2012 Top 5 Video Games

This would be a Top 10, however, I didn't get a chance to play many games this year nor much of the ones I did play. Also, not many interesting games came out this year anyways, some were just disappointments.

I'd also like to add that I would put Persona 4 Golden on this list, preferably in the 1 or 2 spot, but it would be unfair considering it's just a super port of a game that came out a few years ago.

Now, here is the Top 5 games I played this year, starting with the number 1 game.

List items

  • I tend to be terrible at fighting games. I try my best to do combos and special moves without button mashing due to my hate for mashing. This game changed that. It's Roshambo style fighting system made the fighting a little more manageable. It's also one of the rare occasions where a game with gorgeous graphics also controlling well and having a decent (confusing) story.

  • This was a nice surprise. I never really had a chance to play the original Double Dragon, but I had an idea of what it was like thanks to other various side-scrolling beat-em-ups I used to play. WayForward took an old gaming style and revamped it with light RPG elements. The love of the 80's is shown with tons and tons of Neon everywhere, the corny bad guys, and of course Skullmageddon himself. Definitely a good time for cheap. Oh, and don't forget the most important thing. Couch multiplayer!!

  • This game is another example of a manageable fighting system. Not only can it play like other complicated fighters, you are able to dumb it down to your level. There is also an inclusion of repeatedly pressing one button for a massive combo, which can be cheap, but a more experienced player can easily break out of it. The story mode is also nice, especially if you care about the Persona universe and want to know what is happening to your favorite characters.

  • This game is art, and I say that rarely. Last time I described a game like that is with Okami and Shadow of the Colossus. Some may hate Quick-Time Events, I'm one of those people, but I gave this game a try anyways. I absolutely love it. The fact that this game is literally an interactive anime makes the Quick-Time Events make sense.

  • I love Kart racing games. I used to only like the Mario Kart series. Then, this game came along. Sega took Nintendos idea of water and air travel and flipped it over on it's side. Your Kart fully transforms to fit the terrain, as well as letting you use terrain short cuts at times. There are also a ton of extra modes compared to the tiny amount included in even the most recent Mario Kart. The sense of speed on higher difficulties is insane and awesome to look at. When I rented this game, I could not stop playing, I didn't even want to take it back to the store. I hope Nintendo catches on and that Sega still continues to make this game even more epic.
