As I sit here I find my self at a all to familiar cross roads. Do I want to play Final Fantasy XIII? As a person who has never even finished a single FF game, I have no clue why this question always pops up? Is it because it’s a big new release? No if that was the case I have the same desire to play something like Madden every year but dont. Maybe I think this is it! This will finally click. Maybe this time I’ll understand why everyone is so damn crazy over Final Fantasy. Maybe this one will turn me into a crazed fan? It’s not like I don’t enjoy RPG’s or even JRPG’s for that matter. I got wildly addicted to Persona 3 last year and enjoyed the hell out of that game. So what is it that drives me away and at the same time towards the FF franchise? I have started 7, 8 and 10, and all of them I have quit at about the 20 hour mark, and looking back I cant even begin to tell you why I quit. Did I loose interest? No clue. I guess I need to really ask the question am I doomed to repeat the same things? Will I ever finish a Final Fantasy game?! Will john and Kate ever get back together?!!!.... whoops wrong topic. Why internet? Why do I always engage in this pointless cycle? Why do I always have such a strong urge to play a new Final Fantasy and always end up quitting at the same mark? Unforchantly I don’t think any one will have the answer. Im gonna go drink coffee and smoke way too many cigarettes and contemplate this issue.

To be honest.... if other FF games didn't click with you, I doubt FFXIII will.
 
Story is subpar, the battle system is kind of interesting, but unlike Persona games it lacks the depth. Combat is just repetitive and strategy is shallow since one strategy tends to work against most enemies. 
 
Although, like most post 7 Final Fantasy, it will give you the rush of  "Wow, pretty graphics..."

I completely agree with you.  I really want to play Final Fanstasy XIII even though I never seem to finish any of the previous Final Fantasies.  I always enjoy the time I spend with them, but I always hit a point where I lose interest and move on to something else.  I will probably end up getting FFXIII, but when the price drops.

Without knowing why you lost interest in the previous games you played, I can't really gauge if XIII is the game for you or not.
 
Final Fantasy XIII has a fast-paced battle system with a lot of depth, a good amount of customization options, and is fairly linear for the first 20 hours or so of the game. I think the story and characters are both very good, but opinions differ when it comes to those elements. If that sounds appealing to you, then go for it.

Nope.  It's Final Fantasy.  There are some changes as there have been with every game in the series since the original PlayStation days, but fundamentally it earns the logo of the franchise from which it has been birthed.  If you couldn't get into the others, you won't get into this one.

Nope. It's not Final Fantasy. It is so far removed from what made the series popular, it's not even funny anymore. "Fans" get a kick out of some concepts and names that, again, appear in different shapes, but if this game were released in 1995, people would have laughed at it for its complete lack of actual gameplay. 
 
FPS and TPS games are very popular, even though in most of these games, all you do is run, kill stuff and watch the "story" in cutscenes. This is what Final Fantasy XIII is. It works for many people, and it can be a fun game at times - but whether or not you like it has nothing to do with whether or not you liked previous Final Fantasies.
