whereas Capcom seemed to be more interested in cashing in with a Special Edition of 4, a game that was thin to begin with.
SE for 4 was significantly more content than Definitive Edition was for DmC. The other thing is DMC4 didn't have fundamentally poor design to fix outside of its relatively mundane level design, that's a huge undertaking to address in a special edition. DmC was filled with tons of silly design decisions that were just flat out counter intuitive to its core mechanics. As you state you're not there for the combat I can see how you'd see SE for 4 as a cash in but as a fan of DMC4 and 3 it was a fantastic package.
Also lets not forget DmC Definitive was a full repurchase where 4SE was $20 at most.
