GOTY 2013

So here's all the games released in 2013 I have played.

List items

  • It may have not been the most original experience, but for me it was the most fun I've had this year. With over 70 hours sank into the single player experience I got my money's worth out of it. Sure the multiplayer was a bit of a let down but I'm not much for online gaming.

  • I've never been into Tomb Raider. I've played the odd release here and there, but this refreshed reboot of the franchise hooked me. In my opinion a superior adventure game to the last installment of Uncharted.

  • Visually I loved this game. It was bright colourful and vibrant. The story I think isn't all that enjoyable once you know the details of how everything works and the combat had high points and lows. Still A solid return to form for the series.

  • Despite being catergorised as an expansion pack, Blood Dragon could have supported an entire game of it's own. This game hit's me right in the nostalgia and it was fun to pick up on many references to 80s and 90s sci-fi action.

  • Deadpool was nothing special, but it was a solid combat game. I would have liked to place it higher but I realise a huge amount of it's appeal was from being a fan of the character. Beside with so many dark and depressing games these days sometimes you got to make a little room for fun and laughter.

  • To be honest if someone had told me last year that a game based on totalitarian bureaucracy would have been one of the most gaming experiences of 2013 I would have dismissed you. Yet the idea is inspired and complex game which has a story that can branch out in many different directions depending on how you play the system and how well you do so.

  • As a late comer to this game I feel I've missed being caught up in the hype. While I'll admit this is a very solid game with an engrossing story, it just doesn't hook me like I thought it would. Still a better horror based game than most AAA attempts these days.

  • The original Luigi's Mansion on Gamecube was a favourite of mine and this game got me to buy a 3DS. Pretty much the same concept but with slight tweaks. Maybe lacks a bit of the original's charm.

  • Sometimes a good game comes from tried and tested material and God of War is proof of this. It's not revolutionary and isn't as epic as previous GOW games but sometimes familiarity is welcomed.

  • Had this game not come out half finished when I played it, the placing could have been a few numbers higher. As it stands the Arkham experience is still a lot of fun but this game was too flawed for me to allow it to scrape into the Top 10.

  • Honorable mention #1: 3DS Version. The first game with my 3DS (packaged) and really got me feeling like I was playing the old SNES games. Graphically its pretty good and stylistic. Some parts of the game are a little frustrating due to the precision required but what else should be expected from Donkey Kong Country. Due to it not really being a 2013 game I'm excluding it from the Top 10 but still a really nice game to play on the go.

  • Honorable mention #2: Telltale's first story driven offering since the end of The Walking Dead Season 1 was yet another comic book adaption. Although I've never read it the first episode gave the feeling that my choices had major consequences and has left me thirsting for more. Until the product is complete though it won't break the Top 10.

  • Honorable mention #3: So after the excellent Season 1, the first episode didn't blow me away but was still pretty solid. Much like The Wolf Among Us I look forward to how it develops.

  • Neutral Mention #1: I love and hate David Cage games at the same time. I really do see what he is going for in his games but he is just so bad at putting them together. This time he got some serious acting talent behind this title but the story is so dis-jointed that I couldn't enjoy it. Maybe fourth time's the charm?

  • Neutral mention #2: Since I never played the original game I knew I wouldn't get nostalgic over this remake of the 80s platformer. So unfortunately I saw nothing special in this. It was nice to hear some of the original cast though.

  • Dishonorable mention #1: But when I am nostalgic for something it has to be done reasonably well otherwise I will never forgive. I loved the original 1992 Amiga version of Flashback but this remake did it no justice. It kept all the things that were outdated from the original while disposing of the things that made it unique.

  • Dishonorable mention #2: At least Flashback wasn't a frustrating mess to navigate. A side scrolling metroidvania game with a top down map made navigation a nightmare. With buttons that were unresponsive, trial and error stealth gameplay, the Arkham series has lived long enough to see itself become the villain.

  • Dishonorable mention #3: At first I thought I really loved The Cave. It was funny at points, played ok enough to be considered good and had its own style. Then I replayed it and considering the length of the game and how little each character impacts a playthough it just became tedious.

  • Mention mention: Yeah, this game is here just because I played it breifly but couldn't get into it.
