It's an issue of subtlety, not an issue of conveying important gameplay information. One could make the argument that the game still thinks you're stupid in any case, it's just making you feel smart when it's not explicit. Kind of like how Portal 2 is so heavily focus tested that everything just kind of "clicks" and makes sense, but it's also designed so that just about anyone will know exactly what to do at all times. It gives you the feeling that you "figured it out" when it's quietly hitting you over the head with the information.
Good luck explaining to someone how to play a complex strategy game or the mechanics of an RPG without explicit tutorials though.
Not only do I love Double Fine as a developer, but this project is just one of the most interesting things I've seen in the industry. A chance to see a game being made, for a community of people to give active feedback during development and an unprecedented level of transparency? Yes please.
@louiedog: I fondly recall the days of demo disc. Back in the day my sister used to play the crap out of all of them. We sure as hell played some of those more than 30 times.
Been looking forward to playing this, but didn't want to emulate/import it.
Going to preorder as soon as available, and I hope Last Story and Pandora's tower also make their way over here. (Will likely depend on how well Xenoblade sells over here)
@damswedon: Knowing Bioware, Shepard will probably interface with the leader reaper and become a reaper himself/herself and then order all the other reapers to leave earth alone.
