My opinion? There are always exceptions, but in general, I think games should set their game wherever they want - lore, history, while important, should never limit and should take a backseat to what could otherwise be an amazing 'virtual vacation' for a player.

Just because it "makes sense" a player should be in a dimly lit, dingy, broken-down brown warehouse, doesn't mean that's where they should be. For some games that really hinge on a sense of realism, I get that. But for many games, this is not the case and can be explained away with the faintest of dialogue/exposition somewhere.

There are a great many people that do not care what makes sense or doesn't, as it relates to setting. If it's explained away enough and internally consistent with itself, I think you can get away with more than one might on-the-head believe.

It's kinda amazing how Jeff had the foresight to see that this was the way "games journalism" was heading way back in 2008.

Agreed. A potent combination of foresight, finding a niche given their limited resources, but probably also just doing what they liked.

At the time, I believe Jeff's blog was fairly basic, him doing more or less what he would've been doing otherwise had he been given more rope.

The old GameSpot crew (including those like Ryan McDonald, Greg Kasavin, etc) were ones I had followed before. The transition to Giant Bomb has sealed me in over time. This relationship was not one built overnight. I will continue being a paying customer until I cannot. If there are opportunities to part with more of my money, not even necessarily for any sort of return, but just to support these guys (I don't need a t-shirt), I will take them.

I don't know Greg Miller and crew. I've seen him 'around'. I used to be an IGN Insider (paid subscription) back in the day (thus my username) so I have spent many a year rummaging around IGN and their boards (hi Vestibule).

I did not find their video particularly appealing and perhaps it draws in a slightly different crowd (a tad younger?). I also would not put it past myself to have said similar things if things were different, and it was Giant Bomb's Patreon, and these guys had done it first in 2008.

Like many others have said here, more Random PC Game, with preference for Phantasmagoria 2. :)

So maybe I'm blaming the wrong thing, but sometimes I get the feeling a fair chunk of people are using things like the CronusMax.

Things of that ilk basically allow people to use keyboard & mouse to play console games, Destiny included. So just puttin' it out there, if you feel certain people are just getting a bead on you a *little* too quickly, things like this do exist and there are no current easy ways of detecting them.

That makes no sense. A keyboard and mouse wouldn't help you at all in a console shooter. The controls are designed for a controller, so even if you were somehow using a mouse the game is still built to handle with a controller. With the way aim assist works, the way turning works, and just the way the game handles playing with a mouse would actually feel off if you're used to playing on a PC.

Also, give me a break. If anyone is using something like this it's probably less than 1% of players, not a valid excuse for anything.

Okay. I will give you a break. I will give you your <1% stat.

That said, links like this (http://controllermax.com/precision-mouse-keyboard-control/) describe how these devices compensate for the certain kinds of way aim assist/handling work (on a per-game basis) to ensure you don't feel too 'off' when using a mouse.

Just making the point these things do exist and do account for what you had mentioned (how well they account for it, I couldn't speak to - but they do address it). Your 1% stat might still be accurate. And you're probably right that I was too quick to blame. However, I wanted to let the OP know of things like this. I hope that's a fair remark.

@insidergamer: I think its part of their anime influence.

In particular, the evangelion influence that turned throwing random judeocristian symbolism in mildly relevant places and passing it as depth.

And yes, Kojima is known for doing that from time to time...

Glad we're agreed on this. :)

@insidergamer: Judging characters solely by their name doesn't really work. People call Katniss Everdeen a strong character. It doesn't make her name sound any less like the protagonist of a Gundam show.

Oh no, for sure - you, of course, have a great point. I'm not hiding the fact I'm being willfully negative to a fault. Maybe just frustrated with all this is all.

I am observant of the whole 'don't judge a book by its cover' thing. But gosh, what a cover.

Low. My expectations are low. The concept art looks completely generic, to the extent that I can't really distinguish between the characters - they all wear black and all have stupid anime-style haircuts. I don't doubt their backstories also include a lot of misunderstood angst and brooding in dark corners.

What amazes me is how little Squeenix seems to understand the audience for Final Fantasy. Somehow, they got the idea in their heads that Western audiences would never play a turn based game, and that all we want is really good graphics and lots and lots of particle effects, when really all we want is the same thing we've always wanted - a good game. Prior Final Fantasies (I'm talking PS1 and back) sold well because they were good games, recent ones have not sold as well because they were garbage.

I mean they seem shocked, shocked that FFXIII was received poorly. Well, what did they expect? That game deviated so far from the Final Fantasy ideal that it is a wonder is carried the name at all. At the same time, Bravely Default sold really well despite being everything that Squeenix thinks the Western gamer loathes - a turn based game with chunky graphics.

Of course, being Squeenix, it doesn't appear they've learned their lesson. FFXV is supposedly an action-RPG, because hey, Diablo is popular over here, right?

Hey, I could not agree more. Simply couldn't.

Think you're on the right track - it's as if Square does not understand what made their games such a success, so they wrongly iterate on things they think had contributed it to it, ignoring the things that actually had.

Basically, Square, like you've done in past, please make a beautiful world I WANT to be in, with characters I can sort-of care for, replete with super-grand music, and just enough excuses for player agency (battles, equipment/items, some decision making) such that the whole thing isn't just a movie anyway.

(I long for a Final Fantasy with even the ILLUSION of an open world again. So, in that vein, more FF12 please and less FF13.)

Also, thanks for the info in this thread. These names below, ARE embarrassing.

  • Noctis Lucis Caelum
  • Gladiolus Amicitia
  • Ignis Stupeo Scientia
  • Prompto Argentum
  • Cor Leonis
  • Stella Nox Fleuret
  • Regis Lucis Caelum

EDIT: Is it wrong for me to say these names almost sound fetishistic in the way Square is just lapping up these pseudo-Latin-European references? Also, don't get me started on the nonsensical tripe that is some of the captions to their trailers for this game.

It's almost Kojima-esque in the way they seem to use ancient, once-upon-a-time lingo to evoke a sense of complexity (perhaps, if I dare say, where there might be none).

If I'm a hater, so be it, but I'm just crestfallen my opinion of the company has fallen so rapidly in what feels like such a short period of time.

@koolaid: Thanks for the tips, koolaid, much appreciated.

Also, for the record, I think you're more than on the level. If it were me, I'd say what you're saying now, though maybe not as eloquently as you.
