I've been replaying Prey recently, and I've really come to appreciate how strict the stealth in that game is. When you're ten feet up courching on a pipe, everyone will see you. Everyone. It felt frustrating back when I first played the game, but it has really forced my current playthrough to consider fully the positioning and visibility of my character. When I think about it in terms of actual field of vision, that's well within what the average person would see quite clearly. Standing on a pipe and hoping not to get noticed is like a child standing behind curtains with their little toesies sticking out into the room.

Anyway, I bring that up because watching the character in the game walk across a hanging rope that's maybe 8 feet off the ground and go unnoticed is so goofy.

Hot take: Prey is one of the 10 best games of 2017. Excellent game.

Those thinking this game may be a bit overhyped aren't really wrong, but they're also missing context a bit. Remember this came out between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith when original Star Wars fans were pretty damn annoyed with the direction of the franchise. Lots of people latched on to Kotor as the best thing to happen in Star Wars fiction since the original trilogy.

Certainly a debatable opinion if you were into the extended universe at the time, but I'd agree that it's better than anything George Lucas was doing.

This bit about context is pretty key. It's easy to forget (and maybe it wasn't the same everywhere) but for a long time Star Wars was a deeply uncool thing to be into due in large part to the prequels being god awful. This whole Marvel era has normalised liking nerdy shit quite a lot but in the early 2000s back then to get a big videogame following on from content based on the Dark Horse comics with covers like this using a D&D style ruleset? It was really exciting for the tragics.

As an aside and to illustrate there has always been good Star Wars and shitty Star Wars co-existing I just realised Jedi Outcast came out the same year as Attack of the Clones.

The other thing to remember is, this is BioWare pre-Mass Effect. So, it lays serious groundwork for what many now consider to be the prototypical BioWare party RPG.

FWIW, I loved this game when it came out...I have owned it on every platform it has ever appeared on (including Amazon Fire TV), and I replay it at least once per year...so my opinion on this game is absolutely biased.

Ben, I would be honored if the Iron Octopus became your Rogue. You have my sword.

After the first unfinished, and subsequent playdate, with this game, I immediately went and got it. I am not an early access guy, but something about this game really got me. This game got me to get an Epic account and install the launcher. I am about 80 hours in on my first factory...still loving it. Major patch 3 comes out tomorrow, I believe. Love that Vinny is coming back to this. Hopefully, he will come back again in the future when its officially out, whenever that will be!

That was painful to watch...both gameplay wise and the overall sports knowledge being spouted. Bummer on both accounts.

Looking into this a little deeper, it seems Microsoft has been the place to play ALL Mass Effect games so far...looking at the combined scores for Sony and Microsoft, Xbox 360 and Xbox 1 hold the highest ratings out of the 3 scores they keep, for all 4 games. I played the original trilogy on 360 exclusively, so it seems in the pantheon of gaming, I lucked out.

In hopeful news, around the video game sphere, there seems to be "general positivity," as Steam might call it, for Andromeda...aggregating a 76/100 for Xbox 1 and PC. Taking into consideration first game on current hardware, new tech, new dev team, new writers, new characters, new galaxy, not a ton of money (considering what franchise and developers we are talking about), maybe too much hype, and the internet as it is today...not the worst launch or game I have ever seen.

Is the game somewhat disappointing in a few regards, sure. But, its not the complete dumpster fire some people would love to have you think, for whatever reason. If I wasn't such a fan of the original trilogy, I would not have pre-ordered the game, as I do not pre-order games anymore (this is the first game I have pre-ordered since Fallout: New Vegas...I didn't even pre-order Mass Effect 3)...and if you haven't bought it yet, maybe wait until its $30 or less. By then, a few patches and maybe a DLC or two will be released, and the game will feel a little more complete. Hell, some outlets already have it at $47 USD, only furthering the unnecessary negative buzz, IMHO.

There's definitely fun to be had though, especially if you do not take it too seriously and sometimes make your own fun. A game with some silliness and technical issues seems like a dream for Vinny, as he has taught us all to love games by trying to break them. We would do well to remember his teachings now.

It seems PS4 is NOT the place to play Andromeda. Playing on XB1, and I've seen NONE of the game breaking stuff people are hammering the game for...which understandably makes me more quick to jump to it's defense. It seems like the PC and Xbox builds are just more stable overall, and thus those of us playing those versions are having a better experience overall. I've been giving it a 3.5/5 so far. About 15 hours in.

I left the helmets on, so I have very little issue with the bad facial animations. It's hard to get people to swoon over new characters, when many people are still either in love with the old ones or enraged by how the original ending, and even the "extended cut" stuff panned out in 3. Walking into ME1, you had no reason to give a shit about any of the characters, much like the start to any new IP or story...I would expect by the end of Andromeda's life cycle, most of the bugs and animation stuff will be fixed, maybe some more depth writing added within the DLC, and people who stick it out, or at least come back for the updates and DLC, will be ready for a second installment in a few years time.

Remember the jump of quality of game from ME1 to ME2? Let's just hope any further games will follow that path.
