Excuse Me, But You Got Your WoW in My Command And Conquer.

I'm late on my blog this week, mainly because it's been a hectic timeframe to try and actually get some form of exposition written.  Nonetheless, it's finally here, even if it's on a Sunday.

So what's the big news for me this week?  Well, that would be the Command & Conquer 4 closed beta.  Our gaming center was lucky enough to get a chance to get into the multiplayer beta for the game.  I've been a longtime fan of the C&C series, and despite what anyone wants to say about Westwood and EA and this and that, I thoroughly enjoyed C&C 3.  I never did get to play Kane's Wrath or Red Alert 3, although I've heard plenty of good things about both as well.  Command and Conquer 4, however, is a different beast altogether...and so far, "different" does NOT translate into "good".

Welcome to Command & Conqu...errr, wait...wrong game...right?

Essentially, EA is looking over at Relic right now and saying "hey, maybe we should try to make that game"...and failing miserably.  While I understand that this is a BETA...this is also a game that is shipping in TWO MONTHS...and it is incredibly poor in quality and ideas.  To start, the beta has no real tutorial to tell you how to play everything - merely a thread on the beta forums explaining the bare minimums.  Everything else seems to be "learn as you go", which means that if you have no clue what the fuck you are doing, then you are playing against a bunch of people online that could easily stomp your asshole into the ground and you'll never know what the fuck is going on.  After a little bit of time, I finally figured out how the basics actually worked in-game.

You'll start off by picking one of three different mobile bases called "crawlers": offense, defense, and support.  Each has its own units that it will call it, adding further to the "paper/rock/scissors" mentality of the gameplay that has become familiar.  You can only deploy these crawlers in a specific zone, but you will then build all the units inside of this crawler.  Whether your base is moving or staying stationary, you'll be able to build the units regardless.  However, to deploy them onto the battlefield, you'll have to "unpack" the crawler.  Already, this is TOO much work just to get units onto the field in comparison to the old base-building style.  It gets worse, however, when you realize that you are limited to only three or four units per class to build UNTIL YOU HAVE LEVELED UP MORE!

That's right, folks - the "profile progression" and "leveling up" that we've been hearing about will actually unlock extra support skills, upgrades, and even unit types for you to use.  Therefore, pray to God that you are constantly playing the game, or you'll find yourself on the other end of a massive beatdown where your opponent has to put forth very little effort to destroy you.  This ALONE breaks the shit out of the game and frustrates me beyond belief.  Granted, I'm only at level 4 right now in the beta, but I have already seen how a team of level 8's can rape level 4's.  Do we really need more MMO in our RTS games?

Welcome to Command & Conqu...errr, wait...still the wrong game...

To top that off, the maps are incredibly basic and poorly designed for any type of defensive or offensive maneuvers.  Maybe I've just played too much Dawn of War II, Company of Heroes, World in Conflict, and and Command and Conquer 3.  Hell, maybe it's due to the fact that the only four maps I've seen in the beta seem to be specifically designed with 5v5 play in mind!  The maps just feel bad all around.

As for the game type, they are showing off Domination mode...which is basically the main mode found in Relic's RTS games.  Capture these points, hold them, and rack up ticket count to win.  In the C&C universe...I don't know, it's just a poor way to go about playing.  =  /

I'm going to be getting more time in with the game, and hopefully the game will get better at some point.

In other gaming-related stuff, I beat Darksiders on Apocalyptic.  Man, that game was goddamn excellent!  I've still got a handful of achievements to pull, which is mainly going to be grinding away as well as exploring my ass off.  I'm up for it, but at the same time...that lack of combat in the world is something that's going to drive me bonkers.

I also S ranked 1 vs 100 last week, which means I'll probably never touch that game again.  It's fun stuff, but I know I'll never be in the top 3 of the crowd...or the 1...or in the mob...because there's a bunch of bullshit cheaters on that game.

With that said, I think I need to get some points for Mad Moxxi's, the upcoming AC2 DLC, and much much more.

Until next time...piece.
