how to let player characters with their weapons out (Guess I am saying that 2019’s Resident Evil 2 remake is the best one among what I’ve played.). Why did you insist on Gamecube exclusivity, Shinji Mikami? Why?

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

4. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Spike Video Game Awards Game of the Year 2006 The first time an Elder Scroll nominated for Keighley’s and it won. Wouldn’t be this series’ last either. Did not play Oblivion, being a high schooler in PRC did not permit one much time for video games, let alone a long-winded one. The year is interesting for introducing Studio of the Year, and Epic won that one for Gears of War. The step towards over-the-shoulder orthodoxy just would not stop.

BioShock

5. BioShock

Spike Video Game Awards Game of the Year 2007 The so-called first immersive sim on consoles. It sure is another stone-cold classic with rough edges. Then since my last playthrough was in January, 2013, I do not remember anything in particular.

Grand Theft Auto IV

6. Grand Theft Auto IV

Spike Video Game Awards Game of the Year 2008 The second time a Grand Theft Auto nominated for Keighley’s and it won. Wouldn’t be the series’ last. This one is of course considered the duller one among the series. The only laugh adjunct to it I had was seeing the opening of that second expansion. Only because it features that dumbass tried to stop Nico’s crew of heavily armed robbers with a bloody pistol. And it was the second time Hideo “Keighley’s boyfriend” Kojima got snubbed by another Grand Theft Auto at the Keighley’s. Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of Patriot was a summer blockbuster and opened the floodgate for “final chapter” bullshit in the video game industry. And I guess people started to realize the game for higher Metacritic scores with those 2 Fourths. No, I don’t mean buying off reviewers, like that poor bunch would ever receive any big fat paychecks for rushing through and writing about video games. The game would be selection: game publishers select media outlets that would be more er, agreeable, then those outlets select reviewers who are more favorable towards those games. It’s a game Sony Interactive Entertainment still think it can play until these days given those motherfuckers' obsession of being "Prestige".

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

7. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Spike Video Game Awards Game of the Year 2009 Intergalactic: Heretic Prophet is undergoing a shitstorm that excludes true Naughty Dog naysaying like what yours truly have to express. The studio’s output is just never that good, not system selling good (Then again, what is?). Playing Uncharted 2 in late 2020 made me go “What the actual fuck were you all on back in 2009?” The action is not improved at all from the 2007 original. The every bit of the train moves technological wonder is wasted, because players have to focus on other shit during that level! Worst of all, that Zionist Neil Drukmann started his ascent with this one…Oh well, I guess there is always a line between rough edges and “holds up like milk”, heh?

Red Dead Redemption

8. Red Dead Redemption

Spike Video Game Awards Game of the Year 2010 The “Rockstar never misses” myth started right here! Well, the only playthrough I had was finished in June, 2010. So, absolutely nothing to add here. Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker also came to PSP in 2010, it’s branded “A Hideo Kojima Game”. But with PSP practically dead in English speaking regions, the game did not stand a chance. And even if it managed to pass that threshold, Keighley’s does not acknowledge any portable but those made by Nintendo. You are showing your age with all that leeway given to Nintendo, Keighley!

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

9. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Spike Video Game Awards Game of the Year 2011 The second time an Elder Scroll nominated for Keighley’s and it won. No new Elder Scroll for the new Keighley’s yet, ain’t that a bummer? Not for me though. I went through a lot of quest lines in this game between November, 2011 and February, 2012, the save file on Xbox 360 said 80 hours. Then that save file was ruined and I never looked back.

The Walking Dead

10. The Walking Dead

Spike Video Game Awards Game of the Year 2012 Ah, the game Micheal Patcher ate a hat on camera for. Oh wait, that was a hat-shaped cookie his wife baked for him. Lucky him. I would keep ask the question “Why is zombie fiction bullshit so popular?” until I got an answer I consider good enough. I got into episode 2 and just gave up.
